...I got laid off. Same situation, though. Young, no kids, etc... It still sucked, cut deep. Good luck to you and trust me, you'll be fine. The world needs smart people (assuming you're smart because you read the world's greatest blog), especially in times such as these.

A b-school classmate of mine was laid off from his job at Accenture last week. Friends of mine were laid off from GE, Continental Tire, and Morgan Stanley. One of my clients just announced that they are cutting everyone's salaries by 47% for the next quarter. Even my own company is rolling out a voluntary unpaid time off program to cut operating expenses (ie, compensation). Best of luck to you...

I've been laid off for almost a year now. I know the frustration, the despair...and the cat and mouse chase of trying to find something that is comparable to what your used to getting.

AB is that you? My industry is going to hell. Last year was a good one, but this year, I will probably see about 50% of the money i did last year. Rough. Especially when you buy a house in September, aka right before the big crash. It's depressing.

Sorry to hear about you losing your job. Its a big blow. A bit of unsolicited advice that may or may not be relevant to your current situation. In my view, the current downturn is going to last another year and half at least - and even after that manufacturing based skills (since you mentioned tool and die) are not going to be much in demand. Perhaps its a great time to explore grad school with a professional degree that will continue to have traction in the market (choices abound - just in Michigan you have = Michigan Business School, Law School, School of Information, School of Education, Public Health, Public Policy - you might be a great fit for the Business School's Manufacturing focused MBA track or the Master in Supply Chain program). By the time you will graduate - you will have a better job market to take your pick from. Wishing you all the best. Hope things turn around for you quickly job wise.

I was just laid off last month as well. Unfortunately... I bought a house last year and I have a wedding coming up in a few months. It's gonna be a bitch getting approved for a loan to help pay for the wedding. Hopefully, only a few people on this board are going through job cuts right now.

Ouch -- weddings are expensive. I hope you can make it through without taking on much debt. I'm not going through a job cut, but I am trying to build a small photography business, and in this sort of economy it can be hard selling what's really often just a luxury. People still like photos, but they're not so inclined to put as much money in that direction. It's an adventure.

I don't know about the possiblities of this but research other countries markets for tool and dye jobs. If their is a need i suggest to go to those markets until the one here goes up a little bit and then come back because not only will yo ustill be working but it will look good on your resume remember some other countries have not been hit as hard and there still might be oppertunities elsewhere but make sure you research before you go though the las tthing you want to do is leave and find out there is no jobs.

I'm with you guys. Laid off about a month ago. I'm married but thankfully have no kids right now. The wife will graduate with her MSW in May and we're seriously looking at relocating. It's just so bad everywhere.
