I'm Rooting for Shane

Submitted by fortissimosca on

Since it appears to be a two horse race now and there doesn't seem to be a lot of people in the Team Morris camp, I thought I would throw my support in for a few reasons:

1. Seeing Shane succeed would be the cherry on top of the Bursley Soft Serve Ice Cream on a Waffle Sundae demonstrating the ineptitude of the previous regime.  Concussion gate was the boiling point for the last administration, and I want to see Harbaugh take the centerpiece from that and turn him into a champion.

2. I want to see the hometown metro Detroit kid who "just wants to play" recover from one of the worst moments in U of M history and take us to a National Championship (Big 10 Championship?...bowl game?........beating Rutgers?)

3. I'm concerned about Rudock losing his job at Iowa, whose playbook is about as simple as a corn farmer's tinder account.  Harbaugh's QB turnarounds have been attributed to simplified reads allowing the passer to make quicker/better decisions.  Rudock was superseded in a similar environment while Morris hasn't been in that environment.

I know I am rooting for the underdog.  Neg away if you must.

edit: I apologize for the addition of the cup size to Rudock's name

I mean the Darboh play wasn't even automatically reviewed, in this age of reviewing everything.

Also, I believe time was run off illegally from a false start at the end.

I am not part of the group of people that say well it shouldn't have come to that or we didn't deserve to win anyway.

There are plenty of games where teams survive at the end and escape with a win which they supposedly didn't deserve.  It happens every damn week in football.

I assumed that having the ball in your hands and taking multiple steps was a catch.   We likely win if we get a catch called a catch.

I hear what you're saying and 99% of the time, I feel the same way. Just because your team plays horribly is no excuse not to be angry when the refs f*ck you over.

And yes, the refs did f*ck us over. That was a catch by Darboh and we should have had a first down. But I was already beyond disgusted by that point. The defense giving up 400+ yards to Gary Nova was a disgrace. For over three hours, our team made Rutgers players look like grade school kids on the last day of school. They were literally skipping and prancing to the sidelines every time they stopped our offense. It was a travesty beyond belief.

If the correct call is made and we win it with a field goal, I basically feel the same as I did when we beat Illinois in 2010 and Northwestern the last two years. Embarrassed over how futile my team looks.

Since I've lived in the NE for most of my life I've been relegated to watching UM in person at PSU. Prior to my adult life UM seemed to beat PSU every year. As soon as I started going to games they started losing to PSU. So I went to the UCONN game, which UM won, but barely. Then last year at Rutgers. Boy, was that a disappointment. We gave up so many big passing plays and 3rd and longs. It was depressing. Rutgers was not good and UM was worse. Boy do I look forward to the days when the Rutgers, Minnesotas, and Utahs of the world are penciled in Ws.

But not for any of your reasons. Here are mine.

1. You don't bring in a 5th year guy not to start.

2. Said 5th year guy is the safest option for you to win. We would go wild over a 9-3 season where our defense looked awesome and the offense looked competent, just lacking in some small areas.

3. If Morris is able to supplant and guy with 2 years more experience, a boatload more starts, and infinitely more TDs, he is going to deserve it.

I am all for Rudock starting. He is known. He is good. And he won't turn the ball over. Shane starting takes us from 8-4, 9-3 to 10-2, 11-1, because it means he beat out a QB with a very high floor. And Harbaugh is only going to start Shane if Morris' floor is equal to Rudock's.

Unless Ruddock is the insurance policy to protect against the downside risk.

Also, is it possible Ruddock is designed to keep a fire under Morris?  So Ruddock is reliable insurance policy against bad QB play, and serves as pace guy / competition for Morris.  If Morris hits his potential then great ... go with Morris.  If Morris doesn't click, then there's Ruddock.

I'm just musing ... I honestly don't have a clue.

Nobody should be rooting against Shane, by all accounts he's a great young man. The op seems to be writing in response to the large and vocal crowd on mgoblog that keeps repeating: anybody but Shane. I think its silly to write him off like that, especially in light of how generally bad most of our previous staff was at the whole coaching football thing, and how overwhelmingly great our new staff is in that same respect.

I hope they're both competent.  QBs can get knicked up.  We'll have more of a short passing game set up by a solid running game.  If one protects the ball significantly better than the other, there's your starter for the season (profound revelation, eh?).  But that's hard to gauge outside of game play.  Hopefully, Harbaugh makes the right decision in this respect for the Utah start, as having to switch QBs for this reason would not bode well for a W.

Rudock was not a turnover machine at Iowa.  Jury's still out on Shane, and I think that's the primary concern of our TO-weary fanbase.

I think with everyone talking about how the floor for Rudock is so much higher, I would be very happy if Shane wins the job. If Shane wins the job that most likely means he has progressed to a point where he is more valuable than Rudock has been thus far in his career. That excites me given Morris's upside.

I look at it as Rudock is the floor. We know what we have. It's a new system and Harbaugh could raise the bar some but I don't look for much more than what he's done in the past. This is fine.

If Shane starts, it means he has raised the bar and will continue to develop and improve over the course of the season. I think it also means good things for the competition next year. We will have an even higher floor and Morris, OKorn and Gentry will all likely be taking steps forward.

I think if it's relatively even, Shane gets the nod because he will continue to improve.

For the life of me I can't understand why anyone would root for one particular player over another, barring some incredible extenuating circumstances.  "Rudock failed in the past" is an especially lousy reason.
