Hockey Fan Etiquette

Submitted by mdblue on
Let me preface my rant by saying that I am 22 years old. Of those 22 years, I have watched hockey for about 16 of them. I have played hockey for 15 of them. I was a student for four and a half years and am in my 5th year of hockey at Yost. Please, newer Yost rowdies, stop being dumb. DO NOT do the wave. It's not a football game. DO NOT "Woop" at opposing players breaking out of their zone during a power play. They are not Zach MacAvoy; they never went to Michigan. "Woop" former Michigan players that transferred. DO NOT chant "Ref you suck" EVERY SINGLE TIME we get a penalty. Chant it when Aaron (or Shegos) screws us over. DO NOT dance to the Blues Brothers theme unless you have been asked to. EVERYONE DANCE from last year, on St. Patrick's Day, was fantastic because we were all hammered. It is a once-a-season kind of thing. That's all I can think of for now. Let's try to be good hockey fans. Go Blue.

this is one of these im-a-true-fan-you-are-not mindsets taken to the unnecessary extreme. i'd understand if you were mad at a chant made in bad taste or something... but "do not do the wave, do not dance unless you have been ASKED to"? "hockey fan etiquette"? i don't care how long you've been coming to yost. chill out

I don't think a lot of people know why they're "wooping" and so it's just another thing to yell. Which brings me to your 3rd pt. Last night Llewellyn carries the puck past the blue line with TWO Wolverines over by a good 1-2 ft = "Ref you suck" ??? I mean Brian Aaron could have even made that call. Come on people. But the Blue Bros dance...? Go ahead dance and have fun; however, everyone dancing on StPats was spontaneous. You're not going to capture lightning in a bottle twice especially when it's planned. I think the band has realized that which is why they've scaled back from their super fully extended 12 min mega remix of the song. So take their lead and just don't try and get everyone involved in an effort to recreate that UNO game. It will happen by itself.

I think there were some hockey fans at the wrestling meet last night. They had the gall to support their team with chants and insults! Where is Mr. Rogers when we need him? Oh yeah, he died. Perhaps we should institute a policy of Key Plays and Down in Front for all sports. I mean, we should treat sporting events like the opera or golf. I know the players just hate it when the crowd gets loud. Geez.

This is the sort of mentality that got us the rep as the "quietest 106,000 fans in college football". You can see where that has gotten us. Rowdy is fine. Stupid and/or ignorant is not. I agree on the wave thing and I think the FU stuff goes overboard, but taunting the other team at the RIGHT times is a fan's right and obligation, especially at the college level. We don't need Yost to become an "easy" place to come for the opposition. The Big House has never been considered one of the most difficult places to play, that is our fault, not the building's. Don't let Yost go there.

You're right, it was an annoying post. But our fans have gotten more annoying as the season wears on and I've been meaning to write something for some time. As for the dancing - I don't mean "dance when you're asked to." I wasn't very clear. When one person dances, and everyone rallies around said person, the song is quite entertaining. That song used to be the highlight of the band, or sometimes even the game. Now it's just another song - no different than RESPECT. If everyone had danced when Jack Johnson's dad did, it wouldn't have been nearly as fun.
