I won't be wearing my customized Michigan jersey this Saturday for the first time this season

Submitted by samsoccer7 on

I'm scared. I won't be wearing my customized (my last name, groomsmen gift) Michigan football jersey this Saturday for the first time this season. I felt bad enough this past weekend when I forgot to wear my Block M t-shirt UNDERNEATH my jersey that I wore for UConn and ND, and we almost lost. Needless to say, this has become a mild superstition for me this season.

What are your superstitions on gameday? What lengths have you gone to ensure yours aren't broken?

This year I have worn the 2008 schedule shirt under my jersey (the shade of maize matches from undershirt to number on the jersey well), but last week I wore 2009 schedule shirt instead so I wont make that same mistake again.

This reminds me of another rant of mine: we need to go back to putting our program's accomplishments on the back of the student shirt (as we did in 2003 and '04). Any school can put the season schedule on it. Only we can brag about being #1 in wins, #1 in win percentage, #1 in conference titles...

This has been a pet peeve of mine as well. The trouble with the schedule shirt for me is that, unless you have a perfect season, at least one of those games will bring up some bad memories. The '07 shirt, for example, is a really nice shirt, and I would like to wear it, but it has certain items on it that just make me too sad when I see them. A listing of all our awesome accomplishments & records, however, is never a cause for sadness!

....when we first got season tix, the first game we bought the program (the Horror); the second game we bought the program (Oregon). Then we stopped Buying the Program.

Friends don't let friends buy programs.

I went the whole 1997 football season without a hair cut and wore the same t-shirt to all the games. Even for the OSU game, I had it under my coat. By time Thanksgiving rolled around, I was rockin' a tight 'fro.

I'm breaking in a new shirt for the BG game, I'm wearing it to the stadium, weather permitting, under my Nike UM windbreaker. My biggest superstition is I never listen to the game on the radio before I watch in on TV, say if I'm running late to get home to watch it. Bad Ju Ju.

2006 Michigan Student shirt. Best year we had when I was at school, so I figure there has to be something good about it. The 2007 version is at the VERY VERY bottom of my storage.

The day before gameday, I wear my maize block M shirt. Then gameday, I wake up, put on my blue michigan shirt, and ride around blaring "the victors" on my cars system. I eat a pre-game meal of brats and potato. Then my brother comes over and we watch Denard dismantle the other team... But I'm not superstitious or anything...

In 1996, I wore a Michigan flag as a cape to some games, not to others. When I wore it, Michigan won. When I didn't, Michigan lost. Wore it during every game in '97. Then I retired it.

I received a #32 jersey (Anthony Thomas) before the '98 season, and I would wear it on all gamedays (home or away). I stopped when the Maize-out tradition began, and now wear a maize shirt to all home games. We did, however, have a pretty good record when I wore that jersey, though, so for the ND game, since it wasn't at home, I put it on. It had enough juice left in it to deliver a win in South Bend. I'll wear it when I'm watching our other road games.

My daughter was born in 2007 and her first game was The Horror which jinxed my good luck jersey.

I fixed this problem by having a baby boy this April. We are undefeated since his arrival and so I think we'll keep him

Meanwhile my jersey and any old superstitions went out the door with Bo and coach Carr.

I wear a white undershit with my authentic Charles Woodson '97 throwback and either shorts or jeans.

I live in San Diego so I don't really have to deviate from this due to weather situations.

I've mellowed out only slightly over the years, but my wife almost refuses to watch Michigan games with me because I'm convinced that depending on where she sits in the room, the outcome of the game can swing wildly. If we score a touchdown, "don't move, that seat's good luck for us." The D gets gashed...."wait, did you move?!?"

Yes, I can be a pain in the ass on football Saturdays. I continue to make progress and even had neighbors over to watch the UConn game this year.

A good friend and fellow UM grad is worse. In '97 he showed up to watch the first game at a friend's house. His friend was late getting back from the grocery store, so my friend broke in through a basement window to avoid missing the kickoff. Obviously Michigan won that game. For the rest of the year he went to that guy's house to watch the games and insisted on climbing through the basement window.

I just searched and found a Game Day Traditions thread. If there's not already a separate Superstitions thread, someone should create one.

Great stories. Based on the outcome of the game, I take it none of your neighbors moved during the UConn game. I think they might have to start coming over to your house every game once Big Ten play starts.

Your friend's story is awesome. I only wish that he insisted on breaking the basement window again each Saturday. That would be epic dedication.

Hey guys I know it doesn't really relate to the thread, but as of now I've decided I want to get the #16 jersey. Only one thing, the lack of a name will bug me to no end. Is there any good place to buy jerseys? I saw some at JC Penneys, and I have heard of others at TJ Maxx.

Any ideas? I looked on eBay and saw some authentic (?) 16 jerseys but they were really high priced, like in the $200s.

I've started up a fresh batch of traditions since this year started. Broke alot of them last week since it was only UMass, but they are coming back this week.

They start early in the morning when my friend comes over to play the game on NCAA '11, always making sure M wins of course. Student section shirt every Saturday, although I wear it under my #2 away jersey during away games and will wear it under my maize sweatshirt/coat in the winter months. The shirt doesn't get washed until the team loses. At the game my friend pulls out his wolverine stuffed animal and everyone gives it a quick pet for good luck. When the band comes out we sing Varsity, although no one within 30 rows of us ever seems to join. Mr Spots on the way back after the game is a must as well.

I wear my M basketball shorts, circa 2000 that have a giant whole in the crotch (as opposed to the pair that had the waist ripped up and the string no longer in the waist). With this i throw on my M polo shirt and M baseball cap. I then sit on my couch in the same position each week.

I also yell at my wife if she moves and the game flow starts to turn towards the opponents favor. BTW, against Umass i did NONE of these things as I was as over confident and under prepared as the actual team. I promise it will not happen again.

I just have to figure out what i am going to do when i go to the Iowa game in October, shorts with hole in crotch does not sound like a good idea. Though the shirt and hat will be present.

but I wont wear my Howard jersey. Its been bad luck so far. Ive been wearing the same Adidas hooded sweatshirt this year and will continue to wear it. I altered my wardrobe last week by wearing my Adidas track jacket, needless to say thats not worn on saturdays anymore. The track jacket has been good luck for basketball though.

I've continued the rock the Michigan Mustache even after the UConn game. Totally forgot to shave it back down to just the stash this last weekend though, so I take full responsibility for the UMass scare. It won't happen again.

Assume the position. Much like the guy who tells his wife where to sit, I believe locational geometrics are crucial. Last year during the Notre Dame game when we fell behind, I assumed a very terrified I-can't-do-anything-except-lay-on-the-ground-on-top-of-a-pillow stance. Worked like a charm. I repeated it to much success this year.

That is some highly situational down-to-Notre-Dame-late juju. Mostly I'm comfortable in my Calvin Klein Classic ripoff style "Michigan Classic" grey T-shirt, made for one year only for the Michigan Classic Debate Camp. Much like Seinfeld's Wonderboy, though, its structural integrity is declining. Time to pony up for a hyperbaric T-shirt chamber.

So far, Michigan #5 and the Scoreboard Maize shirt underneath. Havent been washed, starting to get funky, but I only wear it for the game. Smells like beer and sweat, a fantastic mix...

why do words always follow this phrase?

And, I do not care wut you wear to the game. No one else cares either. Call your mother, she may still give a fawk about whatever it is you do do. (i said do do)

superstious, however i really enjoy wearing an old michigan football shirt with a big block 'M' on the back. it is torn and tattered and faded but comfortable and i wore to the Big House the day we beat the bucknuts to go the rose bowl and win it for the national championship!
