How did UM miss on Devontae Dobbs?

...And Julian Barnett, for that matter?

I'm psyched about Trente Jones, but given our glaring need for ready-to-play OL recruits, it seems like Dobbs would be THE priority in this class. 247 lists Drevno as his primary recruiter. Was that the problem? What gives?

They're individuals that are making life decisions for themselves and not just football. More things factor into where kids go than just it being a position of need here.

There is almost no such thing as "ready-to-play" OL recruits. Or let's put it this way: they're few and far between. I don't care how good they were in high school, it's not the same thing as college.

OL is just one of those positions where I feel like a kid needs to be in a college weight room for at least one full year before he's ready to play at this level. How often do you see an offensive linemen come in, play as a true freshman and the reason isn't related to serious depth concerns or performance issues from other players?

Here, let me summarize this for you.

He felt Michigan didn’t give him the attention he wanted. Not everyone who grows up in Michigan wants to go to Michigan. There are in fact elite recruits who are MSU fans and have spent their entire aware lives watching MSU bear ya. Another example is Logan Brown, who grew up a Wisconsin fan, so he committed to Wisconsin.

Dobbs is also 6’4”. When you talk about college ready OTs, he’s on the very short side. Many project him to play inside on the OL due to his height.
