Hobey Baker Award voting now open
The voting for the Hobey Baker Award (college hockey’s version of the Heisman) opened today. A portion of the criteria for deciding the winner is the fan vote, so I’ll post a link for everyone at the bottom here.
Note: you can vote once daily, so keep coming back to vote.
Michigan has three players nominated, Cam York (currently 4th in voting), Kent Johnson (16th), and Owen Power (8th). Notably missing are Thomas Bordeleau (most points per game on the team) and goalie Strauss Mann. Currently Jack LaFontaine from the University of Minnesota, and former Michigan goalie, is running away with the fan vote. So Michigan has some ground to make up.

OSU fans reading that as the "Honey BooBoo" award and flooding the blog to nominate family members.

Thanks for sharing . Voted for Cam . Cam York is just a hockey name to me. Not sure why .

Best strategy would probably be for everyone to just settle on one guy and have everyone vote for him. Splitting our votes between three different players can’t be very helpful.
Fan vote is only a portion, and a small portion at that, of deciding who gets the award though. So it’s not too big of a deal. Mostly for fun and fan bragging rights.

The Uof M vote totals 10.1% of the vote. Too bad it isn't limited to one candidate per school, one of our guys could have been in 2nd place.

Annual reminder that the fan vote makes up an extremely insignificant portion of the Hobey vote.
Vote if it's fun for you, but it doesn't really matter.

What's the story on LaFontaine? It's just our luck to have a kid transfer out and then be the frontrunner for hockey's Heisman Trophy for his new school...

He came to Michigan too early essentially. He wasn’t ready for college hockey, didn’t do well here and left to play juniors for a couple years. Finished out his juniors career and then went to Minnesota to finish his college eligibility.
Theres really no equivalent of this in any other sports. Closest thing I can think of as an example is Russell Wilson being an okay QB at NC State, leaving to play baseball, then coming back a few years older and balling out at Wisconsin and then the NFL. Even that example uses a different sport though.
He posted a .889 saves percentage and a 3.51 GAA in his final year here. It was evident that it wasn’t a good fit at that time and He was behind Hayden Lavigne and Strauss Mann was coming in. But the year back in juniors did him a lot of good obviously. Michigan just didn’t have a spot for him to return to. He goes to Minnesota instead and the rest is history.
I should note, that he’s only leading the fan vote at this point. Which really doesn’t mean a whole lot, as it’s only a small portion of the award process. Minnesota is a hockey crazy school with a bigger fan base than most schools and only has the one player on the list, so naturally their player will get a lot of votes. Michigan fans care less about hockey than Minnesota, it’s day 1 of voting, and at the time of me posting the link we still had over 10% of the total votes being split between the three Michigan players. Winning the fan vote doesn’t mean that’s who will win or who is even going to be a favorite to win it.

I voted for Cam York, of course.
But Spencer Knight should be in the running here on principle for the USA gold medal. Not to mention he is 8-0-1 with a 1.87 gaa and .945 sv%

The USA gold medal is a non-factor. It’s a collegiate award so only college games are factored in. But yes, based on his college play he should have been nominated

Well obviously, yes. Just a joke. I'm still riding the high from watching that gold medal run.
