John Beilein voted the cleanest coach in major CBB by his peers

And it's not even close. Beilein recieved 26.6% of the vote. Mike Brey was second with 10.5%

  • "John Beilein is a by-the-book, letter-of-the-law guy. LETTER-OF-THE-LAW. ... You get two hours to work out guys for the week. If he works out a kid and, say, they go one hour and one minute, he's going to start the next time with 59 minutes on the clock and go 59 minutes. That's the truth."
  • "Personally, we've gone up against him [in recruiting] ... and there's never been any issues. You go head-to-head with some of these guys, and you know what's going on. ... But nothing has popped up that's even been in the gray area [with Michigan]."
  •  "If you look over the course of his programs, they have a very unique way in how they recruit players. It's a very old-school approach. He has to see them. They only offer kids if they come to campus twice. Stuff like that. His background is such, and this is way vague, but guys that typically have cheated or do things the wrong way, they live their lives at a certain level of athletics for such a long period. But John Beilein worked his way up. He's never been an assistant -- only been a head coach his entire life. He's like, 'This is the only way do it, and I'm going to continue to do it.' [Guys like him] get to a point in their careers where they've been able to operate that way for so long, why risk their job and reputation?"

If I had to choose one or the other, I would rather lose clean than win dirty.  So it's easy for me to love Beilein.  He wins an awful lot considering how clean he is and how not clean much of his competition is.  I know some people think "the championship is all that matters and everyone else is an irrelevant loser," but I have just never felt that way.  I am glad Michigan can play clean and still win a lot of games.  I am so glad that Beilein is Michigan's coach.  Championships may be rare, but they will be very sweet.

It's great that he's so respected among his peers.

I'm among those who fully support playing by the rules even at the cost of a few games. Winning is great, but it's not worth cheating.

Michigan has a lot to offer, and it's reasonable to hold coaches to a pretty high standard of winning. IMO, it's even more important to hold our athletic programs to a very high standard of ethics.

Coach Beilein has been very successful, and is a shining example of class, ethics and integrity.

Thank you, coach Beilein!

... so super glad Beilein is Michigan's coach. He teaches, he runs a clean program, he excels, he shares credit, he doesn't throw his players under the bus.

...that you can recurit well and stay clean.  Being number 1 on the list is great, but so is being number 6.  I still think JB can recruit much better and still stay clean.

Which is why the Finals loss to Pitino and then elite 8 loss to Calipari sting that much worse.

If anybody deserves a national championship its Coach B.....and that's not coming from a place of UM bias, but just wanting to see a good man reach the mountain top.

From the Atlantic article on Beilein — thanks for posting it, Ghost of Fritz — I like this line of Beilein's: "Do the next right thing in your life."
