Gregg Henson: Sources- Dave Brandon next domino to fall

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Saw this in the thread below this one.

http://gregghenson.com/new-information-on-the-new-michigan-coach-and-ad/

This was just posted 20 minutes ago. He details his sources (without naming them), talks about the Regents not being DB's corner anymore and that they will not pursue a new HC without a new AD.

My three separate sources tell me that the next domino to fall is Brandon.  He must go before any potential football coach can be approached as he totally botched the Hoke hire, never offering the gig to Miles or either Harbaugh.  As a matter of fact, he never even returned calls to Les Miles when he was interested.  In his mind Hoke was the only option from day one.

The two names surfacing in the AD hunt are Ward Manuel the AD at Uconn and Brad Bates, the current AD at Boston College.

I will have a serious sad for Hoke (let alone GMatt) whereas it will be a rare, rare victory for the good guys when Brandon exits. And I do believe that whatever political capital Brandon has will hard to muster in the face of the need to replace Hoke.

Let's also not forget that Brandon was doing what a great many people THOUGHT that they wanted him to do. There are a lot of lessons here. . . some of them going right to the heart of the battle over sports and education in the US.

It happend in Nebraska with coach Bill Calahan and AD Steve Pederson. Nobody ever liked the Callahan hire and thought it was a mistake from th beginning. Then after getting embarrssed in the first 5 games or so in 2007, Pederson was fired and Tom Osborne, yeah that one, was brought in as interim AD. Calahan was fired at the end of the season, Osbourne brought in Bo Pelinni, the coach many people thought should have been the guy from the beginning, and Osborn lost the interim title.

I'd be surprised if Brandon was out before the end of the year, but who knows.

I do think that guys that have actually been ADs at other places should be on the list, not just guys with Michigan connections and shiny resumes.

Brandon has to go before Hoke does, he'll simply botch the next coaching search (if there is one).  Unbelievable, if true, that he didn't even reach out to Harbaugh and Miles, especially if there was interest from them.

Interesting, Gregg Henson stated in the comments section that both Harbaughs want to come to Michigan, they just were never offered. I doubt that is right. I think Jim's wife likes the bay area and wants to stay in California. If it is right then we need Jim ASAP and I hope we get him.

Just asking.

My recollection from all of the snooping we did before the Hoke hire was that Brandon met with Miles, but something happened (the rumor maybe was true, or people high up at Michigan thought the guy was an a** or that Miles had cold feet). I thought they had some restaurant report that Brandon and Miles met.

Also, Harbaugh was reportedly offered the job, but choose the NFL > Michigan. I thought this was also commonly accepted.

Now Mr. Henson is saying that neither happened and Brandon specifically tagged Hoke from the start? That doesn't make sense, especially given Hoke's resume at that point. How did the 2 guys even know each other aside from in passing?

I hope the new AD has no ties to Michigan and is a total outsider. We don't need any more of this arrogant Michigan Man crap.

Meaning that Michigan never offered the job to anybody who didn't accept it. Guys like Miles and the Harbaughs' were "offered" the job, but never recieved an official paper (maybe even verbal) offer.

It's a wink/ wink kind of thing. Just like when Herbstreit reported that Michigan had "offered" the job to Miles. It was never an official offer. Same with Schiano.

Quoting Three and Out:

But Michigan's new athletic director, Dave Brandon, was late to get to Harbaugh, so even Brandon's offer of $5 million a year -- double Rodriguez's salary -- was not enough to keep Harbaugh from taking over the San Francisco 49ers, which didn't even require Harbaugh to move his family. Harbaugh's camp is not convinced Brandon was ever truly serious about hiring him. Either way, Harbaugh was not coming to Ann Arbor.
Brandon then approached Jim's older brother, John Harbaugh, head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, and Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald, who ultimately decided to stay in Evanston after a wealthy NU alum promised to improve Northwestern's outdated facilities.

That's an offer to Jim and an approach to John, according to Bacon. Do we believe the book or the tweet?

I think John has a very good chance of being the next coach at Michigan. He won his superbowl, but now Ray Lewis and Ed Reed are gone the defense isnt what it was and now the team is in the middle of a media nightmare. He may be looking for a change....problem is we are going to have to pay him NFL/SEC money to get him here.

Jim, I just dont see him leaving SF as long as he keeps winning no matter how prickly he is.

I'm not saying that this rumor is true, as I don't know, but I could definitely see how there could be some truth to this. I work in college athletics (Not at Michigan), however some people that I work with used to. According to them, Dave Brandon has a lot of enemies within the athletic department, and not many people in general have a positive attitude about him. Apparently he is very irascible, and every administrator that works in the athletic department does their job out of fear of getting fired rather than because they want to see Michigan do well. DB is a businessman, not a program manager.

Miles was right

I have to comment on this....

It is one thing if you disapprove of Brandon, but it is quite another when stuff is possibly confabulated… Miles was never offered by Brandon, because I heard Miles was using his alma mater as leverage, to secure a better deal from LSU….and Brandon knew this… Miles and family very entrenched in La… And the first time around with Martin, Miles had genuine interest, but only as a fallback if canned if had he lost the title game…. I also heard that Brandon, for either this reason or another, that Miles would be hired “over his dead body”.

Regarding Harbaugh….. he was going to the pros, aside from the fact that his wife didn’t want to uproot the family. The Harbaugh boat was missed by both Bo and Lloyd, when he wanted to be a QB coach here, and they chose to hire Loeffler instead… makes one wonder if Lloyd was insecure…..

So, if you choose to hate on Brandon for the other marketing and gauging stuff, then fine… but I wouldn’t for the reasons Henson states.

And regarding the twinge you currently feel about Brad Bates based on Bo's recommendation.... lets not forget what Bo did to the Tigers, or that he was the AD when they spurned Harbaugh a few times.... Bo has proven to be a great coach, but as an administrator?  Well.....
