Jersey Changes Post-Hoke/Brandon

Submitted by Geaux_Blue on
Haven't seen this come up in the wake of the personnel changes:

Not exactly a cancer-curing topic but I'm curious: how would you like Michigan to handle jerseys in 2015 and beyond? Re-retire the legacy jerseys? Require multiple year commitment to wear #1? Avoid Jerseyz or whatever the kids call special event uniforms?

I'll hang up and listen

Please get rid of those horrid legends jerseys. Such a stupid idea.

1. Creates entitlement and class hierarchy within the team
2. It's a money grab
3. I think it looks ugly and takes away from the classic look of the jersey.
4. It conflicts with the famous position group numbers we have that are not retired (e.g. 77, 1, 2)
5. No player should have to change their number and take away from their own legacy by switching and having to live up to that previous legends legacy. I get that it's an "honor" but it's unnecessary pressure to put on a player

I could go for some helmet stickers, although smaller than the ones before would be preferable.

Delete the legends jerseys, delete retired numbers. Anyone can wear any number. Numbers honored around stadium if people want that.

Also have always liked the idea of team captains wearing a C like in hockey or I think UGA football does that...Like the idea of captains in general and was pretty annoyed that the team didn't pick any until after the season this year.

Helmet Stickers would be a great tradition for Coach Harbaugh to bring back....after all,  it was Coach Schembechler who started it when he was at Miami.

Legend jerseys should just go away. While it's good to remind the current players about the past, today's generation remembers more about recent success than what happened 50+ years ago. There are other ways to honor those special players and teams. In 2017 I would prefer a homecoming of the NC team instead of bringing back single players every so often.

I have always thought the legends pactch was poorly designed but I do like the idea of recognizing those jerseys.  Good idea, poor execution.  It needs to be much more subtle.  Perhaps on the interior of the collar so the player is reminded of it when the jersey is hanging in his locker.

Keep it traditional.  If they must do a special uniform game, I like the idea of the blue on blue, just not with all that flare that was on this year's UTL jerseys.

with Legends jerseys for one game a year.  But they shouldn't be permanent.  I'd like the new guys to have a chance to make a number famous themselves.

No one at Michigan gave a damn about #21 until Desmond Howard.

There were some tweets out there today that Hackett actually asked for player input on the whole Nike / Adidas debate, which if true is a nice change in tone from the AD's office. It would be interesting to know what the players themselves think about it, in my opinion. I don't think the Adidas contract is up for a couple years yet, but I find these developments encouraging.

Get rid of Legacy Jerseys, no uniformz EXCEPT perhaps in a non-Playoff bowl game. Let the players wear whatever they like then. Also, #1 should go to sure-thing WR, and #2 should go to  a CB likely to be drafted in the 1st round. Otherwise, hands off.

I like the legacy jersey idea but not the execution. I thought maybe a small block M patch on the collarbone with the name underneath it without any sort of backing would look nice. Maybe even Gold so it's different from the Maize.

I wouldn't limit the number to that retired player's position though. Let it be a generalized "we think you work hard and have promise, kid." thing.

Forget the legends jerseys and keep two alternate uniforms: the all blue from this year and the yellow highlighter away uniforms from the Alabama game or the ones from the South Carolina bowl game.

I've always respected PSU and USC for having no names on the jersey back. In the Mgoblog UFR era I'ive softened on this a bit for the obvious reason. Still, this program needs a reboot and i could see that being a key element.

Why can't we just be a normal school and put our national championships and honored numbers on the press boxes/suites? In its quest to promote the "Michigan Difference," the school often comes up short. Different isn't always best.

Blue at home, white on the road, maize pants all the time. Get rid of the damn pipping on the white jersey. This is Michigan, we don't recruit kids who are distracted by shiny objects. Keep the legacy number program, but only for seniors.

That makes no sense to me. Why would a senior that had spent three years establishing an identity and legacy want to change numbers in their final season. It eliminates the chance of another number achieving "legendary" status. Just randomly assign them to freshmen, or don't give them out at all.

Big YES to the uniform suggestions (no to the legacy numbers).

Think home jersey, but blue on white.

The various undershirts, pads, sleaves, etc. should be solid jersey color, with no unnecessary pattern/stripe/"MICHIGAN" (clutter) on them.  Anything else is not uniform.

Busy, inconsistent, and cluttered is a missed opportunity.

Simple, consistent, and clean is powerful, unifying, and classic (yet timeless).

  • Keep the legends jerseys, hand them out to freshman that want them (if they need to write a paper or whatever that's cool too) and if a number becomes available I don't have a problem with an upperclassmen asking to switch either.
  • No helmet stickers. Sorry, Bo.
  • No more home alternates. I'm fine with the away jersey being changed around and I'd prefer more white and less piping.
  • I absolutely don't get the QB 98 hate. It wouldn't work for everyone, actually Gardner is probably the only recent QB who "fits", but he looked awesome in 98. If he won 20-21 games and made that two point conversion in 2013 I don't think anyone would be complaining.

I loved the all Navy jerseys from under the lights 3 so I like the direction that they're going. Traditionalist like myself need to suck it up and accept that the young generation loves the new alternate uniformz and that they're here to stay. I cringed at the idea of the maize jerseys but hell at this point I'm ready to see them.

...build a monument park and honor teams, coaches, players, legends.

Build statues for all players who had their #'s retired, plus Woodson and AC and Jake Long.

No more legends uniforms.

Alternate uniforms for UTL only - not for bowls or neutral site games.

Please let's get rid of all the extraneous junk on the uniforms. The block M above the last name; the BiG logo; the large Adidas logo. Check out how the home jerseys looks at the tail end of the Carr era. Much cleaner.

The perfect place to honor Michigan's best is to put the name and number in Maize along the bottom section of the suites on each side of the stadium.  Right now, it's just a big blue boring area that could use some major Maize lettering.  I think it's the perfect place for Kramer, Harmon, Woodson and Howard and the other prominent figures in Michigan football history.

I love how everyone talks about the Legands jersey's taking away from a players honor/legacy when we are not the one's wearing the damn thing. As Funchess demonstrated it appears that one could decline and continue wearing their original number or switch to a non-Legands one. While I dislike the practice, if they want to change let them change! It literally hurts no one. (formatting>on phone)
