Iowa game and DB recruiting

Submitted by MinorRage on
So w/ Woolfolk moving back to corner and GRob being able to play more press man coverage...do you think this will help us attract some top cornerbacks next year (class of 2011)? I don't know how much it will affect this years recruits, but I feel like that's a style of play that cornerbacks have to love. I would get much more excited seeing that and especially seeing guys like D Warren have a lot of success with it. Thoughts?

the depth chart is Woolfolk does a great job (remains to be seen) will be less wide open with presumably two entrenched starters. Warren will probably leave early though, still leaving at least one corner spot wide open.

For the class of 2011, I would say we are in a good position for Greg Brown. But, the D play will likely help. A lot of CBs like playing in aggressive schemes. However, don't forget about this year's class. We are still in a very good position for Cullen Christian and still have a good shot at Tony Grimes. Both of whom are top CB prospects With Avery and Talbot both hopefully staying committed. In terms of CBs on the roster. I wouldn't rule out Warren staying another year. Other good CBs like Marlin Jackson and Leon Hall stayed all four years. Hopefully Cissoko gets his act together as well. Last but certainly not least, Justin Turner will hopefully not burn a year of eligibility this year. CB looks good for us in the future.

As much as I would like to believe it, Warren won't stay next year, regardless of what our other great CB's have done. The reason for this is that the NFL is instituting some sort of salary cap after next year. Although Warren would likely move up a few spots, he would probably make much less money. Again, I hope this isn't the case, but it almost certainly is.

to see something very similar to the NHL's rookie limitations. IDK how it's done in the NBA, could be similar there as well. Short initial entry level contract, mandated at 3 years, I believe for someone drafted (different for UFA newbies) capped at about 2.5x league minimum for base salary with that much allowed again as bonus. I believe 1.8M/yr max is the NHL's entrylevel after watching the whole Fabian Brunnstrom ordeal a couple years ago. Was smashed the Wings didn't get him, but it looks like Leino, the Finn they picked up after they didn't get Brunnstrom is the real deal. And may be better anyway.

but i'm sure he and his advisors will do the math. if he moves from say a third round pick this coming year to a possible 2nd or late first round pick the following year, more $$ may be in it if he stays. just hard to predict now until more estimated cap $$ are presented. it would sure be nice if he stays.

I would rule out Warren staying another year. Especially if he continues having such a good year he could be a first or second rounder and with the new draft salaries taking effect after this year you will see a lot of underclassmen going. I'm more worried about the S and LB positions in the next coming years.

I don’t know how high you think Warren will go, but I think Syd’Quan Thompson, Joe Haden and Javier Arenas are more likely to go ahead of Warren. Even though the salary cap issue is a big reason I he might leave, I think he is 3rd rounder at best. He could shock us and stay because he might get more money if he stays another year and becomes a 1st rounder than leave early and become a 3rd or 4th rounder. But I dunno

is it sad i rather him go late first. I hate sending really good players to teams that are not going anywhere anytime soon. Like we really want the lions, rams or raiders to draft him

the resolution of Cissoko's indefinate suspension. I'm hoping Booboo gets his act together and delivers on his potential. But if not, there's a big chunk of PT available.
The Iowa game tape is also a huge "Help Wanted @ Safety" advertisement.

I think our academics, coaches, and facilities do a hell of a lot more for recruits than do some little schematic things like Kovacs blitzing frequently. I think having Greg Robinson is a big enough draw for recruits, but maybe I'm wrong.
