How can we make The Big House a more intimidating place to play?

Submitted by robbyt003 on

I don't feel like The Big House really gives us that home field advantage like it should.  What do you think Michigan should do to change that (besides the obvious like have a better OL or QB)?

Do you put in more stadium suites to help hold in the sound?  Do you kick out all of the fans that say "down in front"?  Expand the student section?

the D was on their heels a bit in the 1st half ,which might have been a bit of their inexperience showing.. but talk about 2nd half adjustments.  He deserves a bonus for that one.

I'm in row 17 and thought it was pretty loud Saturday, I would like to see the fans get into it a little more on 1st and 2nd downs rather than wait until 3rd. But as far as the stadium maybe a overhang over the suites, that would direct the sound down and I would like to see the ends closed in either with suites or an upper deck

Remove all the whiners from the fan base. Can't even attend a night game without these softies worrying about their safety. You think the big house is going to be intimidating with these old farts still around?

Losing sucked, but our fanbase in the stadium could use some work. Just because the drunked up crowd was "raucous" doesn't mean it helps the team win. SHUT UP when we are on offense. Multiple times the offensive huddle had to motion the crowd to quiet with little success. Go nuts on defense, cheer during the play, but knock it off when we are in the huddle or at the line. STOP booing the team. Do we all wish the team had played better? Of course. Does booing someone magically make them better? No. The booing and negativity actively crush the atmosphere. It's not like O'Korn purposefully had the ball slip out of his hand when asked to throw in a monsoon. Booing creates more tension for a player and hinders performance. TRADITIONS and cohesiveness in the stadium are weak at best. Coordinated fan bases with on-going traditions create environments that are positive for the home team and negative for the opponent (ie why Yost was consistently ranked the toughest place to play in hockey). Our fanbase struggles with even simple things. About the only time everyone seems on the same page is when the Slippery Rock score gets announced. Starting the wave on offense is foolish. When the kicker boots it over the netting don't let the usher confiscate it, throw that ball up and out of the stadium. Play temptation after all defensive stops, not Iron Man or other wacky tunes. Singing/playing living on a prayer when losing is also not cool. Also, for the love of God, don't sell your tickets to an opposing fan just so you can make a few extra bucks. Pay it forward to a fellow UM fan and cut them and everyone else a break.

I brought this up Saturday night and I'm not gonna let it go. I got told to SIT DOWN in the 4th quarter. It's a night game against a rival and we are down by 4. Section 39 sucks. The entire stadium was on its feet for the whole 4th quarter except for one. If anybody wants to trade seats with me I'm open to anything. Next hear I'll be transferring for sure .

I normally sit in section 6 when I go, I've been told to "sit down" more times than I can count. Anytime I'm at a Michigan game it always lacks energy. My boss gets OSU season tickets every year and give them out to employees, everytime I've been to a game, it doesn't matter who they play the shoe is electric. It gives them a huge advantage.

I'm curious, do you usually acquiesce when they ask you to sit? I looked at the guy and said "we are the only section in the whole stadium that's sitting" and he shrugged his shoulders. I thought about standing my ground and ignoring him but I didn't want to have a problem. I'm just wondering how others usually deal with it.

I've only gotten into an argument with one guy before. It was my first game at the big house. I stood up to fix my rain coat and a older man behind me told me to sit down, not wanting to make a scene I apologized and sat down. When Dennis Nortfleet returned a punt for a TD (it got called back) he got rude again. This time he said "I've already ask you once to sit down I won't ask nicely again." At this point I turned around and said "Go fuck yourself I paid my money like everybody else I'll stand if I want." He didn't bother me the rest of the game. Normally I wouldn't say those things but he was an outright prick the entire game to me and my sister.

That was Hokes last year, it took me 6 hours to get to AA due to an ice storm. I was 21ish at the time. Now that I'm older I would respound the same way. It's just so crazy to me, I've been to MAC games with more passion from the fans than what we get in AA.

Whether or not to acquiesce, that's tricky.  If everyone in your immediate area is seated I don't know how you can be standing if someone asks you to sit.  You could be humorous and yell for everyone else to stand up.

Try for Section 43.    You can stand all you want for the most part.  Please do not bring any Sparty friends and/or family members.  Little too much of that on Saturday.

So I'm supposed to sit and stare at the guy in front of me's ass because the lady behind me is short?

No.  If the people in front of me are standing, I'm standing.  I'm glad to sit down granted I can see the play, but I'm not being discourteous by standing if the people in front of me are.

I'm in section 14 just above the walkway. Below that everyone stands on big defensive plays. I was shocked how many times on Saturday I would look to either side or behind we would be the only ones standing on third down stands in the 4th quarter. It seems there are a lot of passed down season tickets that people keep cuz their parents or grand parents has them, but they don't have any/much passion

Each fan entering the stadium is issued a shock collar. If their yelling and screaming falls below a certain decibel level, they're given a nice jolt in the neck.

Have more night games. I have been going down to games since 94. The 4 night games are probably in the top 5 in regards to the loudest I have heard the stadium. The beloved noon games have the atmosphere of a morgue.

Every crowd reacts to momentum.  They start the game loud and as good things happen they get louder, bad they get get quieter. That's why the phrase "silence the crowd" or its derivatives exist.

Michigan stole its own momentum throughout the entire game Saturday.  The errors took the crowd out of the game: at any point the crowd started to come back in, there was another error.  Evenly spaced throughout the entire game.  The crowd noise was fine given this.

If Isaac doesn't fumble, breaks off a good run, and Michigan takes it down the field for even a FG, the noise on Sparty's next posession would have been deafening.  That's it.  There's no problem with the crowd.

You must not have been at the game.  Crowd noise was a huge advantage Saturday, demonstrated by MSU penalties.

There were a few times, particularly in the 2nd quarter, when there was a lull in fan participation. The lulls came after the team screwed up.

But overall, the crowd was very good.  Sure, there's always some people that won't stand, make noise, whatever.  But, it was VERY loud from Section 6.  Louder than any game I've been to at Notre Dame or MSU (which were Michigan road games).  It also seemed louder than the Lions game Sunday.
