Harbaugh, Grant Newsome & Salim Makki will meet Pope Francis

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

The two players were chosen by Harbaugh to shake the Pope's hand.

Harbaugh had the team write essays on why they should get to shake the Pope's hand.

The essays are included, and they're really impressive. Especially from Salim Makki, the Wayne State transfer from Dearborn.

There are practices planned at the home of soccer club AS Roma, but there is plenty of sightseeing, too, along with a meeting with refugees, including some who have fled Syria. And then there is the trip to the Vatican. While the entire team can look forward to a visit to St. Peter's Square, Harbaugh, his wife, Sarah, and two players are going to get a closer look at the pope.

In his essay, Makki, a defensive tackle who described himself as a devout Muslim, wrote that he grew up learning the importance of religions coexisting.

"His Holiness Pope Francis is sincerely one of my heroes," Makki wrote. "In a time where Muslims have been scrutinized and wrongly identified with violence, Pope Francis has defended Islam and stated that not all Muslims are violent."

In addition to that, the Pope will be presented with a customized Michigan helmet.

Notice the Cross on the side, the US & Italy flags on the back, the "266" decal (266th Pope) and the Francisco signature panel below the ear hole.

are just beyond words and should be on everyone's bucket list.

The whole country and people are magical. Venice, Florence, Amalfi Coast are as good as anything you will see anywhere in the world.

If you go to Naples, the best parts are just south of  it (Pompeii, Sorrento, and the whole Amalfi Coast). I have been very fortunate to travel all over the world and this area is as beautiful as any place. Please visit! You wont be disappointed . (note: I am not Italian nor work for the Italian Board of Tourism).

We went to Rome for 10 days about 3 years ago. We also took high speed rail (180-200 mph) from Rome to Florence and Rome to Naples. A nice experience though Naples was pretty grungy while Florence was amazing. From my memory the high speed rail trip from Rome to Naples (142 miles) was about as long as the subsequent normal train from Naples to Pompeii (16 miles) but Pompeii was a pretty cool experience. Highly recommend Italy to anyone with an inkling of going.

Psssst, Pope . . . I'll pay you 20 Euros to conduct a mass wearing that Michigan helmet instead of the fancy schmancy Papal hat.

You know you want to.

I would love to see Harbaugh hang a pictute of him and the Pope holding a Michigan helmet. Then later someone sits down in a chair in his office and notices the picture...

I hope the pope understands the love that the equipment staff is putting in making him that helmet. I love how we are adding elements such as the pope number and cross and the Italian flag. It just reinforces that notion that Michigan Football is for anyone who wants to be a part of it in a similar manner to how the church should be accepting to those who seek it. Going forward, I hope Harbaugh and the equipment staff keep this up. Particularly, with future trips planned to other countries it would be amazing to keep giving these personalized helmets to other world leaders and spreading the love and tradition that we have in our great University and sport.

...maturity and perspective than at least 72% of the world's population (including UM Campus in Ann Arbor) and makes me proud of the possibilities of today's youth when they're taught to (or independently seek to) think of others before themselves, especially different perspectives...rather than harbor the arrogance that they know better than others. Feeling strongly about one's beliefs is an accepted Right here...oppressively suppressing the views of others is totalitarian...even when you think you're smarter than everyone else, which is an Ann Arbor trait...self-awareness is still important...
