Kev. Grady and Josh Brent

Submitted by jtmc33 on
As of June 2nd, Former UM recruit and current Illinois DT Josh Brent started to serve his 60 day jail sentence for DUI. Zook stated Brent is currently suspended, but he will determine his status after the legal issues are resolved. Grady served a 7 day sentence for probabtion violation related to a DUI. His status is currently in the air, but recent stories suggest he will be on the team come fall. Brent is a Soph. (I think a redshirt freshman) with at least 3years to give the Illini, and Grady is a 5th year senior who is the 4th string TB that doesn't fit the system. Seems to me that RR could easily avoid negative PR and use Grady as an example to the team (without effecting the two-deep) by kicking him off the team. However, maybe family values and the best interest of one of his players is more important than avoiding even more negative publicity. Zook, on the other hand, has a potential 2-3 year starter sitting in jail for 60 days. Will be interesting to see how that plays out... and how both are compared when final decisions on their roster status is made

last year when the original violation took place. The big difference that you forgot to mention is that Grady was of legal age when he got arrested. Not only does Brent get a DUI there is also an MIP involved. The cases currently have no comparison despite what you claim except for the DUI charge. Being suspended during the summer means absolutely nothing.

you don't kick a kid off the football team just because you want to look good for running a tight ship. You kick him off if he deserves it and he already paid his dues. You can't toy with Grady like that

I agree with you. But Houston Nutt obviosly doesn't: facing an oversigned class, he recently cut two players who had exptremely minor infractions off the team (and no surprise, they were both 3rd string guys). What RR could of done (and not saying should have done) happens all the time. It says a lot about RR that he will take whatever negative press to keep Grady on the team. It is even more impressive when the player is a seldom used 5th year.

there are currently conflicting stories regarding how Grady has handled his probation. if the initial stories - that he's done nothing - are accurate, he should be kicked off. and an admitted added benefit of kicking him off is setting an example.

Yes. College Football is for, more than anyone else, the people playing it, and Grady isn't a tool for RR to make a statement with. If Grady earns the trust of the coaches and his teammates, he should stay.

to keep Grady, since it's being said that Grady is working through his legal issues. If he is making progress, there is no reason to kick him off the team. He knows this is the last year of his football career and he will likely give the team 100% wherever he can. Plus, this shows recruits that Rich Rod has his players' backs, even when things go bad, if they take care of their responsibilities.
