John Beilein has double-bypass heart surgery

Submitted by Don on

UM athletics just announced that Beilein had scheduled double-bypass heart surgery last night. Doesn't sound like it was an emergency, but he will not be going to Europe with the team.

Looks like Coach B is joining such luminaries as Krusty the Clown in the Zipper Club. Both my parents are members (and still kicking) but I hope to never join up myself.

Good luck in rehab coach! Hug that cushion!

Always found the episodes with Sideshow Bob (voiced by Kelsey Grammar) to be pretty funny.  If I recall there is one scene where he has "Die Bart Die" tattooed on his chest and when confronted about it in court says it is German for "You Bart You" because all he thinks about is how to be good to Bart.  And a juror says "How can a man who speaks German be bad".....good times good times

Wow, you'd never guess it by looking at him and his activity level. That said, my Dad had three bypass operations and felt better and more energetic after each one. But he was sore as hell after having the chest opened up.

Another point to make, for those not familiar with this procedure, is that it's usually about the arteries and not the heart. Expect Coach is just in the unlucky gene club for arteries as you'd expect him to have a great ticker.

it is almost always the diet, not genes

people think it is genes because if a parent has it, the kid has it, but they also eat the same diet as well

also, skinny =/= healthy - it is why some runners drop dead of a heart attack because eating crap and exercising doesn't make you healthy

speaking as a testimonial to all this myself

There are some that do have arteries that are susceptible to blockage.

But you're correct that diet is everything.

Replace as much animal protein at possible with plant protein. It will not eliminate your risk of cardiovascular disease but it will dramatically lower it.

It's crazy how many people consider a diet change as drastic, but are willing to have their chest ripped open in order to avoid changing how they eat. But to each their own.

Get well Coach B!

Genetic factors likely play some role in high blood pressure, heart disease, and other related conditions. However, it is also likely that people with a family history of heart disease share common environments and other potential factors that increase their risk.

- my opinion - many people use genetics as an excuse as to why it isn't their fault and don't bother with proper diet - this is an issue with today's "not your fault" society

“What you do and how you live is going to have a larger impact on whether you are in ideal cardiovascular health than your genes or how you were raised,“ said Norrina Allen, the lead study author and a postdoctoral fellow in preventive medicine at the Feinberg School.

The Northwestern Medicine study looked at three generations of families including 7,535 people at age 40 and a separate group of 8,920 people at age 50. The goal was to see who was in ideal cardiovascular health at these two critical periods in middle age.

Genetics have a huge impact for those who are highly susceptible to cardiovascular disease.

However, only a SMALL percentage of the 90 million Americans with CVD are genetically susceptible, and an even SMALLER percentage are likely to have a CV event with proper diet and lifestyle modifications. Genetic susceptibility does not equal a guarantee to have CVD.

As I stated above, it's obviously a person's right to choose how they live their life. But a simple diet change (e.g. Instead of eating animal protein for 21 meals/wk, drop it down to once/day; with the ultimate goal replacing as much as possible) can tremendously lower your CV risk.

Diet, genetics, and lifestyle all play an important part.

Two of the three you can change yourself, so work on those two.

Everyone knows the answer. Proper diet and exercise. Genetics can't be changed and sometimes you can only delay the inevitable or reduce the impact, but in todays world, you won't eliminate the threat that genetics pose

All bets are off if you smoke. If you smoke, there's nothing you can do. You have screwed yourself into oblivion. There is nothing you can do worse to your long term health than smoking.

Prayers for him.

Incidentally, he just sent a personal message (on voice mail as well as by letter) to a friend of mine’s son who is undergoing chemo for leukemia. Beilein is as classy a coach as any team could ask for. Give me Beilein and good character over wins any day.

Beilein has probably had a lots of subs these last couple years.  Needs to lay off the mayo!

It was a scheduled surgery and was successful so he'll probably recover quickly.

Get well soon Coach B.

Very proud of the great work that is done at the UM hospital. Dr Eagle who heads the Frankel Cardiovascular Center was Bo's doctor. Lots of miracles done there every week saving Wolverines and Buckeyes alike.

I was lucky to meet Coach while boarding a flight in DTW for MCO a couple of weeks ago.  I first noticed his slick Jordans and then realized who he was.  Struck up a conversation about hoops, including why he was headed to Orlando, and he seemed genuinely interested in how things were going for my wife and I hauling four kids to see the mouse.  Truly one of the nicest people I have ever met.

Izzo was on the same flight.  Just before he walked by my seat, I badly wanted to stand in front of him and start laughing like Charles Mathews.  With the kids nearby, I just kept to myself.  Anyone have that gif for a Tuesday morning pick me up?

Hope his recovery goes well. My father had a triple bypass and then lived 25 more years. I'm sure the procedure has improved since then.

Kinda OT but recently Dantonio and Izzo were both hospitalized for cardiac-like symptoms. But upon evaluation it was discovered that neither had a heart...or just a severely atrophied facsimile thereof. The report is that MSU recently purchased a $5,000,000 carpet to sweep this matter under.

Otherwise, hoping Coach Beilein recovers well.
