Jim Harbaugh on the Mitch Albom Show

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on

Coach Harbaugh was on the Mitch Albom Show yesterday for an interview, which apparently went pretty well.  I can't find a link to the podcast, but MLive has a summary and some quotes.

Harbaugh on Bo Schembechler: "I'm living about five houses from him, where he lived in Ann Arbor. There's probably not a day that goes by where I'm going into work and I say 'Bo probably made his left (here or right there).' ... You're always reminded of his work ethic and his love for football and coaching at the University of Michigan."

"He molded your DNA. He's got a way, like a raw iron that they put into one of those ovens. He can mold it, twist it. ... He had a will, an iron will that molded men and I'm fortunate to be one of the thousands who benefitted from his teaching."

This will be BIG for recruiting as are ALL radio interviews. Listed as the #1 factor in all of recruiting according to a 1932 study by the Anchorage Gazette.

"There have been many days where the head hits the pillow and you go to sleep saying 'we got better today.' ... It's been good and we want to be even better the next six and a half months."

He also says that they simply "went to work", which for me has been the most refreshing part of all this - the break from the last seven seasons when it came to expectations seems to have been made about as cleanly as possible. That in itself seems to have worked wonders with the team as a whole.

Even people who like Successories posters roll their eyes when Albom opines on anything, noting "well, geez, Mitch Albom's observations seem obvious and trite - does he think his readers are idiots?".

That stated, I like the fact that Mitch is keeping the shoe polish market afloat, what with his hair and all.

Yesterday was Tuesday. They should do this weekly and write a book about it and call it "Tuesday's with Jim" or something creative like that. seriously though, I really enjoyed Tuesday's With Morrie. What has Albom done to have a reputation as arrogant?

He delivered a package to Albom, who was in Ann Arbor for his Fab Five book. Albom answered the door rudely and then threw the clipboard back at my dad after signing for the package. Mitch Albom is a horse's ass and not good enough of a writer to get away with being one.

I also ran into him when he was staying in Ann Arbor one summer working on his Fab Five book - at the CCRB. He played pick-up ball there, but that's a generous way of describing what he was doing on the court. He was an obnoxious asshole who compensated for being short by hacking and then gave people an attitude about it.

Harbaugh is my neighbor and we heard him setting off fireworks in his yard on the 4th of July.  My family walked over and we waved at him from the street.  I hustled back and told my neighbors across the street to prepare the fireworks.  My neighbors always go all out for the 4th of July.  For about 10 minutes we had a war where my neighbor would light their biggest firework and Jim Harbaugh would respond 30 seconds later.

Eventually Jim stopped responding and my neighbors still had another 45 minutes of fireworks but it was a fun battle while it lasted!

to believe that you even graduated high school, much less college.  I find it harder to believe that you're a teacher, or coach, or whatever you claim to be.

It must be one shitty school district, because you are without a doubt one of the dumbest posters on this site.  At least try to be funny or something.

You say that as if you hit us with knee slapper after knee slapper. All you do is post about girls, drugs, and vodka, as a 40 year old Id say thats pretty lame if you are a family man. If I can only accomplish as much the next 13 years of my life I might be like you when im 40!!! Hey, post another e-card, would ya?!?!

Mitch has a really funny recap of the Cowherd/Harbaugh interview. Apparently Mitch hates Cowherd and is pretty open about it. His analysis of the interview is pretty spot on though.

Edit: Great line at the beginning, "It's never good to interview with a guy if you're a sports person and the person interviewing you last name is 'cowherd'"

He has (several) other, wildly successful day jobs and really doesn't need to be a "brand" in radio.

EDIT: When I note his "wild success", it's not that I think he's awesome. As others here have noted, his opinions are pretty much trite drivel. But, to the original point I made, spooning out pablum to Book of the Month clubs has made him a very rich man.

Only time will tell, and I now this may be splitting hairs, but it seems like this situaiton is one of two things:

  1. For Harbaugh, this really IS a dream job and his intention is to stay for the long haul and become Bo 2.0 (unles the novelty wears off); or
  2. This is just the trademark EUTM, which right now just happens to be Ann Arbor focused.

Does anybody know more about his tenure at San Francisco or at Stanford?  Was he THIS enthusiastic about Palo Alto, or coaching for the 49ers?

I don't know much about his previous jobs, except to say that each was better than the last.  Up until his time with the 49ers he was climbing the coaching ladder, with each stop involving more prestige, money, and responsibility than the one before.

I think there's a strong case to be made for #1.  I think he loves coaching above all else, and his job in A2 allows him to coach without dealing with all of the ego's and politics of the NFL.  He's making a lot of money and his young kids are in a great place to grow up.

For all of the "his wife doesn't want to leave the bay area" BS from before, I think it's entirely possible that she encouraged him to take the Michigan job to provide stability for their kids.

TL DR - Jim Harbaugh loves Michigan and he's here for the long haul.

Does anyone know what street Harbaugh is on and Bo was on? Not a stalker-y thing; just curious where the big men in Ann Arbor choose to live.
