John U. Bacon: "If I had a guess" one year from now, Brad Bates will be the AD and one of the two Harbaughs will be the HC

Submitted by michgoblue on

John U. Bacon, just wrapped an interview on the Hugh Show.  When asked to guess who will be the HC of Michigan football one year from now, after giving several disclaimers and noting that it was just his guess, stated that one year from now, Brad Bates would be the AD and one of the two Harbaughs would be the HC.

He also said earlier in the interview that from talking to people who he knows who are close to Miles, Harbaugh and Harbaugh, he does not believe that any of that group would accept the HC spot with Brandon as AD.

Sorry, no link, as it was a radio interview.

I'm a little prejudiced because Brad Bates was a student the exact same years I was - 1977 to 1981.  Bo gave him a strong endorsement in his Lasting Lessons book.  Also, BB has not shown to be less of a candidate based on his time at Miami of OH and BC.  As for the Harbaugh boys, that's more of a stretch.  But one I'm willing to hold onto for now.

Well earlier I was convinced that neither Harbaugh would come here.  But now that Bacon is saying it is possible...  there is some hope !  I am assuming he at least has some sources close to the Harbaughs...

and he knopws Jack Harbaugh very well.   I believe in Bacon's theory.  Brandon would never talk to Harbaugh or Miles about the job, but if Bates was AD, the doors would open and the conversations would start.  This scenario wouldn't solve all the 'faction' issues, but a Harbaugh as HC and winning would calm it all down.

I'd even consider getting tickets agin if it all happens.

Yeah because the Michigan AD job is comparable to Miami of Ohio and Boston College. Oh wait he's a Michigan man, my bad. That criteria is working well for us now. The block M can also serve as blinders when looking at candidates. I'd rather take an assistant AD from a top level school, Michigan is in no position to take a chance on someone.

And while driving home, I purposely let someone in traffic that I normally would have cut off. And I swore off of using the F-word until at least next week.

He said Hoke is too stubborn about manball and punishes the team with a hard practice in pads on Sundays if they don't play well. He also said the players are losing interest in following him. Take it for what it's worth, but it seems Hoke's days are numbered.

I trust Bacon knows a good deal about the program, but this is speculation at this point.  Probably safe speculation, but still.  Yes, if Michigan moves on from Bradnon they'll probably try to get an AD with ties to the University, and one of the Harbaugh's would be a nice HC.  But again, we keep thinking both of those guys are looking to leave the NFL after one of them just won a Super Bowl two years ago and the other is still in high demand even if he doesn't work out in SF, where he's been to multiple conference championships in a row.

Allow me to say first that I've been reading this blog, and the boards, for years. Always good, sometimes great reading. Anyway, I must state that there will be some vagaries intentionally placed in this comment, at the request of the individual whom provided me the details. I live in Central Ohio, and my brother is an engineer in the city with which we were born and raised. Yesterday, while investigating old mapped info on sewer manholes, he and three coworkers were sent to a residence inhabited by a man, whom after some back and forth regarding the OSU hat worn by one of the four, declared that he had been friends with Jack Harbaugh since they coached together many years prior, and the two kept in contact quite frequently. After being told by my brother that I am a diehard UM supporter, he openly and freely stated that he and Jack had spoken just days prior, and that the family was not at all in favor of the chaos besieging the program currently. So much so that, at the finish of their collective seasons, and under the understanding from "friends" that an AD change is not only imminent but a foregone conclusion, Jim would be entering his name into the candidacy pool, and would almost overwhelmingly be chosen as the new HC. The only potential hiccup, as stated by the old man, would be the potential salary, which he said would take somewhere around $7m/year. My brother, always the pessimist and jokester, says he stated to the man that while he was amused by the story (and more than likely a bit frightened by the idea), he'd have a hard time believing the tale. That's when the man showed him a photo of the two from their coaching days, joined by the others on their staff. Once my brother arrived home, he contacted me, and through some interweb searching, were able to confirm the man had indeed coached with Jack, at the place and during the time he had described. Now, I'm sure I know what is to follow from many of you, considering the voracity I've seen directed at many whom have shared their insights on matters without declaring who it is that is their source, not to mention the fact that as you will see, I just officially joined tonight. Believe me, I know it sounds sketchy, and I myself would probably roll my eyes a bit while reading this, were it to have been shared by another. And that's fine. Trust me when I say that, while I myself wasn't educated at the university I care for so dearly, and have only had the pleasure (or displeasure, considering I brought my two oldest sons there for their first game just two Saturdays ago when I thought my wife and I had selected a sure fire winner of a game; both kids started crying at 27-7 and asked to leave BTW) of being in Ann Arbor a few times, I am in no way, shape, or form attempting to stir a pot that, quite frankly, doesn't need any more hands on the spoon. Thanks for taking the time to read my first contribution to the community. I hope that you all have a good night, and that we all have our day to celebrate this potentially fantastic development soon. Go Blue from Ohio P.S. Wrote this via my phone, so my bad if there are any blatant typos.
