How can we make The Big House a more intimidating place to play?

Submitted by robbyt003 on

I don't feel like The Big House really gives us that home field advantage like it should.  What do you think Michigan should do to change that (besides the obvious like have a better OL or QB)?

Do you put in more stadium suites to help hold in the sound?  Do you kick out all of the fans that say "down in front"?  Expand the student section?

This is ridiculous. The crowd noise, or "intimidation" factor, had NOTHING to do with why we lost.

Stop turning the ball over 5 times. The reason Michigan lost this game was because of horrible offensive execution and not because the crowd did or did not have towels or Pom-pom's. Hey, let's get a wave going, that should be good for at least a touchdown per game. It's the same stadium that was home to some very impressive football teams in the 80's, 90's, and early 2000's. Hell, I'll bet the crowd is better today than it was 20 years ago.

Intimidation isn't really a thing. In fact I loved playing away as an athlete, going to knew stadiums and having people hate you gives you confidence and can cause teams to rally around themselves more.

This team just lacks toughness and Michigan football hasnt been tough in a long time. The fans were amazing and they still lost. This is a soft bunch especially on the offense

Look no further than the teams Beilein has trotted out. Toughness goes a long way

Somehow buy a critical amount of tickets in the first few rows of each section and give them to an organized, zealous group of fans who will stand the entire time the defense is on the field and scream. Enough people do it at the bottom, the whole section usually stands and screams.

ITT: People who misinterperate the question as "we lost because it's quiet"

I've always thought overhangs at the top of the stadium would be feasible, but I'm not an architect. I do get tired of hearing "It's not the loudest stadium in the country even though it's the biggest..." by everyone calling every game.

114,000 people SHOULD be way way louder and intimidating but nothing seems to change or get better as far as the crowd noise goes

The split-stadium "Go! Blue!" chant seemed louder when I was attending games in the late 90's. Especially the Bluuue part. That could be because I was lower in the bowl and in the student section, where as recently I've been in the upper part of the bowl. Regardless, I have always liked that traditional chant, and I have two suggestions that I think would dramatically improve it: 1. Split the stadium east/west instead of north/south 2. Make it a three part chant: a. East - "Let's!" b. West - "Go!" c. Full - "Blue!"

One giant flame thrower going from the flag pole and goal posts across the field to the other goal posts. That will clear the field. However, I still miss the dog, who used to push the soccer ball across the field during halftime.

Some energizing music and some pom poms at the very least.  What happened to playing Sandstorm by Darude?  That to me is one of the best for a college football game.  I remember they played it at the first Under the Lights at ND and it was a terrific energizer.  SANDSTORM.

And losing to lesser teams.  We used to dominate lesser teams and always showed up against better competition.  The past few years or so, there hasn't been much home field advantage.  This is freakin Michigan!!!

Put “The 12th Man” in big, 6’ high maize letters across the face of both luxury box facades - that alone will make opponents feel they’re at a disadvantage. And stop calling it “The Big House”, call it something more intimidating like “Alcatraz” or “San Quentin” or “Death Valley” or “Death Valley North”. Oh, and play that riff from “Seven Nation Army” over the PA system at every possible opportunity, but louder than anywhere else. Maybe even make that the fight song so when our team plays somewhere else, they’ll thin “Gee that’s nice that they play our fight song so much everywhere we go!”

1. Sell booze at the games

2. Sell cowbells or some other defeaning prop that makes noise

3. Like foreign football, have dedicated hype men/women in sections to get the crowd into it. (In some places, if you dont cheer, they toss you)

4. Another idea from soccer...more chants and sing-alongs.

5. MORE BAND!

In the B1G:

  1. Iowa
  2. Illinois
  3. Penn State
  4. Minnesota
  5. Northwestern
  6. Nebraska
  7. Wisconsin
  8. Rutgers
  9. Indiana
  10. Michigan State
  11. Purdue
  12. Michigan
  13. Maryland
  14. Ohio State

Iowa I would have guessed. The rest of it I can't explain; it certainly doesn't seem to correlate to crowd noise or intimidation level. Ohio State has barely even had an HFA the last few years; they've only lost one true road game in 5 1/2 seasons.

The really strange thing is that 12 of the top 13 in all of FBS are the Pac 12 teams.
