Iowa is sending its football coaches to satellite camp in Chicago

Submitted by iawolve on

The other thread on this topic focuses on SEC and Franklin seeming sketchy. However there are two items from the ESPN article that have not been highlighted. The first being that the Puntosaur is doing this in Lake Forest which is a northern suburb of Chicago and second that this topic has already made the rounds in Big Ten discussions.

"The Big Ten has discussed whether this should continue within the conference -- Iowa's coaches are heading to Chicago to work at Lake Forest College this summer -- but where’s the incentive to stop? Just working at these camps broadcasts your product to a large group of prospects (that you really want to impress) in a relatively foreign area."

The fact that this seems to be old news within the league (if the above is correct) and that guys like Ferentz are taking advantage of the rule, makes me change my opinion on the situation. Good for Franklin for getting after it, I guess my first impression was initially wrong about what he is doing. Secondly, WTF is our staff doing in this regard besides apparently nothing? Brady, what about one of these back in southern California? Mattison can't find a host college in Florida?

I definitely do not this staff to cheat or bend the rules. However, since we have not been tearing it up on the field the last few years, maybe it is time to take avantage of all options that are on the table like this one that is within the rules.

I'd think Nuss could get something going with his connections on the west coast as well as around Alabama. I know they like to get kids on campus and are very effective doing it but I'd think a mini family atmosphere thing at some of these satellite camps would help them convince more to check it out. With most of the quarterback offers going to west coasts guys so far, I'd love to see one out there to help sell these guys on checking things out.

is there any actual empirical evidence Iowa/Penn State (or any other school that will be/has been doing these satelitte camps) are getting "a positive ROI" out of it?

Both schools have large recrutiing budgets, of course, but they're still finite recruiting budgets and PSU/Iowa participating in these camps comes at the "opportunity cost" of NOT doing somethine else.

My gut is telling me this story is getting pretty over blown --- that it's not some tectonic shift in the college football world.  Guess we'll see.

This is Iowa's back yard. If they can't get a recruit to drive 3 hours for a camp or visit, they may not have a good chance at landing that recruit. At least PSU's approach makes sense regarding the financial aspects of getting the kid to fly in. Plus, PSU gets to see a bunch of kids in SEC territory all at once. Iowa's like: "oh yeh, I saw you last week on campus".
