Here's what Michigan players think of Shea Patterson starting at QB

Submitted by FauxMo on

Nothing too juicy in here, but some player quotes on Shea being named starter:

"it helps to know who's throwing the ball" is perhaps something less than effusive praise.  only one player comment at the end of the article was really that positive about shea.

does a QB who is willing to tuck and run frustrate receivers who work hard every day to hit routes and get open but then don't get the look?

You're very creative in your reading comprehension.

"does a QB who is willing to tuck and run frustrate receivers who work hard every day to hit routes and get open but then don't get the look?"

There isn't a single quote or statement in the article to support your bizarre and completely unfounded suggestion that UM receivers are getting frustrated with Shea Patterson's "tucking and running."

"only one player comment at the end of the article was really that positive about shea."

1) "It's kind of a guy we haven't seen before," said fifth-year senior linebacker Noah Furbush. "He's really doing some amazing things in practice, and you really hate to see it from a defensive end -- defending him. "But at the same time, you love to see it. It's really good to see."

2) "He brings energy that just hypes everyone up," linebacker Josh Uche said. "He can extend plays. He's a leader. "You'll see. That's all I'm going to say. You'll see about him."

Player comment articles are generally much ado about nothing. Players are actively trained to be vague in their media interviews (prior to the Shea announcement, every player and coach basically said exactly the same thing about the QB race, being careful to mention all four scholarship QBs). They aren't going to say something that will cast a negative light on another player.

The articles that are written around the quotes attempt to produce a story based on this information, because the authors have deadlines to meet and articles to post and on occasion column space to fill. This is all part of the process. What you almost never get it something really definitive.

You can't learn much of anything from player comments unless they make a serious mistake.

You are mistaking Shea's game. Yes he can and will tuck and run if he has to but his style is more to scramble to extend the play giving receivers a 2nd chance on plays if their initial route was covered.

Seems to me as if the hype is just his ability to make plays outside the pocket ...Looks like we are in for a long year since it’s appears the O line is going to be trash again

You’re such a sad sack!

For the first time in forever Michigan has: 1) a clear front-runner at QB 2 weeks prior to a big opening game; and 2) said QB is, by all accounts and observations, a SIGNIFICANT upgrade as compared to what we’ve seen from the QB position of late — and yet you’re STILL taking a negative stance!

You’re one of the ones who has complained about there being no starter named in prior seasons because there’s no separation, and derided the entire QB roster as lacking talent.  Yet here we are, seemingly on the opposite side of the coin but you just can’t stop bitching and twisting the information to suit your sorry ass agenda.  Unreal!

We thought so, but apparently Speight didn't know until the day before. In 2016 there was only a week of advance notice. And, in both cases, Speight was competing with John O'Korn

Everyone basically knew about Rudock. Shea obviously has better competition than either Rudock or Speight (improved 2018 Peters is almost certainly equal to or better than any QB we fielded last year), so the hope is that he is legit good. It is safe to say that the position will be improved; many, including me, are hopeful that it will be a solid plus.

I think the fact that it was announced 2 weeks ahead of time is very telling, and gives us a glimpse into how Coach Harbaugh operates.  Yes, it's a competition, not just lip service.  But, he's going to reward a player who meets his criteria for a starter and who has won the competition, when that happens, by naming him the starter.  If, as we saw, that doesn't happen until right before the first game, then that's when it's "announced."  In this case, it's clear that what the coaching staff has seen from Patterson in spring and camp is something they've not seen from a QB before -- and that, IMO, is a very portent of great things to follow.

We have all heard the spring and summer hype before ... I’m not one to fall for it anymore... Patterson is good outside the pocket and it was a given he was going to be the starter since he transferred ... Will it translate into us winning the B1G nope he will show he’s really not that good

So don't "fall for it" … that's fine.  But to make statements like " … he will show he's really not that good …" is just downright pathetic.  Is he going to be the GOAT?  I don't know, but likely not.  Is he going to be an upgrade from what we've seen since perhaps 2007?  I think it's very likely so.  You're entitled to your opinion, but that doesn't me you're not a miserable cuss and/or Grade A Troll.  Patterson is good outside the pocket, but it seems you've neglected to read (or more likely, just ignored) the he can also make "all the throws," and is especially adept and throwing the deep fade.  But again, keep pushing your agenda.  I think what will be really telling is whether you've got the sack to come in here and say you were wrong, if/when you are.  I doubt you do.

i get it that you are just trying to be clever and stir things up. but are you really that stupid? explain to everyone how you came to the conclusion  "the o line is going to be trash again".

I liked Devin Gardner's comment yesterday about 10,000 reps, that all the receivers practice with all the QBs.  Carry on and Go Blue!

I hope Shea can be a real leader and not have Pep spoon feed him word for word lines to attempt to pump up the offense during games. That was brutal to watch in the amazon series.
