Happy Friday, I'm here for the Posbang thread
Happy Friday everyone, I am not sure if you know this or not but we play a football game tomorrow, against the "bullies" from East Lansing...
What else will you be doing this weekend (assuming of course that everyone will be watching that game), any big plans, any good beers you recommend for consumption? I will be drinking Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest, which is my favorite German beer this time of year: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/76/234
Have a great weekend everyone, and GO BLUE!

"Bro, we gotta go get a keg."
Idiots. The cops should have thrown real grenades instead of flash-bangs.

No, because then we'd have some sort of '60's-esque rallying cry for social justice based around MSU a la Kent State. It would annoy everyone here for ages. Plus, the injuries, loss of life things.

I moved to Miami last year, but kept the same username. It's supposed to be a high of 85-87 all weekend!

Yeah, but too bad you're in Miami.

I love to sail as much as the next guy but it is November! I prefer to skiff the jib with a rum and coke and my shirt off catching some rays.

Anyone been to the new World of Beers place on S. University? Might check that out tonight to begin medicating myself for the trip to EL.

but the reports are that it has the alcohol selection of Ashley's with the atmosphere of Blue Lep or one of the other South U bars.

I've been once. The place is very clean, the beer selection is indeed out of control (in a good way), the bartenders seem to know their stuff to give you accurate suggestions, and the female employees (and their outfits) are very easy on the eyes. It is an enjoyable anomaly compared to what you would expect from a South U drinking establishment.

I live in western Connecticut, and last week, Bell's started distributing in upstate New York. Now the Two-Hearted and Porter are only five minutes away.
I'm vacillating between watching the game tomorrow with the nearby alumni group and heading to Professor Thom's in NYC.

I have even more appreciation for all the Midwestern microbrews now that I'm out here. The local stuff just doesn't compare, unless you're doing Yuengling vs. every other cheap lager.
November 1st, 2013 at 9:36 AM ^
I have a soft spot for Bell's since the family business sells handling equipment to the brewery.
I don't care if it's Oberon, Two-Hearted, or Hopslam... tastes like money to me.

That sounds like a dream.
I have never had an Arcadia brew. They probably don't distribute it where I live. Living in Ohio truly does suck... /sadface.

I would say Bells is overrated if you get your beer info from Michigan folks, who like most people, take a certain amount of pride in the reknown of the local beers. It is respected nationally though and it its still my go to the Imperial Stout (Expedition), although I think Founders is better. Great Divide's also makes a wonderful Imperial Stout (Yeti) with a bunch of varieties (Belgian/Oak/Bourbon/Coffee/Chocolate/Oatmeal) that would do well in the Pepsi challenge against Expedition. Expedition ages better than most.
In terms of single IPAs Two Hearted is very hoppy and very bitter and I've moved away from it as a go to in favor of DIPAs. Bells only makes the hyped variety of DIPAs (Oracle/Hopslam) and that is a shame. Speaking of which, Dirt Wolf by Victory is amazing and year round and tastes just like Laguantis Sucks so pick it up if you see it - you can thank me later.

Bell's is delicious as far as I'm concerned. There might be some better microbrews running around but Bell's as "Michigan's export beer" represents the state fantastically well. I like me some Sam Adams and Leinenkugel's as well - in fact, quite a lot - but I'm exceedingly pleased that Michigan has an offering that can easily stand up to those of other states, and that it's getting bigger and more popular by the day.

the Budweiser of microbrews for Michigan folks. There is just a sense of familiarity with that makes it solid, but not spectacular, to Michigan drinkers. Like most friends that I have on the west coast are like "In and Out is OK" but when I eat an In and Out burger I slip into food estasy until the experience ends. They probably would think Halo Burger is way better. The grass is always greener.....

I'd say Founders is the premium export beer from MI.

I watched a game there last year when visiting the city. Great atmosphere! They even had a cow bell.

I just tried Petoskey (northern Michigan) Brewerie's IPA, it was pretty solid...aaaaaand the BOB's Brewery in downtown GR has an incredible coffee stout on tap and next Thursday is the tapping party for the Peanut Butter Stout!...if any of you will be in the GR area next weekend, I highly recommend trying the Peanut Butter Stout (might be called the Peanut Butter Porter this year), it is insanely delicious!
Also, I will be in Ann Arbor this weekend, do any bars have drink specials during the game? Afterwards I am heading to the hockey game, so preferably a place within a half-mile or so from Yost
November 1st, 2013 at 8:42 AM ^
RUB BBQ might be your place. Not sure their drink specials but they are generally pretty reasonable and a great location relative to South Campus.
