The story goes that Les Miles was never offered the head coaching job at Michigan because he had an affair with Gary Moeller's wife in the 90s. Apparently, after this, Les left the University and Moeller started drinking, leading to his disorderly conduct arrest and subsequent resignation. Lloyd and Bo knew what had happened, and Lloyd made sure that Bill Martin didn't offer Les the job after he retired.

Personally, I think this is a load of crap, but that's the story.

Harbaugh is going to need to a lot more than a few comments to win over fans.  We have a great coach who is finally getting his team.  It will take a lot to go wrong to go to Harbaugh after what we have been through.

Perhaps Harbaugh wants to make peace with his alma mater. Perhaps he heard people say he was putting down Bo with the comments he made. (I have a hunch he was horrified by that.) Who knows? As he was one of my very favorite players of all time, I wish him great success as a coach. But we have a coach. A damned good one. Can we just drop this line of thinking?

He's still rough around the edges (IMO, anyway).  This might be viewed as part of his "maturation" process.  Just trying to mend fences, maybe ... even if he doesn't pursue anything at Michigan, that will serve him well.

Everybody wants a piece of this action.

I have no idea whether that's what he's doing, but I don't think he'll be coaching here any time soon regardless.

I guess I've missed most of the Harbaugh thread saturation quotient on this blog. Didn't realize I was picking at scabs here, guys.

Apologies. Just thought Harbaugh's comments were noteworthy.

This is a forum to discuss Michigan football, and those tangential topics related to Michigan football.

I see no problem with you posting a comment (1) about Michigan, (2) by a former standout M player, (3) who has reputedly always wanted to coach at Michigan.

Now, I do think that no matter how many seeds he plants, Harbaugh will not be our coach because RR will show over the course of this season and next that he is here to stay.  But,it is still a good thing when a former star mends fences with Michigan.

If he's planting tomato seeds that would be telling.

Personally I'm fine with him mending fences and nosing around for a job here.  It's comforting to know we have options.  I remember the dark days after we bungled the Les Miles contract and were flailing around until RR contacted us.   I want RR to succeed and stay but I like having a solid Plan B.

(The first year we win a BCS Bowl I'm mailing a flower arrangement to the WVU AD with a little "Thanks for pissing RR off" card.  I'm classy like that.)

When he took the job of coaching the football team of John Pollack's alma mater, he straightforwardly said it was his dream job, and that Palo Alto was the place he had fondest memories of. Why would he soil himself by coming back here? It's clear it would be a step down for him.

Harbaugh is an arrogant jerk.  Stanford can keep him.

RR is much more genuine.   It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see there is a DIRECT CORRELATION between the quality person the head coach is and the quality of the kids he brings in.  This group of M players is perhaps the most likeable in the history of the program.  Coincidence?

No.

Bo was an arrogant jerk?  B/c he brought in Harbaugh, the arrogant jerk.  Or maybe RR is academically challenged? B/c he brings in kids that don't qualify?

I happened to think a lot of the teams in the 90s were likable as well.  I think I'd put that on the players, not on the coach.

my logic was perhaps a bit flawed. But Bo didn't just have JH, he had a bunch a great kids.  The typical quality of the kids under Bo, Mo, and LC are a CREDIT to those coaches as being good people.

But look at Jimmy Johnson at Miami, or Switzer at Oklahoma. Many times there IS a correlation between cheating scumbags and the quality of people they bring into their program.

I'm just trying to say something nice about RR.

Many people desire the Michigan head coaching job.  And a lot of people want to become Pope.  But since the turn of the last century, there have been eleven head coaches at Michigan, and ten Popes.  So, I guess what I'm saying is that some jobs you don't simply get by expressing interest.

I'm sorry, but where was Harbaugh when we were out looking for a coach a few years back? He could have sucked-up a bit and made nice and been in consideration. But that didn't happen. Now that he sees Michigan on its way back, he figures he would just drop a little hint that he would be interested. That ship has sailed.

Harbaugh wasn't even on the radar when Michigan was looking for a coach.  He had been at Stanford 1 year.  He wasn't about to pull a Kiffin and come to Michigan, and no offense to him, but at that time I don't think he had the resume to get the job anyway.  Had Carr waited a couple years to retire, then maybe you'd have a point.
