Submitted by Arb lover on

Rivals is quoting Jon Jansen as reporting "phenomenal change" in Michigan OL this fall so far, over prior years. (Paywall)

Yawn, preseason hype from a friend of the program is preseason hype from a friend of the program, believe it when I see it.  It's been too long to do anything else.

I'm pretty sure we've heard this every year for the last 10 years.  Forgive me for taking this with a grain of salt.

With that being said, I do believe this O-Line will be much improved.  We just need to see it against the competition.

Bonderman worked on his change-up.

Wings are going to play more young guys.

Lions are getting Stafford some help.

Raymar Morgan/Derrick Nix/Branden Dawson “get it” now.

The only piece of unconfirmed hype we have been mislead by more often than the Michigan OL is improving is that MSU is actually changing their rape culture for real.

There's the story about how none of the OL could push the 900# sled in the winter and they all could in the summer.

There's some empirical data.

So Fuck you guys!

Go listen to Jon Jansen's podcast for the content Rivals is reporting. IIRC, he basically said we will be able to see the improvement and implied we will be an OL that goes forward on contact instead of a push or moving backwards.

I used to get Phil Steele's CFB preview magazine to help me with a gambling pool. All I really remember in team previews was junk like "this team's OL underperformed last year but all 5 starters return" implying that they would just automatically get better by being older or having another year together ignoring the fact that they may in fact just suck.

Not equating UM's OL with that line of reasoning but it reminded me of it.

I think they have to get better if nothing more for the trade-off of conflicting Frey/Drevno schemes for just Warinner.

2017

  • Khaleke Hudson added a ton of muscle
  • Great chemistry between QB1 and Receiver Y (Speight & Black were really good together until Black's injury)
  • This team is more physical in practice than in years past (Our run blocking wasn't bad, the pass blocking was. Defense was physical)
  • Highly-touted Recruit Z is poised to dominate now (DPJ, Black, Solomon all played wellish.)

Right. How many years have we heard this now? The new coach has simplified things etc. Time to shut up and win games.

Warinner will be this years Don Brown in terms of instant impact on the offense. I mean this dude built kansas' offensive line to be pretty damn good.

"Phenomenal changes" for an outfit that gave up 36 sacks last year (110th out of 129 teams) means maybe UM OL is back to baseline.

Which I guess given a mobile QB this year UM fans should or will be more or less happy with?

But the height and beef along the Michigan OL is pretty impressive though this fall:

LT Bushell-Beatty - 6-6, 318 lbs

LG Ben Bredeson - 6-5, 320 lbs

C Cesar Ruiz - 6-4, 319 lbs

RG Michael Onwenu - 6-3, 350 lbs

RT Jon Runyan, 6-5, 310 lbs.

Road-graders anyone?

If Michigan's offensive line improves significantly, yes, some of that credit may go to Ed Warriner, but I think a lot of people underestimate the impact of Ben Herbert, strength and conditioning coach.   That too was a good hire by Harbaugh:

I actually am willing to drink the Kool aid here. Everyone thinks run blocking will be very good and the pass blocking, specifically from the tackles is the big question. Well this year we replace Mason Cole with a true tackle. The problem with JBBs pash blocking last year was mostly with stunts combining with Owenu (who we still hear has issues with assignments). Now you put him next to Bredeson who is considered probably the best lineman. I think that improves JBBs personal pass protection and the LT spot pass protection. Then on the right side I expect Kugler as a senior to be better than Ulizio and more capable of dealing with stunts than the JBB/Owenu pair.

Almost got 100% with that comment, but I'm pretty sure Kugler is gone. Looking like Runyan or Hudson at RT.

I agree with the JBB/Bredeson combo doing work on the left side, especially in the run game. Super excited for Ruiz in the middle, and hoping Onwenu has everything figured out in the passing game.

We're going to be an excellent run blocking OL this year. And with the mobility of Shea, and how bad our passing game was last year, I think we're going to improve just because there isn't anywhere lower to go.

People are confusing "general spring hype about something" with "OL panic aaahhhh" from past years or something. I don't remember anything coming out in spring in past saying this type of glowing thing about OL.

IDK where all the "I hear this every year that our OL will be awesome, prove it on the field..." is coming from. General "spring hype prove it"... sure, but not OL specific from my memory.

Just be decent, that's all. Honestly an average offensive line probably sets us up to score at will against lesser foes and for us to be dangerous against the good defenses in the B1G.
