Hoke has 64% approval rating among U-M fans

Public Policy Polling, a Democratic pollster that often publishes amusing surveys in addition to their political work, asked some questions related to Michigan athletics during their surveys related to Tuesday's GOP primary.

Among the MGoRelated content:

  • Among Michigan fans, 64 percent approve of the job Brady Hoke is doing. Six percent disapprove, while 29 percent are unsure.
  • Among Michigan fans, 26 percent have a positive opinion of Rich Rodriguez, versus 32 percent who have an unfavorable opinion. Forty-two percent are unsure.
  • Among Michigan fans, 39 percent approve of the way John Beilein is doing his job; eight percent disapprove, while 53 percent are unsure.
  • Sparty fans approve of D'Antonio along similar lines as Hoke, 68-4-28. They approve of Izzo even more strongly, 78-3-19.
  • Within the state as a whole, 37 percent of Michiganders consider themselves Michigan fans, versus 31 percent who root for Sparty. Thirty-two percent consider themselves a fan of neither.
  • Voters for Obama in 2008 are slightly more inclined to favor Michigan. Of Obama voters, 40 percent favor Michigan, 27 percent favor Sparty. Of McCain voters, Michigan still leads, at 35 percent, followed by Sparty at 34 percent. (Corrects 53 to 35 for McCain)

There are other sports questions in the data. The poll was conducted Feb. 10-12 by automated telephone interview, and has a margin of error of +/- 4.1 percent. Crosstabs here.

will go a long way toward turning that 64% to 85% or more.  Beating Ohio in C-Bus in the same season and beating Bama would probably take to 90%.

No one contacted me and asked me anything.  I approve 1000% of the job he's doing.  Beating Sparty is simply a matter of time.

If they were talking to real fans, 29% would not be undecided about Hoke (unless the previous three years had made them wary about feeling good about the program at all). Also, these "fans" need to educate themselves about Beilein, because he is leading The Revolution. All Hail! Go Blue!

- 74% of Yankee fans like Babe Ruth, with 9% thinking he was still a Sawx apologist and17% undecided about his overall level of positive contribution to the franchise.

- 48% of USA Hockey fans believe that the 1980 Olympic squad did a good job, with 32% responding "barely adequate", 11% at undecided, and 9% at "the margin of victory over the Ruskies was narrow enough as to be borderline traitorous".

- 76% of the Earth's inhabitants are satisfied with the job the sun is doing.  14% have heard that some other suns in the Universe are doing a much better job of recruiting the top planets, and 10% of those responding were reserving judgement; they want to see how things go for the next 500 million years before jumping to a conclusion.

I see some stat flaws in it. Small sample size, concentrated group of people not representing the school, the state of michigan, or state fans for that matter. While I understand I'm being a little critical, look at the amount of unsure or neutral people. People tend to respond either positively or neutral when they have no idea what they are being asked which leads me to believe that many of those surveyed don't follow football. On the other hand, if you were to poll 100 Mgoblog users who follow the team at least somewhat then they are more likely to understand the question and represent the Michigan fanbase. With that said, it's hard to define what the michigan fan base is. As someone who was in 3 different programs at the school, I know that some people (most LSA undergrads for example) follow football more closely than graduate or PHD students from any school. Thus if this poll was taken outside of a voting booth at North Campus the results would be different than central. With that in mind, polling someone in a town focused on football would give different results than one where many people don't play football. It would be hard to guage an overall opinion of Michigan fanbase at a GOP primary considering many students and alumni are liberals which would reduce your sample size. Just food for thought. I wish the poster gave more info about the actual study, and it's hard for me to believe that Hoke's approval rating isn't in the 70s especially after our recruiting weekend.

But he's only had one season. For all we know, it'll be 2-10 next season (of course I //hope// --> know we go 14-0 like everyone else). 64% approval, all in all, not too bad for one season.

U of M or state of Michigan fans? I got confused and as any pollster can, spinzies applenty. And as a stated Demo we got to see some politicians viewpoints. I come here to get away from those assholes in D.C.

Since every response needs to be dropped into one of the buckets, "unsure" winds up including anyone that essentially failed to respond. "Who cares? I hate football" is unsure. "Stop calling me at dinner time with a bunch of stupid questions": unsure.

Maybe somebody already said this, so sorry if this deserves the 'redundant' negbomb....   but of key importance in the OP is the stuff at the bottom of the post. A LOT of positive shit has happened for both BH and JB since this poll was taken.

I can understand if there are some for whom the jury is still out on Brady Hoke. Win a B10 title or two or six and we'll talk.  But anyone who disapproves or isn't sure of the job John Beilein is doing is clearly on crack.
