Jabrill Peppers makes history

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

There's only 26 of them. Even some Pro Football Hall of Famers aren't on this list.

Peppers was named to the AFCA First Team All-American team this morning. That's 5-for-5 in the official selectors.

That means he is the 26th Unanimous All-American in Michigan Football history.

Here's the short list-

1926 Bennie Oosterbaan E
1927 Bennie Oosterbaan E

Jourdan Lewis and Jake Butt also received First Team All-American honors from the AFCA while Kyle Kalis got on the Second Team.

Billy Price and Kyle Kalis both made the 1st and 2nd teams respectively ahead of Dan Feeney and Ryan Ramczyk. This is what happens when you let the coaches vote on things nationally--they will just vote for the most recognizable names. Most coaches don't know much about college football outside their own conference.

As much as we still discuss the way it went down in Columbus and being in the Orange Bowl as a result, having a consensus All-American and two pretty-damn-close-to-consensus All-Americans, forget conference and other honors for a moment? Yes, I think we can still point to that and say it was a nice year in many respects.

Getting 1st team on 3 of the 5 NCAA-recognized All-American teams automatically makes you a consensus All-American, but you can still get it depending on the distribution of the honors. Not official yet, but Jake Butt will probably share the consensus designation with Evan Engram as they both were named to 2 1st teams out of the 5. Butt made 2 2nd teams while Engram only made 1 2nd team, but I don't think the NCAA looks at the 2nd teams.

Besides being a great football player and athlete, Jabrill has demonstrated his capacity to understand the big picture.  After enduring (at a young age) the traumatic loss of his older brother and the imprisonment of his father, he has shown a developed understanding of the important things in life.

It is my opinion that he understands that securing his Michigan degree over the next year will better prepare him for the rest of his career and life than leaving for the NFL.  He can obtain an insurance policy to make sure he is financially protected in the event of injury.

Jabrill's greatest undeveloped asset is his leadership potential.  An early year in the NFL will not develop that potential as much as a year being the undeniable leader of a playoff-contending Michigan team.

Go Jabrill, Go Blue!  Make more history!
