Haloscan Roll Call
Today is the 13th birthday of MGoBlog (see the thread below). A lot of people have come and gone since then.
Who is still on here from Haloscan days?
For the uninitiated, Halsoscan was the hosting platform for MGoBlog from 2004 until late June 2008.
Haloscan was the wild west.
There was no Board. There were no "OP's". You could not create content, you could only comment on the threads that Brian posted.
Once Brian posted, it was a free-for-all in that thread.
By the time you got to the 9th or 10th comment, the comments had nothing to do with the thread. A comment could be responding to another comment that was 50 comments earlier in the thread. Topics switched all over the place.
Imagine every thread and comment on the current MGoBlog Board that happens in a given day . . . all residing in one thread.
If Brian only posted once that day, you could get up to a couple thousand comments by the end of the day. So it was a big deal to be the first commenter of the day. Often people would just post "First!" just to acknowledge the auspicious (and rare) occasion. It only happened to me once. It felt like I found money on the sidewalk.
You could "handlejack" . . . steal somebody else's identity and comment as them. This lead to all kinds of fun antics. Immaturity is not a new thing on this blog.
There were no points, pos's, neg's or any kind of self-moderation by other members. I don't recall any formal Mods either.
It was . . . interesting.

The blog was launched after the Big Ten season was finished.

While I was not a commenter (still not much), I was around and read everything back then.
December 4th, 2017 at 12:19 PM ^
the 9th or 10th comment not having anything to do with the original OP, it seems many times nothing has changed......

They were a hoot.
December 4th, 2017 at 1:31 PM ^
actually missed them a lot.
December 4th, 2017 at 1:46 PM ^
here getting all sentimental....

Some of their schtick was quite brilliant. Also really miss Chunks The Hobo.

A poster, and my account was clearly created post Haloscan, but back in those days I was a lurker. Back then, I was also terrified to post anything on the site.
December 4th, 2017 at 12:56 PM ^
Everyone seemed so smart and football savvy, I was terrified to post because everyone would think I am an idiot. Obviously, I reached the point where I didn't care anymore and proudly show everyone I'm an idiot everytime I show up here.

Hell yeah, those were the days!
December 4th, 2017 at 12:32 PM ^
And the threads were massive - they routinely would reach 500+ posts. It was basically a primitive liveblog.

How is Gary Sheffield doing these days?
December 4th, 2017 at 12:35 PM ^
I loved it. Obviously a lot less organized or relevant, but there were some FUN threads...
December 4th, 2017 at 12:36 PM ^
I remeber those days, but back then I was just a lurker.
December 4th, 2017 at 12:36 PM ^
Ah, yes. I had many a discussion about the conceptual ideas behind NMH's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea on Haloscan.
Although, that particular topic didn't usually start until about the 30th comment.

I just remember the Banner Contest. My favorite was the Tacopants one.

THANKS, DON.
December 4th, 2017 at 2:18 PM ^
There have definitely been times that I've wanted to post this banner and sadly realize that I won't be google image searching "Mgoblog naked man" from my work laptop
December 4th, 2017 at 2:45 PM ^
Beats "11 Warriors naked man".

Who could forget the Haloscan Wars that took place during the coaching search that led to Rich Rodriguez being hired? And the guy who kept pushing for Jim Grobe, which seems pretty funny but probably would have gone better than the Rich Rod Era did.
December 4th, 2017 at 1:03 PM ^
I was one that was of the mindset "Hey, what's the worst that can happen with Grobe. Also, Jowls."
December 4th, 2017 at 1:36 PM ^
I wanted Brian Kelly.
I'm also jealous of those of you with the oldest possible join date of 6/30/2008.
I lurked/posted for a year or more but was away up north when the site switched over/restarted.
December 4th, 2017 at 2:49 PM ^
Me too. I was out for a couple of days. Plus I had to dig up an avatar. The old site was just text for users.

On vacation in the U.P. and when I finally got to a hotel with wifi I found things had changed drastically.
December 4th, 2017 at 1:03 PM ^
Lotta people joined the Grobe mafia
I remain pro-K.C. Keeler.
December 4th, 2017 at 2:52 PM ^
I really like him and always wondered how he would have done at Michigan.
I thought the Tressel model - get a consistent winner from a lower level - was the way to go.
December 4th, 2017 at 12:40 PM ^
The Halscan threads went on the most wonderful tangents and the ability to comment with multiple handles led to some amazing gimmicks. The 2007 coaching search was really the peak of the format, too.

Read the "This Month in MGoBlog History" diary for December 2007. It's all in there.

JHS lives!
That was my favourite handle then and now.
So precient.
The banter was good back in the day.. Thats all by the wayside these days.
December 4th, 2017 at 12:43 PM ^
I wasn't a registered user until August 2008, but I was a lurker during the Haloscan days.

Great days! Smaller community. Fewer trolls. Much more hilarity and fun on the game threads.
December 4th, 2017 at 12:57 PM ^
...was on Haloscan under the same username.
I think I first joined the board in '06 or '07, not exactly sure which.
December 4th, 2017 at 12:58 PM ^
but, mostly lurking these days. mostly.
December 4th, 2017 at 12:59 PM ^
And all the WLA before the exodus.
December 4th, 2017 at 1:04 PM ^
I was there as a lurker...never had the stones to jump in the fray until the site migrated to where it is now.
December 4th, 2017 at 2:59 PM ^
I remember thinking that was the most pathetic podunk thing I ever saw.
I just knew we'd get karma'd when we kept piling on some poor 1-AA rural school called "Appalachian State".

I loved those old Haloscan days. I went by Gnarls Woodson. I remember the mayhem surrounding the blog's announcement of Lloyd Carr's retirement like it was yesterday. MgoBlog - described by the NYTimes as "not exactly a rock of journalistic credibility."
December 4th, 2017 at 1:10 PM ^
I remember those days. I was too scared to post anything. I would just read everything posted. It was awesome. I remember looking at the comments before reading what the articles would be about. Very entertaining stuff.
December 4th, 2017 at 1:12 PM ^
haloscan was funny and was the perfect thing to show your friends about crazy new message boards. it provided countless hours for procrastinating.
December 4th, 2017 at 8:31 PM ^
"New message boards". I was around back in the bulletin board system (BBS) days. Shit was all text back then in the mid 1980's. Just me and some nerd friends trying to download the latest and greatest pirated computer games. All hail the Commodore 64!
