I worked with a coach who used to be on Mack Brown's staff. He said Mack Brown was a great boss, but he was totally a CEO type. He did the hiring, firing, had the last word on recruiting offers, etc., but the X's and O's stuff was left to the assistants.

So yes, I think that's exactly what type of hire this will be.

Kingsbury can coach QBs and is a dynamic OC (see J. Manziel vs. Bama). He is looking for redemption.

Chizik can coach D. He is looking for redemption.

Mac is a good CEO and players will respect him. He is looking for redemption.

UNC has not been good since Mack left (minus the Davis situation). UNC is looking for redemption.

Not a bad move all around.

This "Back to the Future" thing ain't gonna work. This would be like Phil Fulmer stepping back in at Tennessee. Or Jimmy Johnson at Miami.

Here are three names they really should look at:

Dino Babers
Neal (not Mack) Brown. Who would "delightfully" be known as NTM
Seth Littrell

And an exciting bonus pick! Scott Satterfield

You made me do the research. So here it is some quick googling:

If you're going on averages, K-State would be it. Snyder is 79 and Weber is 62. UNC would be close though with a 68 yr old and 67 yr old.

Other old duos:

Michigan State: Dantonio 62 and Izzo 63

Duke: Cutcliffe 64 and Coach K 71

Iowa: Ferentz 63 and McCaffrey 59

For whatever it's worth, my best friend works at one of the Raleigh, NC TV stations as a producer and they haven't been able to confirm this. ESPN told them they knew nothing about it, and were supposed to find out first. Take that for what you will.

Brown should be able to recruit reasonably well (though being the head coach at Texas means you don't have to work that hard to get the top kids in your state), but this makes little sense beyond that unless they hire some great coordinators.

Odd hire if true.  While Mack was a terrific coach, and even at UNC, he's been out of the business for a while now.  There has to be better options out there.  Hell, why not try to go after Day from OSU?

I don't know that you can call TV analyst really "out of the business", They have access to lots of coaches and programs, and get a pretty good view of the latest on what's going on. Late 60s may be old for a high-energy, in your face, screaming coach kind of act, but as a steady hand, it can work well, and if you hire a guy like that and it works out, he's far less likely to leave for somewhere else. I think it's probably a really good hire.

I understand Day was either going to USC if they canned Helton or standing tight until Meyer decided what he was/is/will be doing. Agree or not, his HC mentors Kelly and Meyer will tell Day to shoot for a marquee program that has won NC titles before and do not impale yourself on a rebuilding program.

Mack Brown is 67 years old. He will be 68 when the Tar Heels kick off the 2019 football season.

Stay physically and mentally fit, gentlemen. Always be ready for anything.

You never know when they will call you on that fucking Batphone.

Not terribly surprising seeing as how he's from NC, and the pressure to win there is nowhere even close to what it was at Texas. He just needs to field decent teams that can win 7-8 games a year.

The spotlight to win at UNC will always be on the hardwood, not the gridiron. At his age, it is a little surprising, but he's still got a few years left in him. A lot of coaches go well into their 70s before they hang up the headset.

Is UNC's AD the AD that hired Bill Snyder back at Kansas St? lol. Every year we get an odd coaching hire. Last year, Herm Edwards, this year Mack Brown.

Luckily for Brown, the ACC kinda sucks and UNC is in the really shitty division. Shouldn't be hard to get 7-8 wins each year.
