Late Late Night with your host, Brady Hoke...

Submitted by jhackney on

Brady Hoke. Our new coach. Regardless of what you think, he is here.

Our first guest, OC Al Borges

Any confirmation on his OC Borges?

First reaction to his history is that he has won at most places he went. 13-0 at Auburn probably most notable.

Let the healing begin...

let's see here...

1) love everything he had to say about offensive philosophy.

2) love that he has a lot of great recruiting connections, especially back in CA.

3) love that it sounds like these guys are going to use our weapons to the best of their abilities - i.e. - denard.

4) love the 'speed and toughness' recruiting concept, which at least in part coincides with rich rod's.

I love the fact that we will once again have substantial California recruiting connections. The decline in California recruiting seemed to coincide with the decline of our program.

I was surprised to see Hoke as at least boasted of having a good recruiting base as well. Looks like we may have a new pool to sip from? Any current or potential recruits in California right now?

Also, will Hoke use snake oil, or does he have something else?

At first glance it seems that offenses under Al Borges have improved everywhere he's gone. He's been an OC at Boise St., Oregon, Cal, Auburn, UCLA...those are some pretty solid names. Sounds like an excellent addition.

So what does he run?  Only info I found said west coast.  How does that at all fit with our current QB's and linemen?  Is it safe to say that Brandon disregarded nearly every criteria he mentioned in the press conference last Weds?

Brady Hoke may or may not be our first choice as coach, but he's here, so let's support him and hope for the best.

If we undermine this guy before he's given the chance to coach his first game at Michigan, then we've become the Freep.

Let's not become the Freep.

One of the major plusses with Borges is his ability to develop quarterbacks. All the scuttlebutt on Borges is that QB development is his calling card, of sorts. In a post-Denard Michigan (hopefully in three years), I'd like to see us become an NFL quarterback factory yet again. Borges gives recruits the chance to improve substantially in their time in Ann Arbor.

I can't wait to see how he's going to tailor his scheme to our current personnel, though. He seems like a nimble enough offensive mind to find a good middle-ground. After all, didn't Brandon say that scheme flexibility was important in the hiring process?

I'm already anxious for spring ball and the first stirrings about our offensive strategy going forward.

We've got two years of Devin Gardner after Denard leaves. Even if it means resorting to a form of Tressel-ball, I want these guys to use the immense talent we already have at the QB position. They aren't going to recruit more talented players to step in immediately, so that pro-style QB factory can wait four years.

Well I had this long post written out but it fucking got messed up.  I'll just give cliffs instead...

- I fully support Brady Hoke despite the disappointment of a more well-known coach not being hired.  He's our coach, I feel I have to support him.

- Dave Brandon should be fired.  He started way too late, lied to the media about not talking to Miles and saying Hoke was his first option (even if he was, fucking hire him already and don't wait forever), he thought he'd have an easy time hiring Harbaugh or Miles, which makes him incompetent and foolish, he didn't get the hire he said he would (open up the checkbook and unite the fan base), he hired an unproven coach, in the end it was just a disaster.  I don't like him and think he is clueless.  Sure, he owns Domino's, doesn't mean he knows what he's doing as an athletic director.  He fired Rich because the alumni wanted it, not necessarily because of what he might of thought.

- Lots of talk about Hoke being a great guy, not a ton of talk about him being a great recruiter, coach, or football mind.  Somewhat worrisome to me.

- SDSU had, in my opinion, a surprisingly better offense than I would've thought.  Al Borges though, is still not the top coordinator that we need.  Those Auburn years were defensive-minded teams who allowed like 14 points a game against some big names.  They weren't dominate offensive teams, and the last year Borges was there, they were 101st in the country in total offense.  Every year the offensive production steadily decreased while he was there.

- In the end, I'm scared to tell the truth.  Scared because of a clueless athletic director.  Scared of an unproven coach who might be solid, but can he make the national championship runs that we want?  Scared of mediocrity for 3 to 5 more seasons, where Michigan could seemingly seem like just another job, not the leader of college football.  I just hope things go okay, because my insane-addiction to Michigan football as a 19 year old (birthday was today :) ) is kinda ridiculous and unhealthy.  Couldn't bear more downtime and listening to my Ohio State uncles put me down till the point of murder...

Ugh, kinda weren't cliffs.  Don't really expect anybody to read that but o well, I feel better... slightly.

That Dave Brandon's process was a travashamockery, everything I am reading from every source indicates that Hoke is a great recruiter and a great guy. It sounds like when he was here at UM he was the best recruiter on the staff. Let's not forget that Ball State is no better than 11th in the MAC in terms of attractability because of resources and location (probably only Eastern and Buffalo are below them). It is also clear that San Diego State had no clue what was going on before Hoke arrived, they did not even offer Tate and he is from there.

Lastly, anyone who thinks our offense is going to be boring or stone-aged needs to look at SDS offensive stats from this past year. Their QB threw for over 3800 yards and 28 TDs. Their running back ran for over 1500 yards with 17 TDs and they had two recievers with over 1200 yards receiving. They scored 35 ppg which was better than our 32.7 ppg and lost their four games by a combined 15 points (to BYU, Utah, TCU (most points allowed all season), and Missouri.
