Greg Mattison DC Buzz?

Submitted by icefins26 on

Just stumbled on this:

Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison is talking with the University of Michigan about their job, per league source.

It's all over numerous sources via Twitter (Ravens_Football, Ravens Insider) FWIW.

Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison is under consideration for the same position at the University of Michigan, the Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday, citing a league source.

Mattison, who has interviewed with Michigan, coached with new Wolverines coach Brady Hoke under Jack Harbaugh at Western Michigan and Lloyd Carr at Michigan.

The Ravens defense has ranked in the top 10 in the NFL during both of Mattison's seasons as coordinator after Rex Ryan left to take the New York Jets coaching job.

The Sun reported defensive backs coach Chuck Pagano could be a front-runner to replace Mattison.

People are furious with the collapse against the Steelers and ready to run the whole staff out of town on a rail.  Who would want to involve themselves with such an atmosph...oh, right.

Seriously though, that may be part of it.  Also, potential lockout.  Also, the Ravens have a rapidly aging defense that isn't long for this world, and the team as a whole is about to lose a TON of starters to free agency.  May be a good time for a change.

I'd take that - he'd also open up Texas again as people still talk about the days of the wrecking crew and he's got direct ties to that. Although today's recruits weren't even alive for that or were 1 or 2 years old so maybe that wouldn't matter... Either way I'd take it and wouldn't complain it's not Randy Shannon.

Sorry, just can't get fired up for the Borges hire.

I'd love to somehow get Trogvac into the mix as well but don't think he'd leave his DL job with GB to coach that at Michigan. He would be a good DC option though.

yes, I know he's been both a position coach and DC in the nfl.  I also know that he has never coached college ball which means he's never had to recruit and he has absolutely no prior relationships with high school coaches anywhere.  Why would anyone want this when there are plenty of good DC's available who have college experience (e.g., Austin, Corwin Brown, Greg Mattison, Randy Shannon)?

I believe Ed Reed has two years of college eligibility left so let's get moving on a really convincing NCAA appeal so we're ready to go by the time he retires.

You think Mattison can bring any players with him?!?

There have to be a couple we can poach from his current squad.......

Money and other enticements for his family that Michigan just couldn't counter.  Mattison is a family guy, and wasn't looking to become a head coach.  ND made a really, really good offer for a lateral move, and if I'm remembering correctly, offered full rides for his kids.  One of them ended up playing softball at ND, I think, and Greg ended up coaching his son at Florida.

It wasn't acrimonious, though the timing (during bowl preparations) raised eyebrows.  The Mattisons loved Ann Arbor, but for a career assistant coach, sometimes you have to do what's best for the bigger picture of your life.

it will mark the return of GERG!! I can't handle the thought of GERG chants once again ringing in my ear while I down my fifth shot of vodka (one for every 100 yards of offense we give up). Okay, back to positive thoughts WRT the 2011 defense.

To have a defensive scheme anywhere near the Ravens would be AWESOME! I know we still need a Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, & co. But I figure they would have some major pull when it comes to defensive recruits. Who wouldn't wanna play for someone who coached that D.

all of the sources say that he INTERVIEWED for the job... why would he interview if he wouldn't take it? sounds to me like, assuming brady likes him, the job is his.  I think this would be a solid hire for The Team, The Team, The Team!

People were saying the exact same thing about Les Miles when he "interviewed" with Brandon.

"assuming brady likes him"--Mattison and Hoke are known to be close. Mattison recommended Hoke to Moeller when Hoke was hired by Michigan in 1995. Before that, Mattison and Hoke had coached together at WMU under Jack Harbaugh.

I think anyone could make the Ravens D look badass

I thought about that, but im not so sure thats true. True, they still have Ray Lewis (& Suggs & Ngata), but I think they hit their peak talent wise under Ryan. Ever since, they lost a key LB, Ed Reed has pretty much never been healthy, and everyone has gotten older with very little young talent

2012 Recruiting scenario

Coach Mattison: Hello Danny O'Brien/Tommy Schutt/ Chris Wormley/ Matt Godin would you like to become the next Ngata or Terrell Suggs? Because I built them up into NFL superstars.

or

Coach Mattison: Hello James Ross/Deaysean Rippy/Royce Jenkins-Stone/ Laron Taylor would you like to become the next Ray Lewis? Because I can make you one of the most feared linebackers to play the game of football.

or

Coach Mattison: Hello Allen Gant/ Terry Richardson/ Elijah Shumate have you guys ever heard of Ed Reed?

All respond: When will you accept my commitment?

would be that we hire or develop a couple of younger coaches on the staff to be head coaches so that Michigan has viable internal candidate when Hoke retires after 10+ years at the helm.

That said, Mattison would be a fine hire, though I would prefer Austin as he is younger.

That's why the dream scenario would be to bring Corwin Brown in with the intention of grooming him to be a viable HC candidate someday.  Not sure how we could convince him to come as a DB coach, but if Hoke can do it the defensive staff is starting to look pretty goddamn good - especially from a recruiting perspective.

I'll say it now - if Hoke pulls Mattison and Brown, dude will be here for a long time.
