Jake Butt is 50/50 on NFL

Submitted by dnak438 on

Jake Butt expects to decide his NFL future in the next week or so. Says he's 50/50. Needs to get Harbaugh's input.

And just because I can't help myself and have the maturity level of a 12 year old...

If Butt is "50/50 on the NFL", as the thread title states, does that mean he has one cheek on the NFL and the other on the NCAA?

This is an important quote. If Butt has already seen what Harbaugh has done for his stock, then he might see what could happen next year. I love Rudock, but at the beginning of the year he went away from Butt. Next year gives Butt the chance to cement a 2nd round pick.

mean the Compubox Champion of the World. He quite literally just mastered the scoring system. Near the end I just began to realize that he is not even really that great of a boxer, he is just smarter than the people he fights. Which I guess is impressive in its own right but I'm not paying 79.99 with fees and costs to watch a guy be smart for an hour.

You are right on the money. As a former boxer (albeit a slow and not very good one), there was no boxer I liked less than Mayweather. At first it was his style, and that only got worse over time, but his arrogance and abuse of women only made my hate grow deeper. I would rather watch Arturo Gatti (RIP) and Mickey Ward be incredibly average but engage in real fights any day of the week.

I think what he means is that once a player goes there it usually means they end up leaving.

Jake will do all the right things. He'll talk to his coach, he'll get counsel from many others in his life and he'll get some solid analysis on his draft position. But in the end the lure of the ulitmate prize is too much for most kids to dismiss.

If it's even borderline that he could get drafted round 3 or sooner he's probably going to declare.

Right now I don't see him as a 1st round pick. He also is not an athletic freak which is important in the NFL. Butt does not have the highest ceiling which means the NFL would rather take somebody that they feel they can teach.

Exactly. I think he looks like a late 2nd round pick at best. I think he's a guy that teams can bring in with confidence, knowing that he can contribute. But he's not a star at the next level, because he's not athletic enough. He's a guy who can play for 10-15 years, but mostly as a #2 guy or a starter on mediocre teams.

I think he could improve his technique and effort when it comes to blocking. That's something that could help him get drafted a little higher and/or help him stay on a roster. So I don't think it's a slam-dunk decision to leave, but if I were him, I would certainly be considering it.

on Butt's athleticism.

Even so, staying another year won't transform him into a better athlete, right?

At best another year could make him a better route runner (already pretty good), learn more about recognizing defenses, finding holes in zone D, etc.

In other words, assuming you are right about his athleticism being the main factor pushing him down the draft board a bit, won't that be equally true 12 months from today also?
