Jourdan Lewis thinks Lavert Hill and Ambry Thomas are 'Ahead of Where He Was'

Submitted by SkyPanther on

Jourdan Lewis hosted the "Jourdan Lewis WR vs. DB Skills Camp" in Detroit this past weekend. Lavert Hill and Ambrey Thomas attended. Here's what he said about them, and about Michigan's secondary:

According to Lewis, Hill and Thomas focused on attention to detail, repeating every drill until they had them down pat. He believes both are ahead of where he was at the same point in his Michigan career.

“I’m pretty sure they’re going to be one of the best, if not the best, secondaries in the country,” he said.

This would sound like Fred Jackson-level smoke, except we've already seen these guys in action.

We've got Hill, Thomas, AND Long. With Watson a known quantity as a quality player.

This is going to be fun.

I really hope Ambry gets the majority of the 3rd CB snaps. For one I think he's significanty more talented than Watson. Second it's going to be important to develop a starting CB for 2019 in the event one or both of Long and Hill leave early. Third, and I may be in the minority here, I was not impressed with Watson last year. He made a few nice plays but he was prone to give up one or two big plays every single game.

Was never impressed with Watson like some here, he is cocky for no reason. I remember against MSU his man dropped an easy catch and Watson popped up making a kicking motion yelling like he just made a play when it had nothing to do with him. Against OSU he gave up the huge 3rd down reception when the back qb came in, oner of my biggest hopes for improvement this season was Ambry Thomas taking Watsons's spot.

No, I can wait. I want summer NOW.

And believe me, this is coming from the guy who's been doing the countdown so far.

Just wait until August though when we all have nothing else to pass the time, and are driven to insanity...

Been saving up a ton of Michigan Football related things to watch and read (Including Hail To Old Blue and the Amazon series), for when that time comes though!

David Long had one of the best seasons in terms of opponent's QB percentage against last season as a sophmore.  That was Jourdan Lewis's big stat when he was a junior and a senior.  There are some players I am not worried about next season and that have already proven themselves as "dudes."  They include Gary, Winovich, Bush, Hudson, Hill, and Long.  All those guys will likely be drafted after next season. Higdon, Gentry, and maybe Evans are in that next group.

Everyone else on the team, for the most part, you can throw out the lame "prove it next season" moniker. Or you could just hope that it works out, like most fans.

TFLs from the front 7 can make QBs jumpy, and then the DBs look good.

But I hope he's right, and they really are better than him.

How many All Big 10 DBs can you fit into a Michigan secondary?

Will be interesting to see how many calls our front 7 will cause this year to keep the opposing OL honest. You can't double team them all and I like our odds 1 on 1, even better with an extra guy off the edge or up the middle with speed!

As we've seen, the refs basically give our opponents carte blanche to bearhug our DL and rip their jerseys off.  Makes single blocking more effective when you're given permission to cheat.

Brown's blitzes are designed to get a free hitter through the line so it won't work all the time, but it does annoy me.

is supposed to have great speed around the edge. That's why Michigan took him. If I rememeber right, they thought he had the quickest first step in the entire class.  Hope that injury is finally over by Sep 1.

While what you say is true, a good front 7 still can't hide poor DB's.  Lewis proved his worth in the NFL last year.  He also proved he had dropped too far in the draft because of his ex-GF.  If Lewis says the current DB's are good, I'll accept that at face value - without a caveat about the DL/front 7.

Long is not going to get the same love from Lewis or all the other Detroit homers on here but there is plenty of evidence he is the better corner.

But we are splitting hairs here. On any other team, Long, Hill, or Thomas would be the best cornerback.

The Michigan secondary is second to none in 2018.

Not sure I'd agree that Long wouldn't get the same love from Lewis.  Fact is, Long didn't attend the camp with Hill and Thomas, so he wasn't on Lewis' mind when he was asked about who he had just worked with.  Had Long been there, and played as well as they did, I'm pretty sure Lewis would have said so...

Lewis in the interview with Sam states "I never had the production that Hill and Long did, and Ambry is on his way". So he was giving love to Long, for what it's worth.

With our pass rush this year coupled with how strong our cover corners are, good luck to opposing pass offenses. If we get improvement from our safeties in coverage, it is going to be a top 3 or 5 unit again.

I was so wrong in regards to Jourdan Lewis.  I thought he would be too small and never play a meaningful down at Michigan.  And if he did, we would be in trouble.

He was soooo good.  The best cover corner since, hell, i don't know.  Probably Woodson.  I really liked Leon Hall's overall game and thought he was the best corner at Michgian since Woodson.  Hall is still more physical and a better tackler, but man, Lewis can just cover better than anyone.  And thats the most important attribute a corner can have.

And Lastly and most importantly for me, Lewis has stayed humble :)

How could a 2nd string DB be better than Lewis. I don't know that the 2 starters are better than him either. It would be profound to have 3 guys on 1 team better than him. Too good to be true. The front 7 getting into the backfield quick, and causing Don Brown "chaos", makes the current DBs look better.

But I like that he sees potential in them anyway.

Hill has shown himself to be on or very near Lewis’s level and by all accounts Thomas could be there as well. It’s just that it’s not possible to be better than Lewis who played the position to absolute perfection

I love Jourdan Lewis but he didn't play the position to absolute perfection. Perfection would've stopped that go-ahead FSU TD in the Orange Bowl.

In Lewis' defense though, no one can play that position to perfection. Denzel Ward was a top-5 pick and he got absolutely abused by Indiana in the first game of the season.
