It's Maryland week. Don't Punt to Will Likely

Submitted by sgwill on

I was talking to a friend of mine on Sunday, still on a post-drubbing high. We we both waaay too excited and optimistic about our changes against the State schools. But, hey, post-drubbing high.

But then he suggested we punt to one Mr. Likely this weekend, "just to show them how we're not afraid."

Ahem.

What happens when you punt to Will Likely?

Will Likely

Punting. When at or around Will Likely:

Likely Sadness

OH: "We're so good, we should just punt at that Will Likely Kid. We'll show him."

Do not. Punt. To. Will Likely.

Luckily O'niel has proven to be pretty darn accurate and the ability to hang the ball for his gunners to cover more ground. This will be a good test for our punt/kickoff coverage.

first time we punt, no matter what, hit him hard as hell. If he calls fair catch, hell, even before he catches the ball, hit him as hard as you can. The 15yd penalty is just a down payment on him freaking out every time after that. Don't hurt him, obviously. Just make him more concerned with taking the hit than catching the ball.

I am an engineer, and I know that punting to Will Likely is a bad idea. So much so that I will not be punting to will likely at my desk or while I perform field work.

I think Harbaugh will decide not to tempt fate or give the other team a chance to grab momentum by kicking to Likely.  He appears to be a bit more rational than Bo was.  Also, this is a road game.  You do everything you can to keep the crowd out of the game.  He has the right weapon in O'Neil to keep the ball away and I'm sure he will use it.

and I'm encouraged by the slow, steady progress the O has been making . . .

It's the special teams that are just night & day from the last few years.

The punting, the coverage, the blocking, etc.  it's all such a huge improvement that instead of costing us 1-2 games each year it could actually swing 1 or 2 our way.

Thats the most amazing improvement I've seen out of this team, and so I fear nothing when they take the field now.

Friends don't let friends punt to Will Likely. (28.1 ave, #1 in country, 2 TDs)

remember when Bo kicked to rocket just to show we were not afraid???

By the way Indiana has a very good punt returner as well - Mitchell Paige (20.0 ave, #8 in country) so don't kick to him either.   Janarion Grant at rutgers is pretty good too! Esp on kickoffs (33.5 ave, #7 in country + 2 TDs).  Don't kick to him.

Punting to Will Likely will likely result in bad things. He will likely get a big return (and give them unnecessary momentum) if this happens. He will likely be useless to them if we don't even give him the chance.

Our special teams will likely prove Will Likely to be a fraud. Well, likely they will, anyway, as over 70% of his return yardage was in the opener against Richmond, a team that will likely not scare anyone.

During the 2014 season, after the Minnesota debacle I cheered up because I thought things couldn't get worse. Then M went on the road and lost to Rutgers 26-24, and later at home against Maryland lost 23-16. Things definitely got worse.

At College Park this weekend M will avenge that loss. M by 4 TDs, 35-7, the Maryland 7 coming on a garbage-time TD.
