Jaguars QB Job is Up for Grabs

Submitted by stephenrjking on

Following what was apparently a wretched preseason performance by Blake Bortles, Jaguars HC Doug Marrone has opened up the job.

Jaguars HC Doug Marrone said his team's starting QB job is up for grabs, waiting for Blake Bortles or Chad Henne to win it.

Many of us have spoken of how happy we are for Chad Henne that he has solidified a backup role late in his career. Looks like he has one last chance to be a starter. I hope he steps up and seizes it.

He was sharp with his throws (dropped passes inexcusable -but it's the Jags), good timing, right reads and experienced enough to deal with the shitstorm around him. And he looks more mobile than he did at 20 ...

Their next starting QB probably isn't even on the team. Bortles is awful, and while Henne isn't bad, he is what he is: a career backup. Neither are capable of leading that team to the playoffs, and even if Fournette is a revelation, he can't do it by himself.

After the Jags go 3-13 or 4-12 this season, I look for them to draft Darnold or Rosen next May.

Henne was a very good QB at Michigan, but one of the things holding him back in the NFL is his throwing motion.  There are also other issues as well that cropped up during his time at Michigan (locking in on receivers, accuracy issues, etc.) that appear to have continued in the NFL.

He has good arm-strength, but his throwing motion is way too long.  He brings the ball down to his hip during his windup.  It negates his arm-strength because it allows NFL defensive backs the time to break on his passes.  Bringing the ball down to his hip also causes his arm slot to be too low somtimes, resulting in a 3/4s delivery that causes his passes to sail on him (i.e. tacopants).  It doesn't help that he has generally played on mediocre to bad teams with mediocre to bad offensive lines his whole career.

I wish him all the best because he was a great Michigan Man, but unless there are many changes to his mechanics (which is unlikely this late in his career), I believe that he will struggle if he wins the starting job.

Good luck Henne!  Go Blue!

is the second worst starting QB in the league. Only Goff is worse. Even if he does end up starting the season for the Jags, he'll only last a few games at best.
