Submitted by Prof. Brewsington on

Per CSG president Bobby Dishell, resolution 4-025 (Hail and Unite resolution) has been formally withdrawn.

And there was much rejoicing.

Edit: Here's the info for Hail and Unite...they may not go away so easily

It seems they think that people were upset soley because they don't want something to replace The Victors, yet they fail to realize people also really DO NOT want a cheesy pump up song. Maybe these kids were too young for In The Big House, and don't realize crowds can get excited without having pumped in RAWK

That's what's really unfortunate.  Most of today's U-M students have no memory of what the stadium experience was before the pop music entered the fray, since it started during the RR years.  They may mistakenly believe that Michigan Stadium has always been like a pro sports stadium with heavy doses of piped-in music.

Those tools behind this need to be sat down by Harbaugh. A firm stare for a good minute or two and then a nice hard smack on the back followed by a slow shaking of the head should do the trick.

I really have to laugh at these comments given the history of the songs surrounding Michigan football.  The three that we know and recognize today were either written by students ("The Victors", "Varsity") or a UM professor ("The Yellow and Blue")   All of them were produced at least a century ago.  I'll also add that the two student who created "Varsity" back in 1911 did so because they figured Michigan needed a more contemporary fight song.

See http://www.lsa.umich.edu/UMICH/alumni/Home/LSA%20Magazine/LSA%20Magazin… for an article in LSA's magazine four years ago about the creation of "Varsity" and the history of UM's other fight songs.

So here we are a hundred plus years later and people on this board are having a fit because a UM student wants to add a more contemporary song to the repertoire which hasn't even been written or composed yet.  If you do have a chance to read the article, you'll note that "Varsity" was played for and approved by the student body and the band as UM's fight song until "The Victors" was reintroduced in 1917.  In other words, whatever this student produces is going to either rise or fall based on the reception of the students (and I suspect the alums and the Michigan fan community) and the Michigan Marching Band.

One other thing for those of you who are tradition minded.  As the article above points out, Michigan used to play "Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight" with special Michigan lyrics.  I suggest you might think about directing your energies to retintroducing that song to the MMB for play at Michigah Football games alongside "Temptation" and the "Hawaiian War Chant".

Of course, that leads us to an odd set of questions.  When did "Temptation" and the "Hawaiian War Chant" become part of the Michigan football experience?  Who made that decision?  How did those songs become "popular"?  Why were they needed in the first place when UM had "The Victors"?

I get your point and appreciate the historical perspective you're bringing to this. However, my counterpoint would be that, at some point in time, traditions calcify and there just isn't room to make for new ones. Michigan football has several undeniable classic tunes, and even though a few of those may have been brought in by newer students down the line to freshen things up, so to speak, even those songs have been around for a century.
The attempt to inject new traditions where we don't want them probably goes to the core of why Brandon was so widely loathed.
And then there's also that the plan for the song itself sounds nauseatingly awful.

It's amusing how those separated from the student experience by relatively few years have become so staid and, should I say it, untrendy.   Why dump on this effort before it's even done?  Let them make the song then if you don't like it pile on with the I told you so!   Funny how so many that want new and innovative football but resist something new musically. Huh, I don't get it!?

If they want to write a new song for the MMB to play - as Elbel and the others did - I'm fine with that.  But that's not what they're doing.  They want to create another "In the Big House" song to be piped in regularly and thereby further minimize the role of the MMB on gameday.  That's my problem with this.

OP you need to change the title as it is pretty confusing. The initial resolution was only pulled so they could resubmit a rebranded one next week. I had already posted last night that the original resolution was pulled and being rebranded. When I saw this post, I thought that they were finally giving up on the idea...when nothing has changed.

I did my part to stop this abomination by penning them a vitriolic message (not really) by candlelight with my feather pen and bottle of ink. Hopefully it arrives in time via pony express.
