Last night's title game drew the lowest TV ratings in ten years

Submitted by M Fanfare on

Last night's game earned a 13.8 rating. The previous record low was a 14.3 for the Nebraska-Miami Rose Bowl in 2002, which also featured a team (Nebraska) that didn't win its own conference.

Ratings for the BCS bowls were down across the board, but I thought it was interesting that this game was down 14% from last year.

Per the Huntsville (Alabama) Times: http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/01/alabama-lsu_produces_lowest_…

This is also only the second year its been on cable.  So ratings are naturally going to be lower than if it was on ABC/FOX.

Although no matter which way you cut it, that was a turd of a game.

Despite the pervasiveness of cable and the deterioration of the networks, there still actually are people who don't get cable, either voluntarily are because of money/location. Cable sports is always lower rated than network, even the NFL.

Makes sense considering the game featured two teams from the same conference and same party of the country.

A lot of the same people from SEC country would have been watching if the same had just featured one of either Bama or LSU. The fact that both were playing creates a lot of overlap in viewers, while the fact that the Pac-10, Big Ten and Big Twelve didn't have a horse in this race resulted in a failure to draw in those fanbases.

Just not a game most people wanted to see a replay of from earlier in the season. The first game between the two wasn't nearly as good as it was hyped and there was no reason to believe that this time would be any different. Every year there are complants about the BCS but I think they really dropped the ball this time. OK. State had every right to be playing last night.

during the second half. First half, I was playing basketball. I'm glad ratings were down. Screw the BCS and screw the SEC. But most of all, screw ESPN and it's stupid agenda.

Then got distracted by my housemates playing a game.

Then went and did some homework due today during the second half.

Honestly, the game barely interested me at all.  I can't recall a major game this year that I have cared for less.

I forgot that game was even on.

Frankly, by January 9, I'd had an overdose of bowl season. There are too many bowls. The season starts too early, and ends too late.

And the bowl names! My god, who can keep them straight? Who even wants to?

How about this: Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Gator Bowl, Citrus Bowl, Alamo Bowl, Cherry Bowl, etc.

Play the good ones on New Years' Day. Play the rest between Christmas and New Years. Eliminate the BcS.

Who really wants to watch two 6-6 teams square off?  That is no better than a cupcake homecoming game or conference contenders squaring off in the regular season.  Gay...

And, every bowl needs to take notes from the Rose Bowl and do away with the sponsor name before the bowl.  Example? Example:

The Fiesta Bowl, presented by Tostitos or the Sugar Bowl presented by AllState.

The powers that be have done absolutely nothing to preserve tradition in FFB over the last decade or so.

I was playing basketball, and then played Fifa 12.  I watched 10 minutes of the game and turned it off, absolutely brutal to watch.  I wasn't planning on watching any of the game, but turned it on out of curiosity.  Ok State got jobbed so I could get the priveledge of watching that.

Chick TV vs. the SEC championship game.  I flipped over once during a commercial to see the score and watch Jefferson miss a pass.  Screw the SEC.  Screw Alabama and the rest of the SEC for their over signing.

...is terrible.

Really who wants to watch a college football game on a Monday night in mid-January?  It's too damn late for a school/work night too.  Why can't they at least do it on a weekend?

The effort to "super bowl-size" the BCS championship game is not a good idea.  Most Super Bowls suck too.

it was a boring and dull game and we now have a national champion that not only did NOT win its own conferencd but didnt win its own division

does suck. The Monday after the NFL playoffs? Everyone is talking about Tebow, last year Lynch's TD run, or a few years ago Romo fumbling a PAT snap....And, 9 days into the new year? This has bugged me for years.

I fell asleep before the 4th quarter. Damn National tv and your 8 P.M East Coast start times. Start the game at 7:05 please. Nobody on the West Coast cares about two SEC Teams anyway.

(which was a halftime thing) was from a play two years ago!!!.  Hilarious.

This bowl game was a disaster but will lead to the demise of the current BCS system.  Be happy.

I was watching Tora Tora Tora, but there were too many commercials, so i played battlefield 3 online during the game, and enjoyed myself a lot more than i would have if i had watched the game

The BCS NC officially jumped the shark when it went with a rematch of two teams, not just in the same conference, but in the same division in the same conference.

If Michigan and Nebraska wind up being phenomenal teams in a few years, I still don't think they should ever play in a rematch in the NC.  And I'm a Michigan/B1G homer.

I hope last night is the tipping point where the whole pile of turds is broomed out for a new playoff system.
