The Iron Jock

Submitted by Commie_High96 on
Harbaugh put Quinn Nordin on blast today in his weekly presser saying Nordin needs to “Strap on the Iron jock and just put it through the uprights.” This May be my favorite Harbaughism to date, though it is a little harsh. This was not in the MGoBlog coverage of the presser, but appeared in MLive, an internet new site normally dedicated to showing pictures of meth-heads from Bay City and photos of cosplay. http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2017/11/michigans_jim_harbaug…

"Get your shit together"!!  HAHA!!  I love that quote!  Harbaugh is awesome - his critiques are totally private, and what does get public is glossed over with a joke line.  BK gets purple faced, Jones bought Champion of Life rings, Pelini petted his cat...  We've got something to treasure here.

Dude is on scholarship to make kicks. He's gotta do it that's why coach wanted him here. Not too harsh at all in my opinion.

I don't think Harbaugh intended it as harshly as it comes across in print (disclaimer: I haven't listened to the presser audio to see if there's clarity in the tone of voice).

The phrase reminds me of his "put steel in your spine" comment, except a little more silly. I hear it as a lighthearted way of saying something serious regarding the need to eliminate distractions and doubts and move forward controlling what you can.

For all we know, Harbaugh has had a paternal conversation with Nordin using the expression as a memorable summary of the pep talk. To call this a brazen call-out and to compare Harbaugh to Kelly in this way is, I suggest, representative of a rather simplistic read of the situation.

field goals is not exactly what you would expect out of a cocky highly rated kicker.  Obviously it is a mental thing.  Sometimes those are the hardest things to fix.  I am not down on the kid unless he said something disrespectful on sideline to Harbaugh. If he said something fresh on sideline his bottom would sit.  Other than that, need to let him work it out.

Telling him to put on an "iron jock" is just another way of saying "toughen up" and make it.  If Nordin is going to put himself out there as a character, he better be ready to take some heat if things go a little sideways.

Pretty sure that they tried this in Super Troopers and it didn't work; all the guys got a laugh but the state outpost got shut down anyway.

Seriously, not sure how you kick with that contraption on.

Quinn is going to strap on that iron jock this week, and is going to win us a huge road game at Wisconsin. You heard it here first.

Upper 20's with wind gusts over 25 mph, yeah that would qualify as serious Iron Jock mentality.....

I heard the actual presser.  JH handle it very well, he open mocked the media for trying to make it more that it really was.  Yes, JH told Nordin he needs to make the next kick and Nordin's response was "Yeah, I got this!"  That is what was caught on camera.

Secertly, I am sure JH loved the response.  High confidence, need that in a kicker, but JH's statement of Iron Jock is you better back up that confidence on the field......

Its a fine line between confidence and cockiness......

Yes, JH seriously downplayed the whole exchange to the media stating several times that they (the media) was making waaaaaaaayyyyyy too much out of what was caught on camera....

So when you google "iron jock" the first five results are this article (including an MGoLink).

But what really fascinates me is that Number 6 is Amazon. Did somone at Amazon really think ahead to pay for the link (it's a blank page, basically). Did they spend on this just in case somone came to market with an iron jock? Did someone at corporate actually approve that? Or have they through their robots paid to link to just about any random set of words you can google?

I'm sure a lot of what he says to the media (who mostly annoy him) isn't necessarily what he says to the players face to face.  He knows Nordin has all the potential in the world.  But he's the starting kicker for a reason and needs to do his job.  He is still only a freshman.  He'll be alright.

I'm sure Qiuinn doesn't want to be associated with Charlie Sheen (or any character he's played) right about now.

Let's all hope Quinn can get through whatever issues he's having. The next two games could come down to his ability to put it through the uprights.

If you saw his post game remarks, I don't think he was pissed at all. He just wants to see the competitive fire in his players.  If anything, I would think he was glad Quinn got feisty - it shows he cares.

Harbaugh is a dude's dude.  He is using a sexually suggestive metaphor that is basically saying to Quinn, "get your dick hard and stick it ibetween those upright legs like a real man."  Another reason to love the guy.
