Hello: Taylor Gleason (women's basketball)

Submitted by Raoul on

Yet another Michigan basketball commitment—this one on the women’s side. According to a tweet from Lady Ballers Insider, Taylor Gleason has verbally committed to the Maize and Blue:

2013 Goodrich HS (MI) 5'8" PG Taylor Gleason (All Michigan) has verbally committed to Michigan. More info on lbinsider.com later....

Gleason is the first 2013 commit for Kevin Borseth (or, at least the first one publicly known), and she sounds like a solid addition to the program. She was named a first-team, Class B all-stater for her sophomore season, during which she averaged 11 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals, while leading the Goodrich Martians to the Class B semifinals for the first time.

Here’s a bit of a scouting report from a Flint Journal article:

A very consistent scorer and precision passer, Gleason is shooting 50 percent from the field and 81 percent from the free throw line. She is already drawing the interest of several NCAA Division 1 schools.

"Taylor is a creator and playmaker with her court vision being her best attribute," [Goodrich coach Jason] Gray said. "She is a tremendous passer and seems to see what options are available before anyone else. She makes other players better by getting them the ball when they need it in order to score."

Gleason became more comfortable running the offense this season.

"Taylor has become a true point and that explains why we are averaging more than 70 points a game," Gray said. "She cares about winning, not individual recognition. Over the next two years, her work ethic and determination will help keep us playing at a high level."

Hopefully she can help the WBB team gets some kind of banner up in Crisler. Hasn't been a very successful program much in it's history but as I've seen they're getting better! Hopefully she contributes!

Not sure if anyone else was wondering about this, but Goodrich's nickname seemed a bit odd, so I found an explanation—from History of the Martian Mascot—on the school's website:

the term "Martian" does not refer to space aliens at all, but rather to Mars, the Roman god of war. . . .

Prior to the 1930's, Goodrich students were known as the Goodrich Gladiators. At that time, Goodrich was still a farming community and the school system had the official title of "Goodrich Rural Agricultural Schools". When the "Martian" name was adopted in the 1930's, it had a dual significance because in Roman mythology, Mars was an agricultural deity as well as a warrior.

Fifty years later, the "Rural Agricultural" is gone from our name. Goodrich still has many small farms, and the Martian warriors have to be reckoned with on the playing field and in the classroom.

I think 5-7 or 5-8 is pretty typical for a Division 1 point guard. The shortest players on Michigan's current roster are both 5-7 point guards. Borseth has yet another point guard commit in the 2012 class, Madison Ristovski, and she's 5-10. Now that might be considered on the tall side.

No idea how they consistently produce the talent they do. In addition to kids from Goodrich, they also had MSU commit Joe Boisture for 2 seasons, and 2 seasons of the slightly less talented Metcalf brother, Chase.

They even won 2 state titles in wrestling back to back recently, but there was some...shady dealing there...
