Houston Cougars Schedule
Some polls have Houston ranked above Michigan. How are suppose to pass them with this pathetic schedule?
9/10 Lamar
9/15 @ Cinci
9/24 TX St.
9/29 UConn
10/8 @ Navy
10/15 Tulsa
10/22 @SMU
10/29 UCF
11/12 Tulane
11/17 Lvlle
11/25 @Memphis
I'd feel a lot better if they added Cass Tech.

we'll jump them. Heck we may still jump them with a stumble. If that happens, Houston will have all the more reason and motivation to get into the big 12.

The Committee will take SOS into account.
But if they take care of business, OU and Lousiville have good years, and the AAC has mutliple strong teams like they did last year, then Houston will have an argument over a two loss Power 5 conference champ.
I have to admit I find Big Ten fans bitching about what they consider to be other team's weak schedules and then bitching about the SEC's "Big Boy football" attitude to be hilarious. If it's annoying when other conference fans do it to us, then it's annoying when we do it to others.

Well if you're worried a team passed us because they had a more impressive win in a given week, the fact that their schedule is garbage should be encouraging. Louisville may be the only game left that even holds a candle to any one of Penn State, Wisconsin, @MSU, @Iowa, and @OSU. We have several chances to pass them, and in the Playoff era, worrying about any single team is very silly.

If we win out, we will have a better Resume than they do!
September 7th, 2016 at 5:07 PM ^
It still surprises me how many people are attached to the old polls model where teams never dropped positions unless they lost or looked awful against a bad team, when we have two years of evidence from the committees conclusively demonstrating that the poll habits are no longer a factor.
The committee can and will drop a team that wins if another team behind them gets a better win that burnishes its resume. They actively reassess and compare each team, including their entire resumes, each week.
The first year is a good example of this: TCU got jumped by Baylor and both got jumped by OSU on the final weekend despite everyone winning, because OSU looked better and TCU played a lousy team.
The idea that somehow a team is going to stay ahead of us with a weak schedule because somehow the committee is going to follow the AP balloting is mythical.
Don't worry. If Michigan wins its big games on the road, it is going to jump people.

But you covered it. Thank you.
Polls have no been relevant for awhile now and especially these past 2 years.
The fact that people think the teams ahead of you have to lose is truly mindboggling. Like you have to have paid ZERO attention these past 2 years.

They don't control the rest of their confrence. Houston, frankly, has done exactly what you'd want a team from the Group of 5 to do in order to "earn" a bid. They played and beat a playoff team from last year that was returning a ton of talent. They will play Louisville, which is currently a top 20 team, and might well be by the time they play in November. They beat Florida State to close the season last year. And they'll have a 13th game, quite possibly against a ranked team, like USF, if they're in position to get into the playoff.
And the AAC did produce multiple top 25 teams last year.
I can see an argument if they're getting in over a deserving one loss team from a confrence that wouldn't other wise be represented. But since my guess is that probably at least two leagues will have conference champs with at least one loss (Big XII, PAC 12) that may not matter.
September 7th, 2016 at 5:32 PM ^
Houston has only done what they need so far (as in, after one week) - not "everything" they need to do. Last year is over and only mattered for the purposes of preseason polls. They still need to run their table (UConn got them last year at their peak, so someone can do it again this year). They also need to win all games convincingly - poor showing does not help with a weak SOS. Finally, this all only matters if there is a spot for them - meaning at least two conference champions have poor records and also ND. Theoretically possible, but not likely.
September 7th, 2016 at 5:39 PM ^
What they did was the single most important thing they had to do. People are now talking as if Oklahoma's destined to go 8-4 or 7-5. If they beat OSU, which is still very possible, especially given the location of the game, we're talking about something very different, especially since they're probably stillt he best team in that league.
Also note, the UConn loss came whn Greg Ward was out. I'd agree they'll probably have to winn convincingly, but, if you have two conferences (or ND) with two losses (quite possible, given the OU loss and Stanford's less than dominant look), you only need to get to four to get in. You're not putting them in at two.

Greg Ward could be out this Saturday with a shoulder injury.
"I don't think there's any doubt that I'm going to play, but I don't know," Ward said.

...it makes a lot of sense to want OSU to beat Oklahoma. It would hurt Houston's SOS and help Michigan's. The only negative is the very small extent to which it would help OSU in recruiting.

We have to beat OSU anyway to have any shot at the CFP. At that point, we want that win to count big in the eyes of the committee, and push us ahead of anybody else with our same record, especially if we have a loss. Beating an OSU team that winds up with 2-3 losses on their record will not move the dial.
Your heart may want OSU to lose to OU, but your head needs them to win.

They barely got in. They had to annihilate Wisconsin in an unprecedented manner, and have Baylor and TCU split the vote in a Big 12 with no declared champion to get in. Plus the committee kind of wanted to teach the Big 12 a lesson about not having a true champion.
You can't count on all that happening again.
An 11-1 Michigan would have made them a shoe-in.

I rooted for them to beat MSU last season. Never again, fuck them. At best, I'll watch the game as a neutral 3rd party.

I will never root for OSU to win. I might be able to muster it would be okay if they didn't lose but no!

Louisville is the only real test, other than possibly Navy. Hopefully, the BCS ranking system will penalize them for the shitty strength of schedule.

I fully expect Cincinnati to lose to freaking Purdue this weekend (I'm taking my nephew to that game). Followed up by a 3-score home loss to Houston.
These aren't the 2007-2012 versions of the Bearcats any more.

their explosive offense should give Houston a big test. IMO, Tulsa is the 3rd best team in the conference.

You may as well imagine them having 1 more loss than all the other major power teams because they will lose out against other power 5 schools with the same resume. Four power 5 teams and Houston all go undefeated? Houston's out. Four power 5 teams and Houston all go 12-1/13-1, Houston is still out
That could've been Houston's only shot at a top 10 team. All the other contenders coming out of a Power 5 league will probably have a top 10 win or two

they are non power 5 team who is better than many power 5 teams. Their schedule is probably as tough as they can get for now and was probably set up years ago. If we win out or have 1 loss and they do the same, our schedule should trump them (not a political statement).

I know the joke has been beaten to death but I'm honestly not going to stress over this until after I see how we do against three opponents...and hopefully not stumble against somebody else.

How would JH answer this question? He sure wouldn't whine or wring his hands. You control your own destiny. If you take care of business, and win your own games, that's all you can do. If Michigan won all it's games, and Houston won all it's games, it is my firm belief that Michigan would be rated above Houston. More than that, they would both be in the championship games, and would have a pretty good chance of meeting each other, to settle who is better on the field.

Right and I'd say they need to win a majority of them games convincingly, if not all of them. Powder puff pillows.
