John Beilein's Coaching Staff Player Evaluations

Submitted by IvyLeague on

Is there a better a coaching staff at finding overlooked players? I can't think of one but maybe I'm biased with my Maize and Blue goggles on? The only I can think of is possibly Wisconsin, but even that staff isn't close IMO.

yeah unfortunately chatman hasnt earned his teammates / coaches trust yet.  he gets lost on almost every single defensive possession and in transition / slow break.  hes struggling more than most adjusting to d1 level and finding his game without being the superstar.  dudes got potential but needs serious injection of confidence and year or 2 to learn to play team ball at this level.

12 on the other hand is a beast.  obviously he was already forcing coachs hand before all the injuries, now hes showing why given all the extra clock.  if he bangs those 3s with any consistency, he could be a nightmare guard (and if he tightens his handle even more in offseason, look out).  coach obviously found another gem.

they likely werent going very far this year anyway, silver lining to injury bug is accelerated development of next yrs squad.  12 and 24 thrown into the fire and forced to play those tough minutes and irvin forced to actually rebound and create his own buckets

Irvin has been the biggest disappointment so far, and I'm sure he'd say he is disappointed with his own play.  This team is playing well enough to take Wiscy to OT and take Sparty to OT in Breslin.  Irvin can still salvage a good year if his shot starts falling.  If that happens, Michigan can still surprise some people.  I'm not giving up hope until they are mathematically elminated from tournament consideration.

As for next year, this could be a great team.  Nobody seems to be playing well enough to be a sure first-rounder, so everyone who is eligible should be back.  LeVert may be projected in the first round now, but a flock of early entries could change that.  He would be better off to wait until deadline day to make a decision.

See also: Mitch McGary...? Oh wait, he actually figured it out... I know both Donnal and Chatman have only three years of eligibility left and everything, but I think they still have a chance at becoming good if not great players. Beilein has a knack for helping players continually improve. Plus the fact that Chatman started at the beginning of the year kind of gives me the idea that maybe he was showing something prior to the beginning of the season that isn't what we are seeing now. Wait to see what these guys look like next year before you think that Beilein screwed up on those two guys.

If you trust Beilein (and why would you not) you have to come to grips with just that point.  Clearly he showed some nice ability to earn the starting gig over the other options.

Chatman is playing some awful awful basketball right now, but you can see flashes of why he was so highly recruited.  He is just so mentally out of sorts now and lacking confidence that it's really disrupted his entire game.

Chatman could still be the best player in this class.  I say that as I guy who predicted before the seasons that Kam would backup Dawkins.

What future do you think that Kameron Chatman and Mark Donnal will have at Michigan beyond this season?

Would Chatman benefit from a redshirt season in 2015-16 to help him regain whatever confidence he might've had when this season began and he was in the starting lineup?

Could Donnal, who also began the season as a starter, be viewed as someone who might be good for a few minutes a game over the next two seasons, behind Ricky Doyle and D. J. Wilson, but who'd be able to contribute more and be as effective as a fifth-year senior as Max Bielfeldt has been this season?

And that's why I think that Mark Donnal will be given the chance to develop enough so that he could be making significant contributions as a fifth-year senior, if not earlier.

Kam Chatman seems to have lost confidence and become tentative, but he apparently showed enough skills during the pre-season to have warranted a starting role when the season began. I don't know whether he'll be able to recover that confidence before this season ends, but I believe that the coaches will give him the opportunity during the summer and next pre-season to prove that he can be a significant contributor, even if he won't be able to win back a starting role.

Keep building for 2015 the seasons over anyways enjoy game by game if they make the NIT sweet. Either way Beileins working his ass off and it will pay off next year

Great coach and I wouldn't trade him for anyone, well maybe coach K. Having said that, he really needs to stop sitting guys with 2 fouls, at least under extenuating circumstances like having to play walkons. Dakich and the other walk on played most of the 1st half with MAAR on the bench the whole time. That was unnecessary and it probably cost Michigan the game today as MAAR was our best player and he was wasted on the bench. I don't think he even picked up another foul the rest of the game, so a player that ends the game with only 2 fouls sat out over 10 minutes in the 1st half. Unnecessary and much too rigid.

I agree about this point - MAAR had it going and considering the circumstances with being so shorthanded, it would have been wise to bring him back before halftime.

I would also like to see Doyle for more minutes, although Max played well. But you can keep coack K, respect him but hate that rat...

Even if he played the same minutes with a different distribution of them so MAAR was not out for over 10 straight minutes would be better. I don't think he wore out at all, Spike and Bielfelt were dominating the offense but even so, a wore out MAAR is better than the walkons.

When a guy goes from wanting the ball on most possessions - and scoring - to being passive and watching his teammates do the shooting, that's generally a sign of fatigue.  He played a career high in minutes today, so it's not surprising.

Coach B has a good eye for talent, and is probably the best at player development!

Quite amazing to see how Dawkins and MAAR have progressed, also saw some good things from Zak on D and passing the ball. a great effort to get this team to OT today.

Now just need to get Kam's confidence back and get him going! and perhaps throw up the stop sign on Max's 3's....

MAAR was sent to him by a coaching contact local to MAAR (I think in PA).  So in a way we got lucky there.  That was due to a connection.

But its crazy how the recruiting evaluations are complety upside down this year

Our best player might be MAAR, a 2 star.  Dawkins and Doyle next.  Our top 100 player was redshirted, and our top 30 player looks like he should have redshirted this year as he is overwhlemed by the game.

Makes all our preseason predictions based off stars just foolish. (hand raised)

I like this batch of players but we seriously need to add athleticism to this team.  This is a mediocre MSU team - we just need some guys to match up with other teams athletes.  We made Matt Costello look like a jumping jack today.

But, but, they whiffed on 5* kids!  Beilein is terrible at recruiting!

I believe before it is all said and done. This class will do something very special. There is talent there and they all appear to be 4 year program talent. Match this with Walton and 1 impact player and big things will come......
