Jim Harbaugh, video: Dylan McCaffrey Has "It"

Submitted by SkyPanther on

At BIG10 Media Day Jim Harbaugh was asked about QB Dylan McCaffrey. He had some good things to say:

Dylan.... he's got a lotta that, you know, it factor to him, that winning factor. It shows up in 2 minute drives. 2 minute drive, Dylan gets in there and he leads the team down, ah... for touchdowns. That's what was happening in the Spring.

...you know he's got that kinda it, it thing...

He's got that 6'5" frame, you know, and he's gettin' everything coordinated... gettin' strong so he can really get everything coordinated with the throwing motion...

...Yeah, you know, you like everything about him. I thought he improved the most of all quarterbacks from last season to this season. (italics, bold mine)

1:11 video from The Michigan Insider: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mbMILXVsQ4

Many will remember Don Brown speaking very highly of Dylan McCaffrey last year, when he was on the practice squad:

Let me tell you now... our scout team, without question, with Dylan McCaffrey at the helm, they go now. It's next door to what you want on a Saturday.

This guy... it's like his business to get us ready to play. That's his business.

There's a couple plays yesterday, where he has to re-center the tight end, re-center the back, and then run this specific scheme. Ok? I swear it was the quarterback from Minnesota doin' it. Because he did it exactly the same way. So, you know, our guys got him watching a little tape there. But then to come out and actually do it the same way? I mean... It gives you a chance. And that's really what you're looking for. I mean, it just gives you a chance.

But for Dylan... it's his world. And when a guy takes it upon himself like that, it just, he takes the whole group with him. And that gives us a chance to have a quality practice. And you don't realize how important that is until at the end of practice you go, wow, that was really a good practice. We got a lotta work done. And it gives you a chance.

Pretty rare, pretty rare.

This is a special guy now.

It's nice when you have a scout team that, you know, they're committed to the defense... and he spearheads it. (italics, bold mine)

Apparently, Dylan McCaffrey has put on 13 pounds from last year, and is up to 210.

The last name alone tells me he won’t be a bust. I hope he is the real deal and can replace Patterson if he leaves after this year.

Serious question: Did Brandon Peters steal your girlfriend?

What is your problem? You realize that is family probably reads this blog and all your not-so-subtle leaving his name out of the QB equation or "will he transfer" talk is player bashing.

I think since McCaffrey was recruited his upside is supposedly higher than Peters.

Also if BP's family is reading a Michigan blog and making decisions about their son's future because someone on a message board likes the backup quarterback..well...then I don't know but it sounds pretty absurd. I'm sure Brandon knows the situation, and his parents, more than we do and probably assume that what the coaches say and do are more pertinent to their decision making process than SkyPanther (no offense Panther)

Brandon Peters has the most upside of any QB on this roster and fits our offensive scheme better than Patterson.

I am not talking just about this 1-2 punch OP post and reply from the same account - I won't go into that again but if you want some reference check out this thread https://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/little-bird-scouting-report-michigan%27s-4-qbs-video

I think that McCaffrey is going to be a great QB here but it is in our best interest that Peters stays here and then competes for the starting QB in 2019 - if he doesn't beat out Patterson this year.

I agree with what you say about Peters and I believe he will be the starting QB a few games into the season .. When he was healthy he played like he would be the next great Michigan QB then he got injured and it seems like everyone turned on him..

"I believe he [Peters] will be the starting QB a few games into the season"

Wait ... assuming Patterson starts against ND, you're saying Peters takes over a few games in?  Is that because you think Peters will improve that much?  Or because you think Patterson isn't the QB some think he is, and he'll show his shortcomings a few games in?

If that's the case, then he'll play.  I also think if that was the case he would've been first off the bench last year.  Whether or not he has the most upside though is conjecture at this point.

And the link you posted is about DM being a guy in the future. I agree, that it's best if Peters stays..but again, if Peters wins the job, stays for 2 years, does McCaffrey transfer? Or if you have 2 guys who are unable to separate themselves, do you go with the younger one?  Or maybe Milton is Cam Newton/Vince Young reborn and walks away with the job next year.

Either way, his family possibly reading the blog is not really that meaningful is it?

"Brandon Peters has the most upside of any QB on this roster and fits our offensive scheme better than Patterson."

Given that you haven't seen Patterson, McCaffrey, or Milton take a single snap for Michigan, what is it that leads you to conclude BP has more "upside"?

How, specifically, is BP better suited to our offensive scheme than Patterson or McCaffrey? Especially since we're supposedly going to incorporate RPOs more extensively in our packages?

Im saying what i see on the field. Peters is Uber talented, he can make all the throws. Hes smart and doesnt seem to make alot of mistakes.( Sometimes you just need a qb that wont turn it over, ala Brian Griese. He wasnt a great QB but he just took care of the ball.) But he seems to zone out sometimes, and I dont think hes tough, he got knocked out a couple of times last year, he seems soft and a little quiet and nonchalant. Im not saying he doesnt have what it takes to be a good QB, Im saying that what Ive seen from him so far leads me too believe that he may not be a division 1 QB, I could see him transferring to the MAC or something. Or just being on the sidelines holding the clipboard as a solid backup.

I'm only posting news. I'm not down on Brandon Peters. Both could be starters on lots of college teams. I think it was significant that Jim Harbaugh said McCaffrey has "it". I mean, look at his history with QBs. So I posted it here.

And I agree, I don't think Brandon Peters parents care about this. I doubt they ever will see it. They may have seen Don Brown and Jim Harbaugh on those videos anyway. Now those, they might mean something to them.

And, no offense taken.

Let's not do the whole "players' family is reading this blog" schtick. Or are we only supposed to say we think every player on the roster is going to be All-American to not offend someone?

This is a fans sports blog with worthless fan opinions. If a player gets so butt hurt over that then their skin isn't thick enough to play here anyway. Do not bash players but wanting a back up to start over someone else as a fan is not bashing anyone.

Aspyr if your family is reading this I would like to apologize. I think you will be All-American.

I don't think he has to put up great numbers...I think if he plays at Wilton Speight 2016 pre-injury or Ruddock the last half of 2015...an NFL team will take him. Also, not sure if this is a strong QB draft class, but NFL types seem to be aware of his upside. Now I think he'd need monster numbers OR a memorable season to be a top 5 pick.

I hope its true that he has "it," but I'll be surprised if Shea isn't the starter. Personally, I think this is JH misdirection to keep Shea on his toes, as well as to keep the media from focusing only on Shea.

Harbaugh did say all of that.  He said that after he talked about Patterson and Peters.  To me, it's pretty clear the pecking order is Patterson-Peters-McCaffrey-Milton.  Obviously, this could change a year from now as McCaffrey continues to learn the offense and possibly during fall camp, but I'll be surprised if this isn't the QB depth chart for 2018.

This. I could see them pulling Shea 3-4th quarter if it's not close to keep him healthy and give our other QBs some experience, since by all accounts there are several who have the schemes down and are successful in practice.

More importantly i think, DBs quote about the scout team pushing the d and making great practices is not something you hear often and hopefully it translates to a spectacular on field preparedness.

Man we have some good QBs, it wouldnt surprise me if McCaffrey surpasses Peters very soon. Peters is very talented but he seems to zone out sometimes and lacks that fire or that :it" factor. It wont surprise me if he transfers after this year. I like him alot and he is very talented and way better than Okorn but I see him transferring to a Mac school or something.

If he actually thought this highly of him then it was no point in getting Patterson... Now he possibly will be sitting behind a QB for 2 years

These burner accounts have gotten out of hand. You have the same person replying to the OP  but as a different user.

To think, I kinda miss the FranklinHatchett days. At least we all knew he was trolling and making it pretty obvious who he really was.

As a quick note, the comment from Brown last year, while great as far as leadership goes, does almost nothing to speak to McCaffrey's ability to handle Michigan's playbook and run Michigan's offense efficiently.

He was operating the scout team. Most likely meaning the scout team was shown a play card in the huddle with everyone's routes and progressions, usually "this is the guy they almost always throw to, if he's not open throw it to this guy" (throwing INTs isn't a punishable offense on the scout team and not throwing the ball is actually frowned upon because the DBs need to get work on defending passes).

I'm not saying McCaffrey doesn't have "it" (he is a very smart kid with all the bloodlines you could ask for and a huge upside). I'm saying being able to run a scout team doesn't really mean a ton (JOK could run the scout team too). I could operate the hell out of our scout team in HS because I could just let it rip without fear of getting yelled at for forcing a slant or just bailing out and throwing a fly route. I would get yelled at if I didn't throw a pass because the whole point was the defense getting to see plays ran to their conclusion. INT, sack, or otherwise. When it came to our offense I would get timid about throwing an INT or had to remember all the plays with no play card to remind me of my 2nd or 3rd option right before the snap...

Which is why I switched to WR in our offense :)

For the first time since Harbaugh has been coach, Michigan has a legitimate qb competition heading into fall practice. For the last three years, the job has been a default decision based on whether we could get the most qualified guy ready by opening game. In that respect, having Rudock and Speight as the most qualified, sufficed with uncertain backup experience in the wings. Last season, Michigan paid the price for lack of more quality depth at that position, mainly because of protection issues which hampered the team's overall performance leading to a disappointing 8-5 season.

Back in the day, in the mid-90's, qb depth at Michigan wasn't a luxury, it was a given. In 1995, Michigan had five legitimate qbs on the depth chart, all of whom would eventually start and in some cases take the team to major success including a national championship. Michigan is now building that kind of depth at qb under Harbaugh. It is the one position that takes the most development and skill, mixed with experience, savvy and attention to detail, with the right coach to nurture and enhance it. We've already seen the evidence of that. Now, we need a guy who can flourish in a competitive environment, deal with the pressure of winning and taking offensive responsibility when thing go wrong, and lead this team during adverse times and situations to victory.

Things are looking up, and we are building that championship veneer that starts with dependable performance and leadership at quarterback. May the best man win.

1995 is a cute bit of revisionist history. Yes, there were a lot of QBs on the roster that would eventually start; none of them were ready to excel in 1995. Dreisbach had the comeback against Virginia, of course, but the offense in 1995 (not to mention 1996) was mediocre and the QBs were basically expected to manage the game and not mess up too much.

The "depth" you speak of was "bullets in the chamber" as various guys were tried out to find what could work. Griese eventually won the job outright in 1997 and did a good job with a relatively under-talented offense, and by 1998 Dreisbach was a backup to Tom Brady. But even with these names and with those teams the actual performance on the field was only pretty good, years down the road.

Man, I want an edit feature. There's nothing offensive about your post, and my first sentence in this response drips with contempt that I don't want to express and is not merited by a disagreement on what "depth" means vis a vis 1995. My apologies. I should have worded it: "I don't think we can use the word "depth" regarding 1995."

Can't wait to see that kid in a game. All's I know is that I like Patterson/Peters/McCaffrey/Milton as our QB options more than the options we've had in Jimmy's first three years here.

By far the most talent he's ever had here.

Rudock was very good, but he didn't have the ceilings Patterson, McCaffrey, Milton, or Peters (kind of tempered) have just because he wasn't 6'5 (McCaffrey/Milton) didn't have a rocket for an arm (Milton) and wasn't a 5 star (Patterson). Speight was nowhere close to the talent either but did very well.

Just have to have a hit on 2/4 of these guys to be set up well for the future.
