Isaiah Simmons offered

Submitted by wresler120 on

Isaiah Simmons, a 6'3 205 lb safety out of Olathe North, Kansas has seen his recruiting start to take off late in the game, and has landed a Michigan offer on the heels of his Clemson offer. Simmons, the 16th ranked saftey according to 247 composite, is an under the radar recruit that a lot of recruiting sites are starting to pick up on late in the game. its a wonder why its taken so long for him to garner big time offers after watching his film its easy to see that this kid could contribute on both sides of the ball, as he also plays WR for Olathe North. Below is a link to his highlight film, and if someone could embed that would be great.

I had another question in follow up to this offer and recruiting violations. I'll start by saying I follow twitter, because you get up to the minute information in terms on recruiting, but I would never tweet at a recruit. I happened to notice that when Simmons received his Clemson offer that he posted a tweet saying hes blessed to receive the offer, and that was followed up by a tweet from his offensive coordinator/gym teacher (John Hilton) replying and including Simmons and Hugh Freeze on a tweet saying "Coach Freeze you need to get in on this young man before Dabo signs him. #hottytoddy" And, upon Michigan's offer Simmons posted the same message stating he was thankful for the Michigan offer, which was again followed up by his offensive coordiantor/gym teacher replying to his post and including Hugh Freeze on it saying "Coach Freeze, now Jim has offered. Let's get this kid in an Ole Miss uniform!!! #landsharks.

I guess my question is would this fall under a booster interacting with a prospective student athlete, even if hes a coach on the team. Are coaches allowed to go to social media and tweet at college coaches publicly, including the student athlete on the tweet, and promote said school to offer in lieu of other offers coming in?

This seems pretty sketchy to me, but I figured others on this board would have more input regarding the rules in terms of coaches interacting with college coaches and recuits publicly through social media. I have never seen an instance like this occur before.

So you're saying he's helping him get recruited by focusing on one school, and basically showing all other coaches that he's focused on one school and one school only at Olathe North? I think your comment would make more sense if he said something like "Great job on getting that Michigan offer, other coaches better take notice and get your offers in soon before he's off the market." Not, screw you Clemson and Michigan lets get this guy to my daughters school Ole Miss, where I donate to the athletic department, and attend games regularly.

Here's a screenshot of the tweets sent out by his Offensive coordinator:

I guess this is a counter to the PSU/Sparty/Hill situation.

Don't know if others violated recruiting rules. If they did, nobody cares and NCAA will do nothing.

Regardless, I think it is sketchy as hell. Coaches should help their kids get all the info, sort through all the facts/fancy, and allow the athlete/family to make THEIR best decision. Most coaches do a great job with this. A close friend of mine is a HS coach with 4 2017 kids that are attracting a lot of attention, one of them getting offers from from about 15 power five schools, including a couple real powerhouses. His alma mater is in the mix, but he is not and will not attempt to sway one bit. (PS, Michigan has been communicating, but no offer yet) That coach mentioned by the OP seems like a first rate tool.

What if the kid asked him to get the attention of Ole Miss? I mean the kid id RT this stuff. If the kid said "Hey I would really like to hear from Ole Miss" then this makes sense and he is doing what is best for the kid.

Point is we don't know and you are assuming he isn't doing what is best for the kid. To me, getting the kid an offer from a major program is very helpful.

Wakeupnow is a pyramid scheme thing. Though ridiculous, it's possible he (2nd screenshot) came by that money through an "honest" job. As long as it's legal to have a job. However, he definitely would have been using his fame/status to recruit people to the scheme and make that money so maybe that's sketchy. Anyway his caption seems to say it wasn't bagmen.

Could be a good way for bagmen to funnel money though.

I'd imagine #hottytoddy has about as many tweets as #corblimey, #bringbackprohibition, and #rutherfordbhayes4president do. If he wants his kid to get into Ole Miss he needs to talk to the bagmen instead.

It's always possible the coach knows that the kid really likes ole miss and he's trying to get him some attention. Or it could be a joke of some sort. If Hugh Freeze needs randoms on Twitter to tell him who to recruit, he's got a huge problem.

Michigan will get theirs. I love getting all the highly ranked kids, but I do not worry about the ones that get away. JH will sign a quality class and coach em up.

still fall under the NCAA rules and regulations.I believe there are some instances wherein the players dad is a coach, and they still have to be careful, i.e. Tyrone Wheatley.

I may be wrong, but it seems there must be rules in place, because I have never seen something like this situation.

"Coach Freeze you need to get in on this young man before Dabo signs him. #hottytoddy."

"Coach Freeze, now Jim has offered. Let's get this kid in an Ole Miss uniform!!! #landsharks."

Translation:

"Coach Freeze, you need to have your bagman pay me the $100,000 you promised me if you expect me to deliver this kid to your doorstep like we agreed."

No, it's not a violation. Public or not, coaches spend time calling and contacting colleges to get their kids recruited. They don't just use Scout and 247 evals.

Kind of don't see the issue here...

If I understand this right. That's his OC on his high school team tweeting right? So then there is nothing out-of-pocket about their relationship. I understand everyone has an issue with the fact it is so public but I don't see anything wrong with it.

I don't see what the actions have to do with Ole Miss at all. It would appear they aren't showing the kid any attention.

As a mentor of three 2017 kids (1 top ranked with a Michigan offer, 2 others taking visits this summer) I can tell you this is how you get the attention of a school you want to go to. It just usaully is not this public. Kids use coaches, reporters, friends, whoever to tell a school "Hey I am interested".

If I am missing a point please help me understand.
