Isn't MSU always a team on the rise?

Great article for those of you who have Rivals... It is a Chait article and the Title Says most of it's point: MSU on the Rise Again (And Again, And Again...) This is something that I think is a great point and one that I hope our Basketball team sheds soon. It seems like everytime MSU goes 8-4 or hires a new hot shot coach - I hear all this hype as if they are on the cusp of something big. I mean what is on the rise for this program? Would it be a legitimate run at the Conference Championship? Starting 5-0 at some point? Be a preseason Nat. Championship "dark horse"? Thoughts? Hopefully our Basketball team is back on top for good. But Seriously it is as if MSU Football is a Phoenix that never fully rises from the ashes. Maybe they should make towels, "MSU, on the rise...AGAIN" http://michigan.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=995891

Chait FTW. MSU occasionally rises when they play UM or ND. They are rarely, if ever, taken seriuosly on a national level. Last year was their above average blip for any given decade. SOS is a moniker they've earned through 40 years of nothingness and it isn't a stereotype, it's a reality based in fact and a way of life in EL. 9-3, the pinnacle for a team on the rise...

I've never really understood why MSU is even considered a middle-of-the-road (or better) Big 10 team. Big 10 teams that have been to the Rose Bowl since last time MSU went (1988): 1) Michigan 2) OSU 3) Northwestern 4) Penn St. 5) Illinois 6) Purdue 7) Wisconsin 8) Iowa Yes, that leaves just Indiana and Minnesota as the only teams in the middle of a bigger drought than MSU. By the way, the last time MSU went to the Rose Bowl before 1988: 1966. They have 19 bowl appearances in total. This is less than mediocre. Sorry Sparty.

Every new coach seems to get one good year out of MSU, and they immediately think it is subsequently the norm instead of the aberration that it usually turns out to be. This year, they made the same mistake twice: once with their "rise" and once with UM's "fall." Apparently, they will never be very good at seeing patterns up in EL without the aid of hallucinogens.

While our Bball team is much improved and shows great promise we are nowhere near the top. We finished middle of the pack in the conference. Returning to the big dance was great and after 9-22 may have seemed like being on top, but we still have a ways to climb to be on top. JB has done a great job and is bringing in some impressive talent. Let him continue building the program and we'll get to the top we're not there yet.
