Handling of Morris?

Submitted by MeanJoe07 on

I really want to know everyone's thoughts on the handling of Shane Morris.  It seemed like he wanted to stay in the game, but my personal opinion is that Hoke should have taken him out when he was hurt. I think it's the coaches responsibility to manage this.  If he doesnt manage this...then what exactly does he do? Hoke is a nice guy according to many people's accounts, but it's hard not to lose some respect for him after seeing this game.  Does he really care about the players?  This goes beyond football to me when we are talking player safety.

He got leveled by a helmet to helmet kill shot, his ankle wasn't the issue. He was clearly wobbly, and if you take any solace in the fact that he wasn't being tested for a concussion, you have an unreasonable, and completely unwarranted amount of faith in the coaching and training staff.

A lot of times a boxer is flat out beat. He wants to keep punching and doesn't want to call it so he keeps heading out round after round.

At some point there is a reason the corner man has a towel.

This is exactly what this was. This wasn't a close game where a kid showing some toughness wanted to gut it out. This game was way over by the time the helmet to helmet hit happened and Morris was hobbling around for an entire quarter.

There is a reason there is more than one guy on the depth chart.

That's how I feel about. The guy was hurt and ineffective long before the kill shot.

Then, when Braden has to hold him up and it's on the jumbotron and the whole stadium notices it you may want to burn a damn TO. That is if you are doing your job.

leaving a guy in so he can get his hard knocks and learn from mistakes and letting him get killed.  I get when you leave a guy out there similar to baseball where a young pitcher is struggling and you know he won't achieve success, but is out there solely to get in more reps and gain experience.  When you have a guys hobbling around, similar to funchessand morris who may have a serious knee or ankle or injuries, there's no excuse to leave a kid out there.  I work with athletes who say that they are fine and one can tell that they are in pain or are not 100%.  That's the whole point of one: being an adult and looking out for the safety of a young athlete, two: having common sense to see when someone is limping around that it is time to get them out and protect their health because clearly they are injured.  It seemed like Hoke just checked out and mentally hid in a corner while the ship was sinking.

Which fumble?  There was more than one, right?  Actually, I know what you mean, but my point is that things were going badly long before that.  It's one thing to leave in a guy who is hobbling when he is playing well--Devin in last year's OSU game, for instance.  But this was something else entirely.  They should have taken him out for performance before the injury debacles.  The offense was a mess all day.  Devin had destroyed Minnesota in two previous games.  I know Devin has been bad so far this year.  But why leave Shane out there hurt?  Trial by fire for next year?  It's game one of the Big Ten season.  You're willing to concede a game to Minnesota to try to "prepare" for next year?  That makes no sense.  Because Gardner was too injured to play today?  That clearly was not the case.  The situation with this team is just brutal.

i am so surprised that hoke has not been fired yet, this is a joke of a football program. we deserve to be the laughing stock of college football. how can hoke be allowes to finish the season, as if they are insisting on completely killing this program

Should have take Morris out much earlier. His leg injury just made him throw even worse. Coaches should realize that. After late hit, he was wobbly and possibly concussed. No communication from anybody on sidelines to Hoke about Morris? That's pretty bad. No good reason to put him back in the game. Simply call timeout and protect the player. Bellomy losing his helmet was icing on the cake. An epic cluster fail .

Disgusted. Embarrassed. Enraged.

The "handling" of Morris was atrocious. I've watched a lot of football and that was probably the worst handling of a QB I've seen. He was limping badly. Game was through. There was no reason for him to be in there.

He takes a massive kill shot. Has to be helped to his feet and can't stand. Take him out. Take his helmet. Putting him back in was incredibly stupid. Putting him back in and calling a pass play was just sickening.

Hoke should be canned.

It was clear he was not ready. I realize the importance of experience and development. But unless you have already written off the year, the team, the team deserves to have its best efforts contribute to winning. You cannot put the development of one player above the team's right to fight for a win. It was clear Morris was not ready yet. He had his shot in the first half. You could say, given his supporting staff, he was not ready, whatever. Garnder, by virtue of sheer athleticism has a better chance to succeed. And, If I hear that term Man-Ball from these dinosaur a-holes one more time I will puke. Put Gardner in the spread and just STFU! You have the backs, you have the receivers, you have a slightly better llne. Coaches - pull your collective ideological heads out of your asses and smell the coffee.

What a shit-show. What does that kid do? Eat hot dogs on the sideline? That just summed things up perfectly. Bellomy can't find his helmet. Just a joke. We should switch the Victors with the Benny Hill theme dong. Well done Bellomy, glad to see you were ready. This team is soft, lost, and has no leadership.

First thoughts that come to mind. Then the bullshit excuses he gave in the press conference shows his complete lack of awareness. He should be ashamed of himself. Shane had already been limping and was getting worse. How can he honestly say he did not see Shane's conditions on the field? Is he watching the game? Unbelievable.

Brady's answer that he didn't notice Morris hobbling is inexcusable. That's his and the coaching staff's number one responsibility.

He is clueless in every facet of the game, and should be fired for being a bad football coach. He should be fired tonight for being an irresponsible and negligent one.

This is not necassarily a knock against Shane, but I just don't understand the thought process of starting a less mobile QB than Gardner behind this offensive line and thinking that is somehow a better option.  I knew Shane was going to get beat up before  this game even started.

I'm willing to give Hoke the benefit of the doubt that Morris was not showing signs of a concussion, but Morris was clearly injured early in the fourth quarter and clearly ineffective well before that.  If anything he should have been yanked earlier.  And I have to wonder what it was the coaching staff saw that convinced them Morris could do any better than Gardner.

Regardless of what might have happened on the late hit, I have to imagine that Morris' confidence is completely shot and he might not ever be up to the starting QB job.  I'm not sure he should have been on the field.  He certainly had no business being out there after the third quarter.  Concussion or no, our coaching staff might have just wrecked the kid.

Every decision they made about Morris was wrong.  From having him start, when it should've been obvious he wasn't ready and to the amount they let him play.

1) Morris never shouldve started.  I have no idea why they thought he'd be ready.  If their answer was that they would have to dumb down the playbook for him, that is evidence he was not ready to start.  They game they called had little chance to consistently move the ball.

2) Morris should've been taken out of the game on multiple occasions.  It was clear by halftime that we had no offense with him back there.  He was ineffective for 3 quarters.  turnover machine. Then he gets beat the fuck up, has obvious limp and then takes a vicious late hit yet he still doesn't get taken out.

Only defense for Hoke here is the game has sped up on him and he'd handle the situation differently if he could. Hoke probably had a lot on his mind. I don't think he's a bad person, but this was not good.

And ultimately, this excuse is innexcusable. He is the head coach, not some true freshman learning the game.
