Jim McElwain Press availability: May play multiple QBs

Submitted by jimmyshi03 on

Just saw a couple tweets from Florida beat guys. Some interesting stuff.

Gators coach Jim McElwain says all three QBs could play. "I think there's some things they all bring to the table that's really good."

McElwain: "We haven't gotten into Michigan prep at all. When you guys get their roster let me know who we're playing." #Gators

Mac says it's not disconcerting that they don't have a starting quarterback because he "likes how they're playing."

Mac on Michigan: "A couple years ago they physically dominated us."

But I'd bet that as it stands now, Del Rio would get at least the bulk of the first half snaps. He has the highest floor and you may want to just keep the game close to the vest.

Honest question: has there been any real talk of Callaway not sitting the game? I haven't seen anything official saying that McElwain is leaning towards reinstating him. Or even being on the fence about it. Even if Callaway helped UF win the game, McElwain would take a lot of heat from everyone not named Finebaum if he went back on his decision to suspend him. Would just be a bad look for him.

And then imagine if he reinstated Callaway and Florida still lost. He would not be able to fall back on "at least we won." That's the kind of decision that would play a big part in getting you fired.

That all came out of a press conference when a reporter asked about the players being reinstated to the team. McElwain said it wasn't necessarily going to be through the Michigan game. But, when I listened to the quote it sounded to me that he was referring to being allowed to practice again and wasn't necessarily referring to the game status.

That said, I would not be shocked if he were to play.

The question asked about participation before the Michigan game (including practice, not necessarily including but also not excluding playing in a game). McElwain handwaved the question by saying "when it's resolved." I took that to be an entirely reasonable dodge that avoids setting any timetable.

It doesn't eliminate the possibility of Callaway playing, but it also doesn't abrogate the original statement that the players were suspended for the first game.

You know what they say: when you have multiple QB starters, you have no QB starters. If our offense can move the ball reasonably well, this will turn out well

"When you guys get their roster let me know who we're playing"

Really shooting yourself in the foot there Mac. Harbaugh is not the coach to take cheap shots at over inconsequential stuff less than two weeks before a game.

I know it's funny to poke fun at us not posting a roster but for a guy like McElwain cmon man. I know he was trying to make a joke, but if you're truly desparate to figure out who is WLB2 you can look at last years roster, see who we brought in, and you pretty much know who you're playing against. If he actually needs a roster to gameplan, then he's going to be fired sooner than I thought
