Heisman Winner?

Submitted by jokenjin on
So the three Heisman finalists were announced - Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy. I'm surprised it was only three, but that's neither here nor there. I was wondering what the MGoBlog readers thought about the race and who should win. Personally, if I could choose the winner, I'd choose Tim Tebow. I'm a huge "intangibles" kind of guy and Tebow has got tons of it. He doesn't have the gaudy stats like the other two and one can argue that OU/Texas' QB is just as vital to their team as Tebow is to his, but I think he galvanizes a team more than the other two. Plus, we can still lay claim that we beat a Heisman winner (or two time Heisman winner). Plus, I guarantee that OSU would be incredibly angry that they can't say they have the only two time Heisman winner anymore. FWIW, I'd vote Colt McCoy ahead of Sam Bradford.

Tebow will win. The compliment he got from Bobby Bowden two weeks ago and Archie Manning last weekend was all the hype he needed; combined with his play on the field.

The Heisman has been relegated to a beauty pageant. Look back on past winners that didn't go to a glamorous school who would never win it now...Detmer, Ware, probably even Barry Sanders. I mean, if Colt Brennan can't win after breaking like every qb record then who deserves it? I'll change my tune the next time a Michigan player wins, though...

so I'm rooting for Tebow by default. I think the Heisman should go to the best player and I think Tebow is the best player in the nation by leaps and bounds right now. The thing that impressed me most about him is that he has only thrown two picks on the season. Also him winning again would knock that smug bastard Archie Griffin down a peg, which would be very nice.

I dont thin it will be Tebow, namely because he won it last year. I think that some of the voters may not believe that he is on the same level as Archie Griffin and doesn't deserve to join the two time club. I see it the same as the anti-Freshman bias against Adrian Peterson a while back. I strongly am against Tebow winning and I think the award will go to McCoy, he is his entire team on offense, and has more rushing yards than Superman himself, with 1 less game.

Just looking at Ray Mauluga makes me shit my pants, that deserves Heisman hype doesn't it? But back to the discussion, Colt McCoy is going to get overlooked because he didn't play this past weekend and it is a toss up in my opinion between Bradford and Tebow. If you hold a gun to my head I will say Bradford.

Tebow put his team's load on his back, and look what he's done. This has been repeatedly regurgitated, but Tebow gives off something the other two don't. I think he deserves the win.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but since Tebow won last year, he can vote this year, right? or does he have to wait a little while, I'm confused... sorry that I'm an idiot...

Remember Tebow has Harvin, Demps, and loads of other weapons all around him and plays against SEC defenses that I believe are very overrated. Bradford has tons of weapons around him as well with possibly the best OL in college football and has benefitted from his team running up the score on everyone thus the amazing numbers. If you looked at what McCoy has to worked with and has still had an outstanding year! I believe he's his teams leading rusher and passer! Plus without Crabtree's amazing last second TD Texas is still playing and McCoy is getting more hype. I think if you removed the 3 candidates from their teams, which one would take a considerable hit...I think the answer is McCoy.

Why don't we just rename this award as the "Best QB/RB in the Nation" award. There have been all of about 4 or 5 people in the entire history of the award to have NOT been a QB/RB/FB. People get so hung up on QBs that they forget that other positions have talented, once-in-a-generation type players too.

When did it become "the best qb on the best team" award? I tuned out after last year. Larry Fitzgerald couldn't even sniff the Heisman because he was a soph. Colt Brennen breaks almost every ncaa qb record and doesn't get it. Then soph qb Tim Tebow throws for 20 and runs for 20? Big deal. Political Beauty Pageant I tell you. But if voters are swayed by padded Okie stats and Brent Musberger endorsements then fuck it...

Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but if not, I believe Tebow is the only player in college football history to pull off the 20/20 pass/rush TD thing. That was a pretty big deal. (And it was actually like 30/20.) I would say he earned the trophy.

...or more like devil's advocate. 32/23 was a big deal, but it was ONE record. Brennen has the rest of them. However, I'm in no way trying to compare the two head to head realistically. (Lord knows if we were on a playground I would pick Tebow for my team.) I'm merely trying to illustrate my growing disdain for the Heisman. Brennen had 3 receivers who averaged over 90 yds PER GAME last year and that includes the Georgia beatdown. Tebow's best receiver averaged 66 ypg. I know it was a "system" but so is "third and Tebow" IMO. If it's stats, it's stats. Obviously it isn't anymore.

To me it's the guy who's the best football player. The one guy about whom you would say, "I want him. Whatever system I run/ran, I'll make one to fit him. And whatever I ask him to do, he'll be able to do it." The best "ballplayer." That's got to be Tebow. You need to throw the ball? Check. You need short yardage running? Check. You need me to outrun a bunch of people on a QB sweep? Check. Need me to fire up the team? Check. Ball security? Check. Bradford is the best quarterback. Tebow is the best football player.

...but still very subjective. I'm just playing devil's advocate here wondering if anyone can justify the award based on anything besides: "he's good". Yours is the most convincing I've heard BTW. If that's what it is, then that's what it is. It just also happens to be the reason I don't like the award anymore.

Harrell and McCoy are the only two players in college football who I think come close to deserving the award. Both are so far above any other player that it's hard to conceive of anyone else winning. Of the three, my vote goes to McCoy. God, 76+% completion with not an insignificant amount of drops. That guys is amazing. Fuck Tebow, and his small-boy-penis-touching/cutting-lifestyle. (sidenote: I think Tebow is an amazing player, I just think McCoy and Harrell are better)

Leaving out the rest of the debate (best QB on best team, etc.), I'd vote for McCoy. I think Tebow is the best player in college football, but he didn't have a great year - he had a tremendous second half of the year. Had he played all year like he did the second half, I'd have given it him in a heartbeat. McCoy was terrific all year. Oh, and yes, Tebow has a vote. At mid-year, he said he'd vote for McCoy, acknowledging he was not having that kind of year. While he has no reason to disclose it, I'd be shocked if Tebow voted for himself this year.

Do you think it's a coincidence that half the QB's in the Big 12 are having nasty stat years? There is NO defense in the league. If every QB can do it, it makes it less dificult. The SEC, on the other hand, has a number of nasty defenses, and Tebow set himself apart in that conference. He deserves it. Anyone who says Colt Brennan deserved the Heisman is more retarded than Charlie Weis' daughter. Went there.

My Brennen point (personally) is not that he was the best player per se, but the fact that he broke every record of another qb who happened to win the Heisman. I'm just illustrating how the image/criteria has evolved. If Detmer can win at BYU (MWC) and Brennen breaks all his records at Hawaii (WAC), why doesn't he "deserve" it?

deserved an invite outright and definitely more than Ringer. Not that he should win but it would be nice to see a RB with his stats and elevation of team rewarded. The Big Ten gets no respect (dead horse), and this seems a very LOUD snub since I don't recall other times when they only invited 3 QBs (unless there is a reasonable explanation?). Tebow is too zealous for my taste and (likely) will win since Florida is the ecole du jour and he has legit stats and character to merit the award. Let's hope Greene goes pro--he is a hyperbeast and they are back on schedule next year.
