i said they could plug him in right away--- and they did.... he was on track to start this year and by all accounts -dominate as a sophomore. he was good last year - as an in-line tight end...he was blowing people off the line - and he was a 4/5 star. how did 3 star  mckeon do????

did you watch the games and how well asiasi was playing as true freshman?

a committable offer at this point in the cycle, I am sure you are correct that he is vastly underrated.

247 has him at the no. 135 player..........in the state of Florida.

There are a hell of a lot a good HS prospects in Florida (duh!).

But he is vastly underrated.  No one who is really at no. 135 in his state (even Florida) gets an offer from a top program.

Sorry, gonna be that guy and say it... Kid is in the most-scouted, most talent-rich CFB state in the country. He has offers from three in-state programs - UCF, USF and FIU. No Miami, Florida or FSU. Saying "oooh, oooh, he's underrated!" sounds like MSU fan logic. Me personally, just not excited...

That's, at best, faulty logic. That could simply say how little they think of Kalon Gervin (who I assume you're talking about), or that something else is going on with Gervin we simply don't know about here at MGoBlog (yes, such things exist).

Thanks, <3 U 2.

Hey, I have no problem with WD generally speaking, and am not one of those that comes out to take shots at him for no reason. But if he wants to throw jabs at others - especially something like calling others "weak minded" - then he needs to learn to take a little return fire in stride.

perception is reality. until Michigan wins, the recruits are only seeing Ohio State land top classes every year. once Michigan starts wining against Ohio state, the publicity will swing into Michigan's favor. until then, it's "look how great Ohio state is "

Get real.  He is almost certainly grossly underrated.  Sure the services do a lot more scouting in Florida than in most other states.  But they still miss out on thorough evaluations of guys in Florida all the time.

When 247 has him at 135 in the state, yet the Michigan staff sees a lot on him, that very probably means he is very underrated at 135 in the state.

There are two possibilities here.  JH and staff are wrong.  Or the services are wrong.  Which do you think is more likley?

Who do you think spent more time evaluating him?  JH and staff?  Or the services?  Give me a break.  Guys like this routinely get a skim review by the services and then assigned a perfunctory 3 star.  In contrast, he got many, many hours of evaluation and discussion by the staffs at schools that are considering him.

Do you really think that after many, many hours of evaluations, and many meetings to figure out their board for offers in the defensive backfield that the Michigan staff concluded 'yeah, we agree that he really is the 135th best player in Florida, but given the state of our program that is the level of prospect that we have to offer'?

Moreover, he was evaluated by the services as as CB, but recruited to play safety at Michigan (makes sense given his size at this age).  So the services gave him a quick review based on his potential as a CB.  Michigan evaluated him as a future S.

If he is agile and fast enough to play CB in HS, but has the size and frame to project as a safety in college, that can have huge upside--a large, fast, safety that can change direction like a decent CB.

Watch his tape.Watch his tape. Watch his tape!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This kid is flat out solid and way underrated. I am just guessing that anyone commenting on this blog is not a nfl scout and from what I have seen from recruiting services is that they are flat out flaky and lazy. 247 has Spider Sims as the # 39 cb still. People please put more faith in our staff over these idiots and jsut watch the tape and believe what you see over the idiots at these sights. I saw a lot of hate for Schoonmaker also and the kid is a flat out monster running a 4.6 at 6'6" is scary. He is a great athelete who isn't even ranked as TE because he mostly plays QB. Probably the only TE in the country who can do that. He will bump right up into four star status anyway to make everyone happy, just like Faustin will when these guys actually get around to scouting him. Michigan has some really good recruits and I like all of them. Emil Ekiyor is the best guard in the country. Ask Alabama. He kicks Taron Vincents ass on every play in a exercize that heavily favors the defensive line player. I meen he owns him and will in future football games, but is he rated as high as osu's vincent. Guys I think we will get or really come close. Friday, Thompson, Perkins, Jobe, Falallee, Ford, MM, Simon flips and maybe a top rated receiver out of nowwhere. People who say we will not have a top ten class are flat out full of shit. Ace knows what he is talking about as we will grab up at least eight more recruits. Twenty plus recruits and major bumps for are commits right know and we climb right on up and you guys who are hating and singing osu's praises....well they do have a good class but man Michigan's is going to end up being way better than you guys think.

I've watched his highlights a few times. kid looks like a football player. biggest question is how it translates to college. Will he be big and fast enough. right now he is a rail, but at 6'2", hopefully he can put on some weight. no idea about his speed. curious if he did any camps.

Josh Metellus was very similarly ranked (much worse on 247s individual list, actually) and he'll be a three year starter here... and a positive player. I trust the staff on kid's with high upside.

That's the beauty of where Don Brown is at in his career. It seems that he won't be jumping ship, so I have no problem with him going all-in on these tall corners that he develops so well as opposed to a slightly better athlete that might fit more systems.

I look at the stars and have the same initial reaction as some others here.  However, with Harbaugh, Brown, et al., I feel like Michigan's in a position to pick and choose who they like and who they think will grow into a solid contributor.

Put another way, I'll take Harbaugh and Brown's imprimatur over Scout's/247's/Rivals' rating.  Harbaugh and Brown are building a machine, and Faustin is apparently an important future cog in that machine.

Welcome aboard, Mr. Faustin!!

Also says something that the staff (I believe) saw many of these dudes at camps and personally put them thru the paces...they obviously value that contact and hands-on evals so I assume they know and quite like what they're getting (like with st juste). Pretty sure they offered the Connecticut TE at satellite camp so wouldn't be surprised if they did similar with some of other less touted / less scouted prospects. Be interesting to see how this class shakes out

The bottom line is that I trust Harbaugh and his other coaches' ability to evaluate and develop talent.  Plus they know how to build a roster.

But you're right - camp experience (plus their expertise in film evaluation) means a lot more to me than the professional scouting sites' evaluations.  I like the recruits to get recognition from those sites - and overall those sites to a good job evaluating talent.  That stated, if Harbaugh and crew are excited to have a kid on board, I'm excited to have that kid on board.

However, having witnessed many 5 star busts at Michigan(Kalis, Baraka,Green), I'm always leery of a kid's "ranking"...I would hope that UM could get both a highly rated player, and one that meets the eye test of JH and DB....Braylon Edwards was a 3 star from a small catholic league team..Mike Hart was a 3 star from upstate New York, what kind of competition is in upstate New York?....anyway, plenty of reason to arch an eyebrow, but we should avoid a meltdown.

Look, stars certainly matter in a statistical sense but any 3* player can outplay his ranking and any 5* player can underplay his ranking.  Fans can stargaze all they want but the coaches clearly see something they like in the kid since they accepted his offer.

Ultimately, it really doesn't matter if certain fans feel we should only be taking 4 and 5* kids because it's a smaller class.  The coaches don't seem to agree with you (or they simply rely more on their own evaluations than scouting sites).

Anyone expecting us to recruit like OSU is going to be severely disappointed.  Their recruiting is lights out right now and they have a national championship and multiple years of 1st round draft picks to sell. But more importantly, no one is recruiting at their level.  Hell, even they weren't recruiting at their level 2 years ago.

I'd also like to mention that none of the teams that have beaten them in the last few years are recruiting at their level either.

This is ludicrous. We can absolutely recruit like OSU, especially when its a smaller class.  The fact of the matter is we are choosing not to for some reason.  We are taking guys that need to be developed instead of getting plug and play guys that we could and would get.  Sure this staff will develop these guys but why wait?
