Ginn had a reason to celebrate. He returned the opening kickoff for a TD in a national championship game.

Tate is a mediocre player for a mediocre basketball team that is likely not going to the tournament. He should not be gloating or slapping anyone's floor.

Oh, come on. It was an incredibly close game, they had just given up an offensive rebound, and as the clear emotional leader of this team, the kid was trying to get his team focused. It wasn't gloating or celebrating and the kid is now out for the season and has to have surgery. I know he plays for a rival but at least get the facts right.

He should have been focused himself. Instead he had his head down not paying attention and let his man drive directly passed him. Smacking the floor like that is an attempt to show up the player you are guarding. His team would have been more fired up if he played good man defense instead of unleashing a Neil Peart drum solo on the court.

I'm not defending the floor slap. It was obviously dumb and it put him and his team in a bad position. But I absolutely disagree with you that all floor slapping is just an attempt to show up the guy you are guarding. Like I said, his team had just given up an offensive rebound and he was trying to motivate his team. The moment got the better of him and now he's out for the season. Had he just dunked on someone and slapped the floor, completely different story.

Ha, I have been out of the game for a long time... Maybe it is some reprehensible offense nowadays, I really don't know. It certainly doesn't seem all that harmful but apparently there is a history of it between MSU/UM so maybe I am just not as tuned into it. I know that Duke does it a lot and they also often get mocked for it.

The article linked in the OP says the shoulder had been bothering him but that the floor slap appeared to aggravate it. Here's longer video of the play, with the Big Ten commenter saying "he's not feeling great right now" right after it.

Tate injured the shoulder during February of his senior season at Pickerington Central and underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum, an injury he played through for more than a year. Tate’s father, Jermaine, said his son has been playing through a shoulder injury for a while.

Especially if it required surgery (I don't think all labral tears do), it had to be rather painful to play with that for a year, and then to re-aggravate it on something kind of, well, silly like showing the world your floor-slapping aplomb has to be a bit disenheartening.

Still, this is one of those time where, yeah, you couldn't hope to guess if you didn't know, if you will. He is definitely in that elite group that, when asked how they were injured or aggravated an injury, can simply show people the Vine of what happened.
