I'd prefer Brad Bates as the new AD's first big hire is going to be hockey-related and Buffalo/UConn don't have hockey. But Warde Manuel is a great option too.

Hackett should be commended for his service and getting the athletic department back on track in such a short period of time.

I'm hoping it's Bates for the same reasons (also the fact he helped propel Miami [NTM] to the upper echelon of college hockey while AD there). Even Bo predicted in Bo's Lasting Lessons that Bates would make a great AD for Michigan.

But Hackett did as swell a job in such a tough position. He truly gets it.

"Hackett's biggest remaining task, should he remain through the football team's bowl game, might be determining coach Jim Harbaugh's deferred compensation, which could amount to a significant performance bonus. Harbaugh's contract was left open-ended, stipulating that within 30 days following the last game of the season, the university will review the status of the program and determine an appropriate deferred-compensation arrangement for him."

Damn, dude REALLY needed convincing to come here, didn't he? /s

Why? I get not wanting friction between the head football coach and AD, I don't think hiring somebody just because the coach endorses them is always a good move, especially if it implies some subordination and spinelessness for the AD. I hope they hire the best candidate who can handle managing and building the facilities, contracts, hiring and firing, and so on, not just somebody Harbaugh likes.

Any insider info?

UConn teams have won six NCAA national championships under Manuel's watch - the most ever by Husky squads in a three-year period. In May of 2015, in recognition of Manuel’s leadership of the Huskies success academically and athletically, he was named a winner of the Under Armour AD of the Year Award by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of America (NACDA).

From his UConn profile. Sounds like a very qualified AD with ties to Michigan.
