Invade BGSU Ice Arena!

Submitted by Helloheisman on

Just getting the word out...

But there seems to be a lot of tickets still available for the Mich/BGSU game Friday and Saturday. I will be heading down on saturday night. I know BGSU is the doormat of the CCHA but $20 after taxes and fees seems decent for center ice tickets if your in the area.

I plan on heading down from Ann Arbor both nights. Any ideas of where to grab some food? Preferably with easy parking. Also, is there a lot by the arena that we can park at? Any idea what corner that is on?

The hockey arena is at the corner of Mercer & Stadium Dr. There is a lot right infront of the arena that will cost you $10.

Regarding food, it's your typical college town. Your options are fast food which can be found along the main stretch (Wooster St) or pizza/sandwiches. Myles Pizza and Pollyeyes being the local favorites. You could also stop by Mr. Spots, which you may be familiar with.

As a BG alum I realize I may be a bit biased, but you must try Myles Pizza.  I bring one home with me anytime I get back up in that area.  They are loaded with toppings, and if you choose to go gallavanting around town after the game, they are open late.  I cannot stress enough how perfect Myles is after a full night of adult beverages.

If you choose the Polleye's route, get the stuffed breadsticks.  Dough is made fresh and they are made to order.

This concludes your tour of my way too unhealthy BG food joints.  Enjoy!!

I agree with the poster above, most of the places to eat are on Wooster and Main. Sam B's is a restaurant on Main that is really good but it's a little pricey. If you're looking for a bar, I would recommend Jed's. They give you a lot of food and it's not too expensive.

Hey there.  I meant to do this last night when I saw this but wasn't able to log in.

BG alum, worked at Myles.  If you haven't had it you MUST try it!  There are a couple of things to know about the weekend traffic.  It gets very busy and the wait can be a bit long after the game.  The place has not changed in 40 years, it's a trip!

The pies are fantastic and the most filling you will likely ever eat.  The dough is very heavy and if you get a Food Lovers the toppings are about as high as if you make the letter C with your hands...no joke.  They use an old oven, not a conveyor so the orders get backlogged and a Food Lovers takes about 1hr or more to actually bake :-]].  The cheese is so thick it is only considered done when it is slightly burned.....yummm.

The solution...place your order ahead of time and tell them when you want it done.  They will write the order pick up time on the tag and start it at the right time. Call at halftime or when you get to town.  Number is 419-352-1504.  Yes I still remember the number 20 years later.  If you call ahead, they will drop it in and have it ready for you to pick up when the game is over.  You just might have to eat it somewhere else if there aren't any tables!

If you get an XL (16") pie, and you are a big eater, you will likely be full after 2 pieces.  Try the 3rd, but it's a struggle.  Plan accordingly!  If you are ever traveling through town, you can get a "pre-bake" to go which means they cook it half way and you finish it at home.  Highly recommended.  The best news is I have never met a better leftover pizza than theirs.

Lastly, if you don't like pizza I have 2 other recommendations: their OPEN FACE garlic bread with cheese with ranch to dip in is fantastic.  They cut open a loaf of french bread through the middle and smother it with cheese and butter!  The other is, they make their subs on sub buns or the same french bread if you order it that way.  Have them toast it with the french bread, you won't be sorry.

Il be down saturday. Last time I was there I just bought the cheapest ticket and then you can go pick your seat. Very high school football like. The a bdubbs right down the main drag, also a Frickers across from the football stadium. My personal favorite is Jed's.

Can't make it out. Normally I would, but Saturday is Senior Night for the Basketball team.

Will be listening on the radio while having the bball game on mute on my TV.

Michigan will sweep this weekend I think. The thing we need is western to help us out again. If western sweeps ferris state, Michigan wins the CCHA. I need a new CCHA Champions t-shirt to replace this 2011 one I have.

Another absolutely huge weekend.

Pack the house and make it Yost South!

Getting my weekly dose of hockey before heading out of town for Spring Break (first-round bye is all but assured at this point, so have to get in what I can).

Been to BG a couple times in March for something non-sport related, and I've never discovered anything that wasn't a chain resturaunt unfortuantely. I'm sure there's something, but given I have to be up around 6 the next morning, sticking with fast food and non-alcoholic beverages is probably a better plan anyway.

As already mentioned, for pizza or stuffed bread sticks, Myles Pizza Pub & Pollyeyes (respectively) are awesome.  Lots of cheese.

There are several bars and clubs downtown on Main St for after the game, if you are of the 20-something partying crowd.

Myles Pizza Pub
516 E Wooster (head west from I-75 to the west edge of campus; just east of the railroad tracks)

Campus Pollyeyes  ( pollyeyes.com )
440 E Court St (along the west side of the railroad tracks, just one block north of Wooster)

Chain places all over the place at the exit from I75 onto Wooster St.

The BGSU Ice Arena isn't much to look at, but the sight lines are alright (you're never too far away from the action) and the low tin roof keep the noise levels high if there are fans their making noise.   The whole north end is general admission.

Lived in BG for the first 23 years.  If you have't been to Trotters, you're really missing out.  5-10 min drive from the Ice Arena.

All you need to get there is the Brown Jug.  Steak.  It's located downtown on the west side of Main St., just north of Wooster.  Tiny place, been there for as long as I remember (born in 73).

If you go to places like Jed's or SamBs, you're doing it wrong.  Also, avoid the places you will see after you exit I-75.

If you do want pizza, Myles or Pollyeyes are the places to go.

I know BGSU isn't much to look at, but we do have some really nice new buildings, including the Stroh Center, which is our gorgeous basketball/all-purpose arena.

FOOD: Other than that, avoid campus. Myle's Pizza and Campus Pollyeye's are the places to go if you want pizza. B-Dubbs is moving to another location, so it is closed for the moment, but Jed's is always good, and City Tap has pretty good food during the day. Corner Grill is on the corner of N. Main St and is a pretty delicious dive, with relatively cheap food. Their hours are great if you want to eat after the bars close.

BARS:  Most of the good bars are 21 and up with no cover charge. Reverend's(on Wooster and Main) and Brathaus(on Court, I believe) are pretty good places to start. Rev's has a lot of good beer choices, and Brathaus has the "liquid joint" which is a pretty delicious beverage that will get you drunk quickly. Everywhere else is alright depending on the night, but considering it is the weekend and it is a college town, I would steer clear of the bars on Wooster which will be full of kids running around being assholes.

Definitely pumped for the games this weekend. I should be at both games wearing Michigan stuff. I doubt it will sellout, but hopefully it is a pretty large and fun crowd. If anyone wants to try and meet up before, after, or during, let me know. I'll probably be there alone since all of my friends will be cheering for BGSU, unless I can convince my rugby teammate and Teddy Ruth's younger brother(of Notre Dame hockey fame) to tag along.

Extra: When BG hosted Notre Dame early in the season I saw Kris Draper sitting in the stands near the "press box" with a scouting clipboard. Since it is a smaller barn, there is a lot of transparency and these guys are out in the open. Definitely keep your eyes peeled for guys like him if you want an autograph or something. He was very friendly. It might be a longshot that any former players-turned-scouts are in attendance, but rumor has it that the Wings would potentially take PDG in the draft, so you never know.

Hands down, Myle's Pizza. The cheese and toppings are laid on thick, so you are getting a lot for your money. Not quite as good as my childhood favorite Thano's Lamplighter in Ann Arbor, but I enjoy Myle's a lot. Campus Polleye's is more known for their stuffed breadsticks which are delicious, but Myle's is a better restaurant if you want to sit down, enjoy a beer, and have a thick cut of pie.

I will be bringing my 3 yr old son Firday night.  My buddy is the arena announcer for BGSU, so he always gets me in.  And I like this game since I grad from BGSU.

Food

I always liked the two mexican places on Wooster right across from Campus/Stroh Center.  I would also bet you could park there and walk over the arena.  Jimmy Johns is right there also if you are in a rush.

Pagalais out on main has an awesome pizza buffet.  Take 75S to Rte 6, head west, then get off on Rte 25, Pagalais is on the right.  To get to rink from there turn right onto main, then left onto Wooster. And left again at Stroh center.

Parking

I park at the Music center in the commuter lot (turn left at little street in front of ice arena, before you get to the Rec).  You run the risk of a $25 ticket, but I only get one about 10% of the time.  Up to you what your risk tolerance is.
