Group Think Support

Submitted by jsquigg on

So, I hope something productive comes out of this but if I get negged to oblivion, so be it.  My reasoning is as follows:  We have the coach we all wanted and the team is young.  They are obviously more prone to swings of emotion and discouragement, exponentially more than we the disappointed fans.  I was thinking we mgoblog "members" could come up with a way, whether via social media or otherwise, to bombard the players and coaches with support to try to positively influence the team by taking a bit of pressure off of them.  Our fanbase can be brutal when things aren't tip top (and to be honest even when they are).  This may seem like a pie in the sky line of thought, but I'd rather be a part of something positive at this point than dwell on and emphasize deficits.

Listen, I'm trying to help you out but apparently that's not good enough, I have to do your work for you, too? Like your thread, they've probably all been deleted after a few hours, rightfully so.

then why does a new member call out the established board and its membership for being all talk.  It's not a parade when you're marching all by yourself

Here brother Inman let me try to help explain it.  Let's say you're a pro athlete at dinner and 10 different fans come up, invade your space, and ask for a picture.  Cool you do it, but it starts getting old.  Another 10 fans come up, each thinking they're the first and only annoyance to your dinner, and  you take the picture anyway.   At some point you turn a corner.  Fan #21 comes up for a picture, you say "sorry man can I just eat in peace please?" Fan #21 doesn't realize there've been 20 other fans interrupting your peaceful dinner already.  Fan #21 just sees the vacuum of that moment, believing the world revolves around it.  Fan #21 now think's your an asshole.

Are you though?

Point is, people will start threads here forgetting they do not post in a vacuum.  Instead of a peaceful dinner, many MGoBlog readers are looking to enjoy relevant updates and information without endless snowflakes of little to no substance posted by authors who believe their need for answers to their personal questions about the team/coach or their desire to express their hot take outweighs the resulting nuisance of clutter they create for readers having to wade through substanceless post #21, or in this case more like #201.  That was a long sentence.  Probably grammatically incorrect somewhere.

Sometimes you're fan #1 coming up for a harmless picture (post), sometimes, especially after a tough loss, you're #201 and that pro athlete (i.e., forum regular) is already in a bad mood and has moved beyond pleasantries to open hostility in order to curb the disturbance.  Don't take it personal. I hope that makes some sense?  If not, no worries, we're both on the same side and Go Blue.

Pretty much sums up the board.

Learn to take it for what it is. Don’t open up.

Just post stupid shit to pass the time and get your info.

I got downvoted all my 100 points. Now I have almost 5000, I don't know how. But you just keep going. People are funny. Sometimes you get people to agree, sometimes you don't. Just keep going Inman. It's okay. at least you had the courage to post, many don't. You're a valuable, valid new contributer. Keep posting. Keep positive. Go Blue!

all talk. Post the links. Because we're still waiting.

And what CLord said, too. Please take his advice. He's 100% spot-on.

BTW, I lurked for several months before registering and making my first MGoComment nearly 7 years ago. That 1st comment garnered me more negvotes than upvotes and some fairly negative replies; when I posted a retort to one of the comments, it got me more negs.

Rather than continuing to dig in and defend and be defiant, I accepted the fact that while I was entitled to my own opinion and so on, that I was visiting new territory and as such, would be better off to learn the culture.

It's kinda like going overseas and visiting a foreign country. You'll have a better time of it if you learn something of the culture, even the language, than if you go and be a so-called "ugly American".

I like a pie.  Would you like a pie in the sky?  No I would rather die than have a pie in the sky.  Would you eat a pie with bill Nye in the Sky? No I would rather choke myself with a tie than have that pie.  Good bye!

Can we get beyond the narrative that Michigan has such a miserable fan base that needs to atone for something?

On Saturday, 100,000+ people will show up for a basically meaningless game against the least appealing team in the Big Ten.

Michigan fans are knowledgeable and invested in the program.  They care and are involved.

Enough that we have to fight against being put on prime time too much.

Of course there are dicks . . . even Alabama has "Fire Saban" fans.

Did you see Ohio State's TWIS after the OU loss?  You would think they thought Butch Jones was their coach.

Michigan fans are no worse than any other fan base, and far superior than most.

UCLA would kill for the Michigan fan base.  Florida State would kill for the Michgan fanbase.  Those are what bad fan bases look like.  They're bitchy and apathetic bandwagoners.

You could do a lot worse than the Michigan fan base.  They do support the team.

Win or lose, great season or poor season or somewhere in between. I think the team is doing about what most of expected before the season began. I thought the offense would be a bit better and the defense would not be as good. Though our D came back down to earth a bit after facing a good offense. I think we are headed for an 8-4 season, may be we'll upset WI and play OSU close.
