I thought he looked competent when he played for Illinois.  He can sling it around the field.  Other than that, I'm not sure why this is happening.  Perhaps a change in the QB depth to come out later?

Gutierrez was stuck behind Chad Henne here at Michigan, and transferred to Idaho State to get some playing time. He never was at USC.

Besides Matt Cassel, Brad Johnson is the only QB I know of who didn't start in college but had a long pro career. Johnson was stuck behind Peter Tom Willis and Casey Weldon at Florida State in the early 90s.

That has to be what he is hoping. Honestly I can't see him being any higher then 4th on the depth chart this year and then maybe 2nd or 3rd the following year depending on who comes back.

I don't ever seeing him playing significant time. Hopefully he's also looking at the value of a UM graduate degree with this decision. Strange move by him, if he wants to play though.

I honestly checked the date of each of those links to make sure they weren't posted in April 1st.

The only scenario making sense here might be that Coach Harbaugh wanted a more experienced backup QB in case of injury.

By the way, JH personally escorted Jeff George Jr. around campus last week. Obviously, he knows his Father well. We will have to see how all the attrition/additions work out on scholarship numbers. Jim commented on his podcast something to this effect:

"Several scholarship players are currently not listed as among the top 110 roster players who will be allowed to practice with the team in August."

Does that mean we are at 84 or a little lower?

P.S. Maybe somebody can dig up the exact quote.

I listened to the podcast yesterday while at work and I stopped what I was doing when I heard that. Quite interesting to see what the roster looks like/ who is and isn't practicing come August. Also seemed to sound like the team is going to be mostly walk ons if you only listened to that one podcast and knew nothing else about the team.

I don't know I kind of agree with Sam Webb. He'll come on as a walk-on and be a solid scout team QB. Also, this will be added bonus of networking if he's trying to get into coaching. Michigan is a great place to start a coaching career after your playing days and being even a tiny part of the Harbaugh circle is huge.

People need to calm down on this board. No Sophomore/Freshman is leaving because a grad transfer comes in.

Aren't you being a little dramatic? "People need to calm down". Who's over excited?  Jeff George Jr is not very good, and nothing has been confirmed on whether this is a walk on, and unless someone is leaving or Peters and McCaffrey suck, this is not a very good use of a scholarship for the next 2 yrs. He should be able to develop anyone on the roster to play to Jeff George Jr's capabilities.

LOL i'm being dramatic? The first comment on this thread is (just looked; it's you) someone asking if this means Peters is transferring. And I wasn't just talking about this thread, any time QB is brought up or qb competition is brought up everyone questions who is transferring. When Shea came in it was because someone was transferring or they will be now.

So yes, i stand by what i said, people need to calm down.

Wasn't Jeff George Jr. a walk-on at Illinois?  I seem to recall from the 2016 game this was brought up multiple times and that it was his first start, and he was only starting due to injury.  I didn't follow Illinois last year because 1.) they weren't on the schedule and 2.) they blend in with the rest of the terrible B1G west so I'm not sure if he got a scholarship at some point.

If he is actually a PWO this thread will go down as a massive overreaction.

There was an article about this on mlive:

http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2018/06/race_to_make_michigan_football.html#incart_river_index

"Who the best players are," Harbaugh said on the podcast. "And there already is scholarship players who aren't in the 110, and there's walk-ons -- preferred walk-ons -- who are in the 110. "And there are tryout guys who made it that way that are in the 110."

Great.  Now I have to get caught up on the Harbaugh family (Harbaumily?) podcast.  You know, all these one-line updates you give us are great information.  But they are sometimes incomplete, and therefore frustrating!!!

(I get that you can't do a verbal vomit of everything you know - and please don't jeopardize your standing!)

Sorry brother, sometimes there isn't a whole lot more to give. I honestly didn't want to dig through that podcast again for the quotes. Most important piece of the puzzle is attrition. Sure, two have departures been announced without names from UM. Yet, the numbers don't add up. So, it is something for the fan base to follow.

Th QB Guru's first "guy" is McCaffrey, who is a redshirt freshman. Patterson is an experienced gap filler, who Harbaugh would have liked to picked in 2015.

I know many teams play first and second year QBs, but I am betting most are simpler offenses with less post snap reads. Thus, so far experience and maturity has beaten out talent. When talent and maturity align is when we'll see Guru results. ASSUMING we have a competent O-Line.
